Yeah understanding the relationship between the foot on hip threat and then defending exposing the dlr hook threat makes so many things connect together. Also I know I said it in the video but I can’t stress enough the importance of having distance when you play these positions, it creates so much more leverage and force on all of your attacks.

At 5:10 is something I would love for you to address. I have a lot of success catching the plata from collar sleeve, getting the initial bite on the shoulder. However, once I have the bite on the shoulder and begin working my way up, either by gripping the back on the pants or around the hip (whatever I can grab) to keep them from rolling. It is such battle there. Mainly, trying to sit up and establish the position. Keeping them from rolling. On the other hand, I have found now that backsteping after the roll lands me into mount triangle territory which has been nice- since I finish there. Yet, I would love some details on anything I can do to better control them after the bite, also details on working myself up (sitting up) for the finish. Like I said, it is such a battle there and often times I lose a good position. I can even see that battle for you. Thoughts?

@micheldavidovich69402 жыл бұрын
Hey Jon! Awesome video as always. I have a question but it’s not actually concerning the omoplata sequence but your initial seated guard. I’m having trouble with some guys that are really mobile that quickly blitz to the side that my hip is not looking at when I attempt to make a grip on the sleeve and they can close the distance. I’m not very flexible and they get to my side before I can leg pummel. Do you have any videos where you explain a solution to this? I think managing the distance helps a lot, but my problem is when I commit to get the sleeve grip and the guy just blitzes past my guard. Anyways, thanks a lot for your content!

Great stuff 👏 if you do sit him down with the DLR which way would you consolidate the sweep to the pass if you didn't want to bolo?
@JonThomasBJJ2 жыл бұрын
If you knock him down towards the dlr side with collar sleeve I would just try to come up fast into a knee cut if that makes sense.

Great content as always. Thank you! I've been watching your videos since 2018/2019. I can remember that in 1 of your videos before you have some comments(apprehension maybe?) to collar and sleeve -> shin flick -> omo/triangle. Do you still have the same opinion today? Also, any tips if you get stacked and you're just dangling on your opponent's side while doing the omoplata? I feel like it's always a stalemate when I get to that position.
@JonThomasBJJ2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I still don’t find that sequence as useful compared to some of the other options available. I would Underhook their leg drop down to flop and try to throw matrix, ideally I want to be pretty far away when I throw the Omoplata if you are too close it’s much easier for them to lift you off the floor.

being on the smaller side, i'm finding my opp is finding ways to staple my off leg/foot (the one that should be on the bicep)-- how should/can i recover that foot quickly? should that be the priority?
@SmileBro122 жыл бұрын
I use this set up a lot but I prefer the cross grip on the sleeve instead of the same side. I feel I can create that opening by just pulling my elbow back
@JonThomasBJJ2 жыл бұрын
Realistically you need both, it should never be one over the other, usually they both have their place. With the collar grip you control posture much more and it makes forcing the triangle and Omoplata easier because they can’t posture out, but the cross grip can be nice for switching to matrix or deep dlr when they posture, or sometimes it’s easier to access the cross grip first.
@SmileBro122 жыл бұрын
@@JonThomasBJJ oh yeah every one should drill using both grips, it was just what I prefer. I’ve just found lots of success with it. I’m not a triangle guy because I have short legs. I’m usually cross gripped with my right arm, left hand is on the ankle and left leg is Dlr right foot on the hip. Push on the hip to make them step back and that opens the elbow so I can go for the omoplata. But yes I do see it would be harder if they had posture.

What to do if opponent turn his trapped hand to the other side
@blindbeliever79362 жыл бұрын
The defensive side of this guard gives me trouble. Do you think it´s possible to base a game in collar sleeve, at least to start the roll, or it´s better to just go shallow lasso as a more complete tecnique?
@JonThomasBJJ2 жыл бұрын
You will need both, and depending on how they enter you will start with different sections of the grip, I would say work both the lasso and the knee shield a lot on collar sleeve, but I use the knee shield a bit more now and lasso as last defense stage.
@stevencunden79772 жыл бұрын
Hi Jon - one issue that I run into is that my opponent watched your guard pass video lol. So when i tried to set up my collar sleeve and he gets a hold of my leg on his bicep, I pivot to the DLR like you said, but then he does what you did in that guard pass video - he lets me get the DLR, and just drags my leg that was on his bicep across and passes to side control. Any tips on what I should do in that situation?
@shadymilkman4432 жыл бұрын
Control distance with the dlr hook or transfer it to a lasso to control distance. The hand that is Holding the COLLAR need to off balance him with strong pulls or pushes, or if you can't then change that Collar grip to something else. Maybe use it to defend the foot he keeps removing off the bicep.
@JonThomasBJJ2 жыл бұрын
I would need to see exactly but if you have a lot of space it should be hard to drag that across, if they are really close try knee shielding as that can be really useful instead. Can you send me video of you trying this and I can commentate on it, I’m gonna make a video soon with me making corrections of people.
