Help me understand how people are mad that they’re “not using the wrenches as intended” but there’s KZbin channels that make a living torture testing ratchets and people will reference those as quality gauges but not this. Yes snap on cost more, but it’s showing the higher quality steel used to produce. Likely similar results with other American brands like wright, Cornwell, and Martin. So take the snap on vs harbor freight out of the equation and you’ll see that there’s a difference between American virgin tool steel and Taiwan

Broke a few wrenches and sockets on stuck bolts trying to use a pipe or extension on them. The moment i go grab one of those old tools and put the pipe on them. Im a professional mechanic. I don't buy only one particular brand of tools. I buy the ones that work for me. Some tools, like line wrenches for example, you need to buy top quality like Snap On. A 2 pound hammer,,, HF will work just as well as a Snap On. Spend your money wisely. If you are just starting out , buy some cheaper stuff and replace them when they wear out or break. I have lots of tools that i purchased 30 years ago that still preform exactly the same as when I bought them. So why replace them ? It's way too easy to get yourself in major debt with these tool trucks. Having a big fancy tool box loaded with only one brand of tool will not make you a better mechanic. Just be smart people.

I usually hit up garage sales and see what I find for tools. I scored big time last year, this lady's husband passed away and she was having a huge garage sale. I found an older US general toolbox (the three tier style on wheels) full of Snap on, craftsman, and S K tools. For what I imagined to be $1000 or more worth of tools since we're talking about wrenches (both metric and eas, complete sets), sockets (same as the wrenches but in 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2 inch drives) , screwdrivers, hammers, crowbars of various lengths up to 36", ratchets, extensions, saw, and an angle grinder. Only thing missing was a welder and a torch, lol. I bought the entire set for $250, which is pretty damn cheap considering everything I got.

There is always a difference between the quality and the reliability of different tool brands. Perception plays a big part also. While a lot of my tools are from HF I also understand the concept of the different brands. I don't do work professionally, just my own and some general maintenance on family vehicles. Maybe in a more professional setting, I would probably lean more on the big names in the market for the reliability of the brands. As a home maintainer, I just can't justify the cost of the big brands. My actual mechanic uses mostly the big brands, and has a few HF I don't care if they get ruined tools in the shop.

Is Snap-on better than Icon? Yes, without a doubt. Is it as much better as it is in price difference? No, absolutely not. Does Snap-on charge exponentially more for being better quality or for being made in America? Neither, it's for having the "Snap-on" brand name and because they can. Lots of Snap-on's stuff is made in the same asian factories as Harbor Freight's stuff. If anything Harbor Freight's lifetime warranty is easier for most consumers as it's just a trip to the store on the same day it breaks. If money is no object to you, then sure go ahead and buy Snap-on. But if it is, then why would you? It's like buying designer clothes. You know the markup is like 2000%, and 1600% of that is just them charging you for the brand name.

Exactly right on the markup. A lot of tech schools have student discount programs. The one I went to you could get anything you wanted 50 percent off. Including boxes. So if they’ll just take 50 percent right off and it’s ok think of how little they probably have in making it.

When I first started as a mechanic the Snap-on 19/21mm flip socket for lug nuts was around $50. I went across the street to Harbor Freight and bought 1/2" drive 19mm and 21mm deep impact sockets. They were $0.99 each. This years makes 21 years that I've had them. I did end up getting the flip socket for work, but I always used those at home. Still going strong. Most of my tools and box are Matco. They had the better deal when it came to financing it. Over 10 years I spent close to $30k on tools. I used to get a plaque from the Matco man each year that showed how much I had spent with him. He gave them out to his top customers. The Snap-on man did give me a pair of socks though!

I have used a lot of “ store brand “ wrenches over the years , and generally they do just fine, BUT, there are particular tasks, especially with open ends, that I do spend the coin on the high dollar stuff. Most open ends cant take a lot of force before they start to spread and slip off or round a bolt/nut. Snap on and some of the older expensive brands will take a lot more before opening. So I do keep a small collection of high dollar stuff for special jobs, but mostly store brands will work for day to day wrenching. It’s the same with screw drivers , Allen wrenches and other tools, sometimes the best tool for the job IS the expensive one, I save them for those jobs and use the hell out of the store brands on the daily.

I am far more likely to lose a tool than to break one. So I buy the cheapest tools that solve my problem. If it breaks, then i consider moving up in quality. Most of you don’t get it First off I broke the wrench. That’s me in the video and the icon wasn’t notched and I’ll gladly do it again and show a 360 of the wrench before I put it in there. But let’s break this all down. 1. Of course you don’t use a wrench that way. That isn’t the point. The point of breaking it 90 degrees was to show the quality of the metal. The icon just snapped and the snap on I had to push and pull to break it. It wasn’t a trick. I honestly just wanted to see if I could do it. And I kept going with bigger sizes. 2. Congrats you made it this far in reading. I’m proud of you. 3. Americans specifically I’m speaking to you. Times are tough as hell and I get it as much as all of you. I see $2 dollars for this icon wrench or $100 for the snap on or whatever the cost. If you have an old lady and she did the shopping you probably go with her now to tell her “hold up put that back we don’t need it” because everything’s crazy now. I get it! But that’s the damn problem! We let the Chinese, Taiwanese, and all these Asian companies produce lesser quality products for a cheaper price. You still may pay Fortune 500 business owner but that’s not at all going into an American line workers pocket. No American Forged that Icon wrench. That was some dude in china or Taiwan or whatever for .50 an hour or even less. Snap on charges because ALMOST all of their product is made here by American hands. And paid a quality rate. Now how can they charge low prices at high quality if they are paying somebody $15-20 hourly not including paying for tooling to build when china can pay somebody 50 cent hourly. I’m not saying buy snap on I’m not saying icon is the worst ever but their has to be an American company that makes a wrench the same quality as icon that’s a few bucks more. So what? Spend the extra 10 bucks and buy the American set over the Chinese and put it back into American hands. I buy snap on because I mean look at me, I’m obviously somebodies trophy husband.

