Something like this happened to me. I had a guinea pig who’s mate died. I had just finished uni and was moving out and the place I was going to didn’t allow pets. I could have maybe hidden him, I felt it was unfair for me to keep him alone as they can die of loneliness. I found a lady who had 6 male guinea pigs who lived in massive enclosures. They had their own room and a massive run outside. We did a trial for 2 weeks I checked on him every day and it went really well he started to bond with a new pig. She would send me photos every weekend or so until I didn’t hear from her for 3 weeks in the middle of winter. I messaged her to see how he was doing and again no reply. Finally I called and she cried telling me that she went away and her friend was looking after them. The friend let them free roam on the grass out the front and forgot. The friend went home overnight and only realised in the morning. All of the guinea pigs died of exposure or were never found. It was absolutely devastating .

I love how you acknowledge that situations happen and life changes and you don't shame people when they need to rehome animals. I don't understand how the stigma of needing to rehome an animal counts as a failure to every pet owner who has had to make the difficult decision to rehome. I understand neglect and other situations do exist, but those tend to be the exception and not the norm.

This! The amount I see on dog rehome groups like "getting pregnant is not an excuse" and such. Like then they slate people for rehoming at a price as if if they were free, they'd go to good homes, which majority would not be the case. XD

It's very upsetting to me when I see someone trying to responsibly rehome a dog on facebook and they get told they're "dumping" their dog and "would you do that to a child." The fact that such a mentality is working its way into the reptile community is concerning. Such behavior results in more animals being truly dumped, as in set loose in a park, instead of being responsibly rehomed. I am really glad to see Ed and Emily not getting pulled into that aggressive mentality but instead remaining sympathetic and keeping the reptile's welfare as top priority.

@@screeaveDestination I think it's more on the friend- The original owner took good care of their reptiles from what they said, I doubt they would have just gave them to anyone. After some research, I've found that Sisudatu is a multi-language name that roughly translates to, "the last child [of dragons]." I got the impression that "Datu" was a title the humans affixed to Sisu's name after the dragons saved them the first time. So they were basically calling her Sisu the Last. I don't think the filmmakers took a name from Finland for a Southeast Asian character. I think the name meaning in Finnish is just a happy coincidence.

My beardie, when I rescued him, was in terrible conditions. 4 years old, in a 20 gallon tank. No UVB, no calcium, no hide, tiny water dish that was always empty. He'd never had a salad, and only got crickets when my parents went to visit that "friend" and mentioned how hungry he looked. He'd been tormented by their cats to the point he had PTSD, and vacuumed up 2 dozen crickets each week within a few minutes. (I slowly acclimated him to having a full belly again) It took months, possibly close to a year, to get him up to a healthy weight, and to the point where he realized that his next meal WOULD come. I had to help him across the rainbow bridge early last year. He was 13. Thank you so much for helping out all of these reptiles

This was so sad for me to watch, my bearded dragon passed away last year after over a year of being very underweight and dehydrated. He became very sick after contracting a parasite from the mealworms from a pet shop and it completely killed his appetite and damaged his digestive system. I had his setup and care checked by multiple vets and it was all perfect so I wasn’t doing anything wrong, it was just so unfortunate that this negligence from the pet shop hurt him so badly. He wouldn’t eat at all no matter what food I offered him so I had to squirt a nutrient paste into his mouth every night, and despite this his body never absorbed enough of it to gain weight, just enough to keep him alive. He was very thin for the last year of his life and it was absolutely heartbreaking because I knew I was doing everything I could to help him but his digestive system was just too badly damaged. He eventually passed away due to a prolapse and I miss him every day. I am so glad that Phoenix and Ferrari were able to be helped and brought back to healthy weights and given to good homes, it is nice even though it makes me miss Angus, my beardie, very much

Hey Emily and Ed! I was wondering, do you have any kind of vetting process for future adopters? Like asking for pictures of their setups or the care they will provide? Would be very interesting to hear about that in a future video! Btw I love all your content and especially the zoo updates! 😊
@PonderingStudent

They have said in a previous video that they do vet potential adopters. In the video where they put the first ever animals into adoption island they also showed Emily specifically labelling one snake "defensive, not for beginners." So I do think they screen people quite carefully before they let them adopt. I agree it would be interesting to know more about what they look for, what questions they ask etc, though.

@cogsandglimmers
@cogsandglimmers 3 жыл бұрын
Along with using the powder like the other person suggested, try to also give an antibiotic bath afterwards. It's from a while back, but Emily posted a video about helping a snake with bite marks along its back. If there's scarring, it can help keep that down, and it also helps keep it from getting infected. If your little guy keeps scratching, I may recommend a sweater sort of thing. I've seen people use it instead of cones for cats and dogs recovering from surgery, so it might be applicable to reptiles as well!

Hey there! Thank you for taking those precious beans in and getting them more healthy. They look like they turned out a lot better than their original condition! A small note for beardies: lettuce is not a good staple food- can cause them to go #3 a lot and it doesn’t provide enough nutrients. It’s okay if you’re not giving it to them in large quantities, or too frequently, since it can help hydrate them. Collard greens is a good alternative/staple. :)
