I feel this was biased in the snap ons favour, I have had a well used Milwaukee apart, you are talking 4 extra screws to undue to grease it, like 10 seconds, plus it had no visible signs of wear on the anvil after a good battering, then we have the brushed motor, better batteries IMO. Snap on probably used loads of grease to make up for bad tolerances, where as Milwaukee has accurate machining and hence can use a less viscosity grease.

All you're buying is the name. I saw a 10 pack of metric wrenches, extra long, going for $400. That's $40/wrench. You can buy a really nice kit for the cost of 1 wrench

The $40 sets are the ones in the bottom drawer deformed, the $40 a wrench are the ones that last a lifetime and if they don't they do have a lifetime warranty that is actually honored. You don't have to buy Snap-on to buy quality, but the price isn't going to be much different if your buying equal quality. Cordless no way I'd pay Snap-on prices but for my wrenches and sockets my wallet has learned to bite the bullet and buy it once instead of thrice.

I own both of these modles, the Snap-on sets at home now and the Milwaukee is what I work professionally with. Snap-on worked great for a year untill it started loosing power, and the batteries never hold charge for very long. The Milwaukee 4 piece kit (1/2 and 3/8 inch impacts, 1/2 drill, work light, batteries and charger cost me the same price as the 1/2 Snap-on and are still going strong after two years with no power loss and the batteries still last a long time. I did send my 3/8" impact in once due to the power switch failing. they replaced it and promptly got the unit back to me. My electrical power tool money for professional use goes to Milwaukee.

Trey G. This has been my exact experience with these tools as well, I used to be a die hard snappy guy and when I saw the 4 piece Milwaukee kit for a steal I figured I would get it for home use... Well, now the Milwaukee is my go to and snap on sits at my home, only getting used occasionally. For reference, I work mostly on earth moving quarry equipment, class 8 dump trucks, tractors, trailers, and front discharge cement mixers.

I am a diesel mechanic and I own both the milwaukee 1/2" and 3/4" HD impact wrench. I have had the 1/2" one for almost 5 years and i use it nearly every day since i got it, it has been through many drops, oil spills, and plenty of other abuse and it still runs the same as when I purchased it. I also have four 4.0 batteries and one 5.0 battery and they have passed the test of time as they are all past there warranty date and I haven't noticed a drop in power or run time since i purchased them. There is one discrepancy in you comparison which is you used a brand new snap-on and a 2 year old milwaukee, wouldn't a improper amount of grease in the milwaukee impact mechanism affect its torque rating? I think so since the more friction the milwaukee has to overcome the less torque it can apply to the anvil. The diff. between it and the snap-on is that 1. it has a brushed motor which means it can cause fire if oil gets on it, not to mention a brushed motor requires maintenance due to wearable parts and a brushless motor has no wearable parts. 2.Snap-on has a lower amp-hour battery than milwaukee which means less work per charge and snap-on hasn't gone past 5.0AH in battery tech and milwaukee has the highest AH battery at 9.0 which is higher than ANY other portable tool brand battery so that says something in itself that milwaukee has better tech than snap-on in regards to battery power. 3. although you usually get what you pay for, this is not the case, first a brushless motor trumps a brushed one any time and second why would snap-on use brushed motor and double the price for it in comparison to the milwaukee?? although snap-on is hands down the leader in hand tools, when it comes to cordless power tools milwaukee beats snap-on in warranty, motor tech and battery tech (worlds only and first 9.0 18 volt battery) and the large variety of cordless tools. Not to mention for the price of one snap-on you get 2 milwaukees which is a far better investment when it comes down to an investment.

Remember he said that snap on is easily serviceable.... hence lack of lubrication would virtually be fault of the tool owner.... However as I stated in my comments, I drilled a small hole in the housing of my Milwaukee and screwed in a grease zert.... I can grease it with a grease gun... once a month....
@williaimhaynes6679
@williaimhaynes6679 4 жыл бұрын
I give credit where credit is due.... All your statements are true and I reach for my Milwaukee for 99% of the jobs I use a 1/2" drive electric impact for.... However when I REALLY HAVE A SUPER TIGHT ASS BOLT..... I grab the Snap On..... Initial Trigger Torque is well over 1600 ft lbs.... That fist blow to the anvil drives harder than a 3/4 drive Milwaukee..... But you have to hit and release hit and release over and over.... once the bolts broken free RPM of the Snap On is 1.75 times faster than the Milwaukee..... The larger anvil and drum and arbor of the Snap on is essentially the difference between trying to break a 500 lb rock in half with a framing hammer verses a 50 lb sledgehammer...... The larger the Anvil is the more DYNAMIC or INITIAL Torque PRESSURE there is.... Hitting anything with a bigger hammer gets more results.... plain and simple.... The problem Snap on has is 2 things.... 1 the recoil .... The larger the hammer the slower the recoil.... Remember the motor is almost 2x as fast as Milwaukee, With 2x the required recoil time and 2x the driving speed of the drum that reduces the tools effectiveness at constant applied Torque..... Clicking the trigger on off on off on off also wears the brushes out 4 times faster so you are absolutely right..... Hands down the Milwaukee is the better tool for 99.99% of the work.... But when it can't make it happen.... grab the Snap On and use it wisely and patiently..... Hit release, hit release..... It'll remove bolts torqued over 1100 ft lbs with ease......
@physix401

