There are a lot of snapping turtle videos on KZbin that are basically as friendly as house pets and when I say that I mean like a dog or a cat almost. Snapping turtles can be very friendly especially if raised a certain way from a very young age and also I might add one of the most intelligent turtles as well. Tank is a pretty famous KZbin snapping turtle. You're welcome for me sending you down that rabbit hole 😁

@@mikalmos369 Have you not had cats/dogs/parrots and turtles before? If you've had experience with companion animals _and_ turtles (or even just reptiles) then you'd know that's simply not true. Yeah they can be friendly, for a turtle, but that doesn't mean we should exaggerate and say they're like house pets. A snapping turtle is definitely not a companion animal like a dog, cat, or parrot can be. And there's nothing wrong with that! I really hope Chloe eventually gets a permanent residence at the zoo because I think the attention and visitors will be really good for her mental health. My turtle would get really lonely in my room (he’s a total people watcher) and now loves his new spot by the window in a heavily trafficked part of the house where he can watch people. Plus, Chloe is one of my favorites! Also, to anyone who’s worried about his cage being by a window, don’t worry, we have blinds there and check regularly to make sure his temperature is stable. He really loves watching the birds and stuff outside too, so I can’t bring myself to move him now.

For the floating stump, if you're willing to hack away more of the foam, you could then try filling it back up with concrete.
@lcoq192 жыл бұрын
I wonder if there's reptile-safe concrete. 🤔 Traditional concrete is incredibly caustic because of the curing agents- which is why skin protection is so important when working with concrete since it can cause extremely painful burns to the skin. I believe that if they used traditional concrete, they'd have to soak it in water for several weeks, changing the water frequently, to remove as much of the chemical content as possible until it was properly ph balanced. It also takes a long time to fully cure so I'm not even sure they could start soaking it immediately and they'd likely need to seal it. Somewhat related, I'm glad you said "concrete" (which is the proper term) instead of "cement". Cement is actually an ingredient in concrete- it's what holds everything together, like glue. I always remember the difference because of the end of the Flintstones movie where Mr Slate is all excited about the new mixture and proclaims he will name it after his daughter, "Concretia". 😂😂

⚠️I noticed you have just a regular outlet right next to the pump. Maybe consider switching that to the kind that has the trip switches that say "test" and "reset", because those are meant to be installed anywhere within 6ft of water for safety.⚠️

I doubt they would've passed an inspection without having GFCI plugs near the water exhibits. Cities/counties/insurance companies usually check for that stuff before opening and periodically after that.
@zebraloverbridget2 жыл бұрын
There are many ways to install GFCI plugs that do require the use of the outlets that include the test and reset switches. One of which will have an entire section of the breaker be GFCI which negates the need for individual GFCI outlets. You can also put a non GFCI outlet in series with an GFCI outlet in order to protect both outlets which is the more common solution in houses. They likely opted for GFCI breakers though since they're a business and it gives the most protection since all the outlets get protection.

You can get security systems that have water sensors. Maybe you can set up one of those just for the water sensors (not to protect the building) and put them anywhere there's a pump. You only need to change the battery once in a while because they work off wifi. It would definitely give you peace of mind and you can maybe even wire in an automatic shutoff for the pump if that happens.

As a (freshwater) aquarium keeper, I empathized with a lot of the struggles in this video. xD The struggle of trying to get driftwood to sink until it's waterlogged is one I've been through a few times, haha. I usually just use rocks, similar to what you did, either temporarily on top of the wood or strategically glued in places that don't face the front. I've done a fair bit of wedging things into one another to hold them down too. I'm glad your strategy with the stick worked out, it looks great! :)

When it comes to aquarium: taking water from an established tank does nothing or very, very little to cycle the tank. The tank is cycled by beneficial bacteria, and those can be found mainly in the filter, but also partly on the hard-scape (roots, rocks and so on) in cycled tanks, so the best thing to do is to take some of the filter out from the old turtle tank and put in the new one, and, of course, never rinse the filters in tap water, always use aquarium water. I suspect you knew all this, of course, but Edd's comment about using the old tank water rinse was worth mentioning, I think, because as an fish-person I've had way too many "noobs" tell me that they are distraught because they "deep cleaned" the tank but "saved the old water" so how could they now get a nitrite boost, killing all their fish...? That the tank water is useful is a hard dying myth...
