My theory is that hogs need to do their first shed while their skin is still very humid from the egg. Being that the first shed is very thin and delicate, and hogs have quite significant keelation on their scales, they may run into issues with stuck shed if they get to dry

Glad that you guys have been getting some sort of sustenance during all of this craziness. If you feel that you don't have time to cook during the week, crock pot and freezer meals are your best friends. Lots of recipes freeze surprisingly well, and crock pots are amazing. You guys probably have one at home, but I'd like to recommend one for the shop as well as a small oven. Dedicate a small section of the freezer at the shop (or get a small one of those as well) and a section of your freezer at home, and fill both with pre-prepped/cooked meals. Set aside a day every other week and use that to shop and cook/prep everything. That way, you'll have food if you decide to work late or are too tired to cook when you get home. Just toss whatever in the crock pot or oven to heat and chow down when it's ready. A bit healthier than fast food, a much larger menu possible, and it's far cheaper in the long run. :)

I'm actually in the same boat as them with the fast food era, but have been recommended this method (crockpot + similar) so much! @@gavm7075 chicken and wild rice soup is one of our go-to recipes, and it freezes well, too. The best thing might be to figure out what you like to eat and then look for crock pot recipes. @warriormaiden98293 жыл бұрын
@@gavm7075 Two of my favorites is Bean soup and White Chicken Chili. For the first, take a ham hock and toss it in. Add a good portion (a bag and a half is good) of beans, then add water. I like to use Black Turtless, Maya Cobas, or Great Northerns, but just about any bean will do. Then set it aside to cook on high. Seasonings can be whatever. We do garlic, basil, and thyme. Don't worry about salt until you dish up as there's plenty in the ham. White Chicken Chili 3 cans kidney beans (2 dark/1 light or vice versa) 2 cans great northern beans 2 cans pinto beans (substitute mayacoba beans for sweeter flavor) 1-2 cans corn 1-2 cans diced tomatoes (optional) 2-4 chicken breasts 1 McCormick White Chicken Chili seasoning packet Toss beans in large pot/crockpot, juice and all. Add corn and tomates (draining on these is optional. We drain the tomatoes, but not the corn). Add seasoning packet, stir in, and set to a simmer. In separate pot, boil the chicken. Do not drain the water, set it aside. Chop chicken, and add to everything else. Stir the chili once every half hour or so. As liquid evaporates, add in some of the chicken water. The longer it cooks, the more the flavors meld and the better it gets. Min cook time is 3 hours, no less, simply to get a good flavor. Best time is 5 hours cooked, overnight in fridge, and then reheated. 🤤 Serve with whatever you usually have with chili. We like sourdough bread bowls and a solid dusting of finely-shredded colby-jack cheese, no sour cream. However, you do you. *Note: if you are doing this for a freezer meal, use a crockpot liner. Put liner in the pot, toss everything in (including a half cup to a cup extra water) and forego the cooking (aside from the chicken. You'll want to cook the chicken). Cram in the freezer, pot and all, and let freeze. Remove liner from pot and wrap the frozen bundle well (cling wrap works fine). Store in freezer until needed. This way, you can just pull it out of the freezer, unwrap, and toss it in to cook the morning you need it without having problems with transferring containers. (Plus it makes clean up far easier. Always a big bonus. XD) If you'd like a few more, let me know! :)

You might like my beef veggie soup. I never use measurements so I'll try to make them close. 1 - 1.5 lbs ground beef 1 package mixed vegetables (don't get the soup ones, just the regular) 1 large can V8 or comparable stuff 1 large V8 can of water 2 russet or 4 red skinned potatoes if desired 4 chicken bouillon cubes or to taste 6 beef bouillon cubes or to taste (occasionally, if I have them, I'll use the packs from ramen noodles instead.) 1-2 bay leaves to taste. Remember to remove them before eating. (guess how I know that. LOL) Any spices you enjoy, to taste. We like rosemary, thyme, and sometimes oregano. Husbunny likes sage but I'm not a fan so we split the pot) Put it all in a large crockpot and pour the V8 and water over it. Cook on low for 6~ hours. If you're home, check once to make sure that the ground beef isn't a clump. If cooking in a soup pot, same as above only cook on medium for 2-3 hours then turn to low and let simmer as long as desired.

In the wild more likely a normal than a morph. They have a couple regional subspecies with different colors. Emily and Ed have Westerns from the Plains subspecies (most common in the pet trade). The Mexican has a more yellow undertone, and Dusty are a more chocolate tone with their colors. Here in the southeast we get grey and black patterned Easterns, and Southerns that are grey-brown with dark brown spots, and a gorgeous red fade between spots.

In shedding so soon maybe it's a preservation thing? Maybe hognoses shed so soon because it gets rid of that fresh hatched smell so predators don't smell them instantly and therefore the babies are able to move off and hide faster. This is just a guess

The problem there is that if it had noteworthy advantages for how many babies survive, basically every snake would be doing it.

It could also be a food situation. Most snakes shed right before they start feeding so it could do with something along those lines. AAARRRGGHHHHH!!!!!!😩🤬🤬 Just how the blooming HECK is that teen supposed to think he deserves ANYTHING, much less respect and LOVE??? I'm in a different city, so I cant help as well with school etc, but I'll do whatever I can AND my friend is committed to helping too. EVERY CHILD is an opportunity, responsibility, and a privilege for ALL people, even those who say "not my kid not my problem"... we are so connected, that just won't ever be practical again, and I do not believe it was ever right. Sorry. Rant. But, basically, yeah. Adoption does not nor has it EVER lessened the value of an individual. Full stop. 😡

Honestly I think that the wild-type hognoses look better than the various morphs anyway (although I've yet to see any of them in real life, and I've noticed that reptiles look _quite_ different IRL than they do on camera)...

seeing all those plain white hides and water dishes, would a colouring contest outside of the shop next spring/summer be a thing you would do? find some reptile safe paints and have the kids at the zoo run wild. you could put them up for a vote on social media and the winning kid gets a prize. and you'd have some cute individual hides and water dishes.
@KeeperofMolgera3 жыл бұрын
That actually sounds like a cute idea. As long as they got reptile safe paints that would be a great way to get kids involved

Honestly, I still so much prefer the wild type pattern for hognoses, but I get that morphs are more profitable and fun to experiment with. Best of luck for next year and thank you for still sharing what have become possibly my favorite snake species!

Same! She's almost transformed me into wanting to get a beginner snake. But I have 3 cats and have raised rats and don't know if I can handle the feeding. I've gotten over the fear of holding other people's snakes (no herping for me though) but the feeding still makes me sick :(

I have had to deal with too many hello fresh boxes rotting over a month as people won’t come pick them up to the point that have to slam the skip forward button during any of their sponsorship. I can’t even think of how bad it smells!