What makes me feel mushy about snap-on is the fact that if you torque down a bolt to the max with it, you will then need to buy the Milwaukee to take it back out! The engineers of Snap-on forgot to ensure that nut-busting torque needs to be higher than forward torque.

I own a snapon half inch 18v ni-cad cordless impact. It is 13 years old. One battery pack quit charging 6 months ago! Never been taken apart. Rated at 575 in reverse. This thing has been a beast! Being a competitive hardcore diy guy I have very much enjoyed this gun. If you deal with salvage yards and massive amounts of rust, you need the big hammer. Seeing this video confirms what my hand feels when in the field. My gun has worked over many other guns rated at 32v. When I saw the first set of numbers I was literally thinking that your math was off, but then with the last test really showed off the big hammer. Something else worth saying is I never had any battery problems and it's by far the fastest 30 minute charger I've used. And being honest, I never took proper care of the batteries. I've pulled them off the charger repeatedly and worked both batteries from full charge till full discharge.... countless times. Seeing the service ability I'm deciding to get my gun serviced instead of replacing it. Batteries I'll bet are gonna be expensive.

However, I've borrowed a coworker's Milwaukee when my air tools fail to deliver. I was breaking loose K-frame bolts on 20+ year old cars with the Milwaukee and could hardly hold the tool still !!! I own both of these tools. I've owned the snap on since December of 14. The Milwaukee since March of 15. I bought the snap on because I owned the previous model and I am a sucker for green tools. I bought the Milwaukee because it came in a combo pack with a flash light and 3/8 impact, two batteries and charger for about 580. I was in the market for a 3/8 cordless impact, so I figured that was a good buy. I took the snap on impact home for the purpose of keeping the same batteries in my tool box. I can honestly say after using the Milwaukee, I have been pretty much disappointed with the snap on one. I feel it's not as powerful when it comes to breaking fasteners loose. The snap on has struggled to loosen lug nuts torqued to 160ftlbs and the notoriously tight Honda crank shaft bolt. The Milwaukee has not let me down on getting lug nuts loose on f550s. I am impressed daily(as with others in my shop that own one too) when I use it. I was not aware of the checking the number of charges feature of the snap on, that is handy. I am fortunate enough how ever to work in a shop where power tools are warranties for life through them, so if my Milwaukee anvil were to sheer, they would cover it.

After I got it back, I opened it and the only thing that appeared original was the plastic case. My air impact only comes out a couple times a month. Their tools last longer period. I also own some of the Milwaukee M12 fuel tools that I like very much so this is not at all against them. They all have their place but for a big Cordless impact the Snappy wins hands down.

As a heavy equipment field technician, I have owned both the Snap-on, and the Milwaukee cordless impact. After about 6 years of daily use, the batteries on the Snap-on gave up the ghost, and would not hold a charge. Because the Milwaukee was cheaper than simply buying the Snap-on batteries, I got one. I think personally the Milwaukee hits harder, and and can do more work on a single charge. Also, after running it 6 days a week, outdoors, in dirt, silt, mud, covered in hydraulic oil, and bouncing around the back of my service truck for the last two years, it is rock solid. I haven't had a single problem, and although its looking pretty beat up these days, its still putting in work. I would hands down recommend the Milwaukee over the Snap-on, and after my experience with the 1/2" gun, I got the 3/8 fuel, the sawzall, drill, and the m12 ratchet. All of them get my stamp of approval.