Well, the primary difference is the Snap-on costs $99 for a single wrench and the Icon costs, what? $15? Snap-on's quality is, obviously, better. Anybody who has used the tools never questioned that. Is the increased quality equal to the savings? Probably not. It's the warranty that matters and they have the same warranty. If a tech needed to replace all their tools I'd recommend the Icon's over the Snap-on's simply because they'd do the job without putting the guy in debt for the next twenty years. I prefer the Mac and Matco guys anyway though on the rare occasion I buy of fa tool truck anymore. And for wrenches the starter stuff I recommend to kids building their initial toolbox is usually Gearwrench. You get that nice set of top tier wrenches a couple years in.

That and I'm not really fond of the Icon wrenches. Gearwrench is cheaper and at least equivalent quality to Icon. I got all my tools stolen when I had a job that provided tools. When I got a job that needed tools I had to replace stuff fast. Harbor Freight did save my butt since I was very paranoid about getting in debt with the tool trucks (past experience). But, as others have said, you gotta be picky. Some tools need to be top tier, others not. I'm still replacing my starter stuff with higher quality as needed though.

Well respectfully, this was just a test to show how much more pressure it took to break those wrenches. It clearly applied WAY more pressure to break the snap on one. The test could of been done a little more accurately with how much actual pressure it took to break it, however it 100% broke that wrench with WAY more pressure than the icon. The steel used is a higher grade steel that just feels so much more better in your hands and is just a pleasure to use. Icon is a good brand for people starting off in the trades.. But once you get a job that actually pays you what you're worth (skill set) then you can upgrade to snap on's. They are without a shadow of a dought the way more superior tool no matter how butt hurt anyone gets! These are just facts! Mac is also a awesome tool brand as well! Also if you don't have new snap on tools that you are actually using then how can you knock em and say they're the same? They're 100% NOT the same at all! FACTS 💯 SNAP ON FOR THE WIN! 🏆 🐐

That's a great point on safety. I think that often gets overlooked a lot by the HF maniacs. Tools (like wrenches) need to made with strong steel that is less likely to be compromised, especially with daily use. I am not a professional technician, but still, when I am deep in the engine bay, I don't want to use something can potentially break on me and cause injury if can be avoided. So for those circumstances, I have more trust in Snap-on or Mac.

Snap-on, S&K, Cornwell, Proto, Mastercraft, etc. Most of them I found in Old vehicles at the junkyard. I prefer the Kobalt. Anyone saying they're "using the wrench wrong" has probably never worked in a professional capacity on vehicles. I work in a larger shop with nearly 30 other techs and I've seen ICON n Pittsburgh wrenches n ratches bend and break when a coworker has been trying to loosen a bolt. I've also seen Snap-On stuff bite the dust. That being said, I've lost count of the broken lesser-brand tools that have failed around me, and I can count on one hand the number of Snap-On tools that have failed. Snap-On has a lifetime no-questions-asked warranty on all hand tools because their tools are engineered to NOT fail, while ICON n Pittsburgh are limited in their warranty because they KNOW their tools will fail. Both brands can get a job done, but only Snap-On and the other Tool Truck names (Matco, Mac, n Cornwell) will continue to get many more jobs done, and with a better chance of you buying and crying once.

If you manage to sheer HF wrenches, perhaps you aren’t using the right tools for the job. Only point I agree is that Icon is overpriced, but then again snap-on is insane. Never will buy snap-on.

Here’s what I think… if you can afford snap-on comfortably (especially without the weekly payments) then by all means buy snap on… they definitely have some tools that just work better vs the competitor and will withstand the beating they take on a daily basis… however, I am a strong advocate of buying affordable tools. Buying snap-on as a new tech or even someone who’s just starting to have more work roll in after a couple years in the field probably isn’t a good idea… again, some tools may a good option to help with stuck bolts, grabbing onto filters better, etc… but most are a rip off for the guys just getting started out but most snap-on dealers don’t want the new techs to see it that way. They’ll allow young guys to go into debt (especially with the tool boxes) and then the guy can’t afford to make the payments, snap-on man will have to repo the box and then sell it to someone for a lot cheaper depending on the condition of the box. It’s all a shit show waiting to happen for these new guys and I feel like many of them lack the knowledge to see the problems they’re creating.

If my icon wrench breaks I can run down to harbor freight & replace it 3 times in a day. How long before the snap on man shows up again?

You must be a gas guzzling guru or something, I swear I only break Snap-on stuff on leap years, but if wasting two hours and a tank of fuel daily is your thing, then Harbor Freight is your jam, buddy!

Harbor Freight, home of the "good enough" tool. I have a 10" brick saw that I bought 15 years ago from harbor freight for $250. I use it weekly, and it still works great. a 10" MK saw cost $1400 back then.

I only use my wrenches occasionally, so I purchase less expensive, if I worked with them everyday, I would purchase top quality

Everyone comparing snap on a d icon. Forgetting that they’re competing for second place 😅 meanwhile MAC is quietly chillin in the corner doing its thing 😎 it’s all subjective but in my opinion MAC is second to none in wrenches.
