Really digging your material, especially from Wulfing. As a 40plus dude, I'm bringing the matrix and other material to my small midwest gym. This late Roger Gracie one though, I'm keeping for myself :-) The footage element was really cool as well, and anytime thats incorporated into a video is a huge plus for me. Thanks for your efforts!

I still can't quite grasp the reverse de la riva hook despite your video with Espen earlier. I have a few questions like: 1. What is RDLR's place as a guard in your open guard system? 2. My RDLR hook feels very weak so...details for control/retention? 3. Is RDLR is "bad" guard? As in you cannot hang out in it like you do in spider. Thank you so much, Jon.
@JonThomasBJJ

1. For me I either like it when they quick trap my leg and knee cut in and I can find the hook because their leg is bent, if I can’t find a strong hook I try to escape my leg fast like in this video, or I like to set it up from lasso sometime if I feel I can set the hook strong, but I’m General I don’t like to stay there. I pass through fast and only use it if the hook is strong. 2. Usually if the hook is weak it’s just because it’s the wrong time to go for it, their leg is at bad angle or is straight then I bail. If it’s a correct angle usually finding the hook is easy. 3. It’s not bad but it’s dangerous if used wrong you expose your self to a lot of danger, but if used correct it has great options for taking the back. So it’s good to know but I still always recommend collar sleeve double sleeve and dlr as foundation open guards. I focus on escaping when they knee cut first. Then later in as you are more advanced you can add it in as a nice extra. At least that’s my model. You can develop it first if you like it a lot, in the end you should know all the guards pretty well. So pick what you like and find most interesting for now.

Jon, all of your lesson clips are really helpful to me. I wonder that, it is sad to mention, I'm almost fifty and purple belt, getting older and weaker, How can I build my strategy to fight back to the young and strong guys. Actually, your de la riva guard help me to defeat them haha Thank you.
@JonThomasBJJ
@JonThomasBJJ 3 жыл бұрын
The key is to grip fight well and lock them up in positions that you know very well and can control them. A good double sleeve guard or de la riva guard are in my opinion two of the best ways to slow down a fast moving athletic opponent.

Caio Terra has some good escapes/sweeps from that position also. Eg. would be in that last one, he would trap the foot and then swing his hips underneath the opponent, sweeping him to his back. I am quite interested in some no gi escapes from that position especially against someone who is very strong and has a very good base/balance.

Kick the butt with your knee. You might force your opponent to post his hand on the mat. If so, you'll have a second to eventually transition to take the back.

I am due for a surgery due to torn ligaments in my knee and cannot do anything on the mats at the moment. I couldn't in the meantime find any of Caio's techniques I was referring to online. Sometimes when working DLR if I dont get good knee pressure ( like you show ), my opponent will slip their knee over my left hip ( rather than the standard right hip knee cut as shown above ) ... I struggle with this as it flattens me out and the pass feels a lot stronger. I would LOVE some ideas on how to recover from this and prevent it altogether.

Sorry I'm a year late but I got a request.. when I'm flat bottom half guard, and say I have their left leg trapped.... The pass is when the person on top cross faces and drops their whole body weight on their left side to step their free leg (the right leg) back.... Or "back step from top half" is I think that's what it's called.. thanks hope I explained that right