I have 3 of the Snap on impacts, the first one quit working in reverse on me. When I met up with my dealer to send it out for repair I bought another one on the spot, that one actually came with a free set of impact sockets. So that gave me one for my tool box and one for in my truck. Then I bought a Harley that I keep in Florida for when I'm on vacation, so I bought another one to keep in Florida with the tool box I have down there. I also have 3 of the 3/8" Snap on impacts that have served me well. I have sent one out for rebuild so far and use both every day at work. I work for a International truck dealership as a level 4 technician. Some of the other guys have the Milwaukee impacts they have bought from the Mac tool dealer, I think mostly for the price difference. I like having the same battery and chargers for 1/2", 3/8", drill, flashlight and sawzall. I have since purchased the 3/8" and 1/4" ratchets and have been very impressed by the 3/8" I don't use the 1/4" that much and also have a long LED light that uses the same battery for those. Because I have so many I have 3 batteries on chargers for the impacts and 2 for the ratchets, so I always have freshly charged batteries on hand. It's important to note that my impacts use the older style batteries without the charge indicator, I believe the batteries you tested were the Nicad; That's what they are changing over too because they say the batteries last longer. You can see a pic of my tool boxes on my YT page.

RTR As a millwright at a pulp mill, I've used a 1/2" 18V NiCad Snap-on impact for the last 5-1/2 years, four days a week. Just last month it started making a unfriendly noise. Suspect bearing. Never cleaned internals or lubed it, ever. It's been rode hard and put away wet. Its working environment has been a true test to any power tool. Low temperatures in northern Canada, high temperatures working around and near the boiler, however I did wreck a battery because of high heat, I also melted the sole of my work boot. There is a limit you know. It's seen lime dust, ash, hog, grease, water, solvents and of course it's share of bumps, drops and flops. It's the work horse in my tool box.

Steven Seagal True unless the 9.0 battery has a higher C rating. In that case it can supply a higher continuous current draw. Layman’s term: supplies more available juice to the motor. Think of it this way. Take two 1-gallon jugs of water. Poke a 1/4 inch hole in one and a 1/2 inch hole in the other. Both jugs contain the same amount of water but the one with the bigger hole allows more water to flow. In simple terms that’s how C ratings are. Higher C ratings allow more current flow. Hope that sheds a little light on the subject.

Own them both,Milwaukee M18 is my go to tool(s). Had a lot of trouble with my Snap on over the course of a couple years,along with weak,junk batteries. Since upgrading to Milwaukee,I've had zero issues with any of them. From 1/4" impact driver,to 1/2" Impact,grease gun...etc,I now own many of them,and they work flawlessly. The batteries are amazing,last and charge quick. Dropped one in a bucket of used engine oil,they replaced it free of charge with a new one. So,great warranty as well. Seems I was in an argument with my Snap on guy every time my impact broke.....as with all their tools. I'm no longer a snap on customer,but am a happy life long Milwaukee customer.

Awesome review. Though the SO impact may be built with heavier components. I think I would much rather put the extra 400 bucks in my pocket. You could buy one Milwaukee kit with batteries and 2 extra bare tools for the price of one SO impact... The extra effort that SO put into its impact IMO is not worth it being twice the price as the Milwaukee.. The SO impact does not offer a good value IMO.. Then there is the Dewalt dcf899dh and most powerful Makita that all cost a lot less than the SO Brushed impact... Too many options that offer a better value. Is the SO impact longer? If they sold there tools in retail stores I think the prices would be on par with there competitors but maybe 10-20% more expensive vs 100+% more expensive.. Convenience is probably the biggest reason I still buy some tools from the trucks. Looking for receipts and making a run to NAPA/Oreilly/etc to replace something is annoying (even when possible). Worse is taking the time to box something up and mail it back to wherever for repair or replacement. That said, most of my "tool truck" tools were bought at student pricing and now only account for about 60% of what is in my box. If it weren't for that initial pricing, they would probably only account for about 10%. I consider myself lucky that I've not had to fall into the easy credit trap as I went into this field with enough savings from a previous career to avoid that, but I can certainly understand the temptation.

Also, using a deep well socket eliminates the offset issue brought up at the beginning. I've been working with Snap on stuff my whole career and I really like their stuff, I just can't bring myself to pay the prices of some of their stuff. Like he said, $760 bucks for the kit. for a 1 and 2 year warranty. Snap On isn't dedicated to making quality products that they stand behind. They're at the top of the food chain and set their own prices, they want to squeeze out as much money as they can from a product while minimizing it's cost and warrantability. (I E. you have to prove you own the tool and are the original owner, same goes for hand tools by the way).

So, I take it that the Mil is impacting faster to build up its superior torque with smaller impacts so the mechanism doesn't have to be as heavy. Is there an impact rate listed for the two? As a person who does all kinds of work it would seem silly to invest in a Snap battery system over a Mil, Dew, Mak, Hit, Rid, Ry. There is a lot less grease in that MIl, but there are so many variables, what kind of grease, what formulation of metal, shape of anvil..... It might be just right for the application. Did you see any wear? Thanks for taking them apart. Even though we don't know all of the details of what we are viewing, it gives us a great opportunity to learn together and so much more to argue about.

