We did a similar thing to a 1460 IH several years ago. Not wanting to one up you but ours was in February trying to wrap up the last 10 acres. I feel your pain. Like you we were thankful it happened in the field and not running down the road. You picked the right way to go with the whole final drive. Man those things are heavy, Glad you didn't wait for dryer weather as dry weather is not happening. At least not here in NC Indiana. Looks like you had some good help getting her back up. Watching you thread the F/D back on with the skid steer was great. I think you could tie my shoe laces with the skid steer. You appeared to be "white knuckling" the steering wheel on your way home. Be safe out there. Remember what happened to me, working on the combine.

Rain has been terrible here. At least it finally cooled off, that humidity we had last week wouldn't let anything dry out. Today would have been a much nicer day, but it seems like when I put things off, I find something else that is wrong and I'm on hold again, wishing I had started sooner.

The same thing happened to us on our 1480 except on the other side. We weren't as lucky though, it took the ladder off and we were running a 22 foot header. Ended up tweaking both the header and the feeder house. We had to finish the job with the Massey 750.

We jacked the combine untill the 1/2 in wide crack closed, V -notched welded the crack ( overhead and vertical) and fishplated all 4 sides.........Never saw or heard from it again

To me it is a White combine. White was just putting this machine into production as the 9320 in the mid 80s. They were in financial trouble, so they sold their combine line to Massey Ferguson. The 9320 became the MF 8560, which was eventually updated to the MF 8570.

Had a similar issue a number of years back on our 1420 International. We had a full hopper, made a turn at the end.of the row and popped all but two of the bolts holding the final drive on. The two that held were the top to and it bent the top of the flange over at a 45 degree angle. Our combine was an earlier model that used 5/8 bolts for the final drive, they later used 3/4 because other people were having similar failures.

The flange the holds the seals is strong enough to support the hub, so it doesn't move much, until the taper on the inside of the hub walked it out when we moved it. Going to head back to the field today. That puts a knot in my stomach.

Could have been worse. Gotta look at the bright side. If it had to happen at least it happened in the field and not on the road. I know I'm not the only person to break an axle on one of these, but I've seen ones with duals, aftermarket bin extensions, not to mention I run the smallest grain head they made for this machine. It's not like I'm stressing it compared to some of what is out there. I've got to wonder if there were a bad batch of axles. Maybe to too much crystallization in the case hardening? Count your blessings. We had the axle on the 7300 break... right under the cab! What a mess. I've seen a John Deere 6600 axle break in exactly the same place as your Ferguson so, this must be a problem that a lot of combines share.
@ThatOliverGuyChris3 жыл бұрын
It doesn't seem to be brand specific. A nearby farmer was having trouble with the wheel bolts coming loose with his Deere combine. They finally figured out that making sharp turns with duals was stressing the bolts, because the outside dual has to travel farther than the inside when turning. They started making wider turns, or 3 or 4 point turns if needed, and the problem went away.

I'm a little late on watching but to bad they didn't use bolts instead of the studs then you could have done it without taking the brake off glad you got it fixed.

Yes. Flat ground, no holes or anything that would have stressed it. All I can figure is something in the past got the axle cracked, and it's been slowly getting worse until it finally gave up.

Wow, sorry about your misfortune, but like others say, could have been worse. Glad you got it going again. Short war story: Years ago a local guy did custom work with a 5297 Minnie Mo, same combine as a 5555 Oliver. He snapped off the final drive housing making a turn at the end of a corn field next to the county road. The combine sat there for several years. I tried to convince a friend to fix it up, we got permission and went to fire up the 383 Chrysler and the separator. All seemed to work, but it didn’t happen. Gone one day, assume it went to a grave yard. Also makes me think of all these new combines lugging around 400 bushels.
@ThatOliverGuyChris3 жыл бұрын
I wonder how big the axles are in those monsters. 400 bushels, duals and a 12 row cornhead is a lot of weight.

And I thought I was the only one that had this kind of stuff happen to, that being said its been a few years since I had a combine axle issue, last was the old Gleaner L2. It is good to see you are back up and cutting again, do you have many acres left to go? We are down to about 30, but I have a wobble box to replace in the morning. Good luck!

That’s exactly how the axle snapped on my combine. Actually, it wasn’t a combine - it was a front end loader. And it broke inside of the brakes and planetary. So not like this at all. Still - I feel your pain! You just got a sympathy subscription! 👍