I owned the snap on 6650 and never had a problem. I now have an 8850. The mass of the hammer and anvil gives me what I want. The hard hit when I'm breaking loose a fastener. I'd rather hit the trigger for a ten seconds, rinse and repeat than hold the throttle for a long time on the Milwauke. And the serviceability makes it a hands down winner for me. It may only have a one year warranty but you'll NEED the longer warranty on the Milwaukee. Also, sending the tool in for general maintenance is usual not a warranty issue (do you have to pay to have it cleaned and lubed after a year? After two it looked woefully in need) AND you are without your tool while it's off to the shop, either way.. Seeing the size of the hammer/anvil and what you did to pull the tools apart was an eye opener. I've heard of a lot more issues with the Milwaukee than the Snap On. Snap On may not be the consistent number maker but the reliability and serviceability is obviously the deal maker or breaker. I'll keep my Snap On.

Nutz4Gunz45 when I took my IR air gun in to the service center I asked about greasing it. the guy told me he sees more come in from being over greased than anything else. people pump them so full they can't impact any more.

FishFind3000 Those tiny grease fittings take like one or two pumps from that needle grease gun but I agree, people could over pump it.

I own the Snap on Battery Impact wrench. My son in-law works for them in Kenosha WI and gets a 50- percent discount. that said, It is more powerful than most of my air tool which are pushed by 175 psi. It takes off my Ford Super-duty lugs at 145 ft lbs easily and my air tools struggle. No problems in 2.4 years , but the price was right a gift....

The mechanism will never be the issue. Milwaukee has forgotten more about making electric tools than snap on will ever know. The batteries and the motor are where the reliability counts.

Real Tool Reviews You obviously don't understand much about batteries and electric motors. That's what makes cordless tools great or just fair. More importantly, the cost should have something to do with it. It isn't like we're sending these things to the moon.

I've had the first gen Milwaukee for seven years with the same two 5 amp hour batteries. It works almost as good as they day it was purchased. I use it on heavy construction and forestry equipment and it has been beat to death. I just purchased a new one key 1/2 inch and will soon retire the old one to home use. Can't beat Milwaukee for the price and power. If you're interested in tearing down my old seven year impact for a video let me know

Nice review. I've had mine for over a year and I love it and as an Industrial maintence mechanic,I rely on my Snap-On impact and tools. I've had no problems with and find it EXTREMELY DURABLE as it has fallen up to 6' landing on the battery pack without any damage. You get what you pay for as professional, quality tools made for heavy constant use are not cheap and EXCELLENT customer service ( my Snap-On tool distributor is available 24/7, inc. visits to their home, for full time mechanics) is PRICELESS! My local Home Depot closes at 9:00 pm.. Home Depot and Milwaukee both give you a ration of major inconvenience to exercise the warranty IF you try to use it so you do need to really buy two Milwaukees to one Snap-On.

I have the snap on and it is great and I have had no problems with the tool. I do use this for a living and it does see a lot of use also don't forget if something did break you can easily get parts to fix it your self which if your a auto or truck tech you should be able to do with out any problem.

All y'all dissing Snap-On am I the only one that has a well made impact? Anyway I own both Fuel and Snap-On. Both are great. I'm a field diesel tech and use the Snap-On in the field. The Snap-On is a better built impact. In field work I need something I can take apart quick and service and get back to work if I need to. The CT8850 is just that. It has great power and can handle the heavy abuse I give it. I use the Fuel at home when I do side work. This is a great affordable tool also. It does break nut and bolts also. My friend has a Fuel that he uses at work and was working on a mini x. Taking the bucket off he was hammering strait for 15 seconds and snap the anvil twisted apart. We took the gun apart and found it had nearly to no grease. Metal shavings everywhere. He finished the job with my Snap-On. He then bought him one. The Fuel was 6 months old and sent it back for warranty and he uses his at home now. The CT8850 is like a performance engine with forged internals. I like the Fuel don't get me wrong but I need durability the Snap-on delivers.....

I've had my Milwaukee for close to 3 years now and it's held up to the abuse no issues using it daily in professional use. Couldn't justify the the snap on one considering I can buy the Milwaukee fuel m18 kit with 3/8" and light for less than the price of just the snap on impact. But snap on is always priced about 30-40% more than your average tools.
@NoahKuzel
@NoahKuzel 7 жыл бұрын
It isn't always just about impact strength, BPM, and total torque. Snap On will generally be better because of how the internals are made. Do they have pressed metal, centered metal, or forges gearing? Which one has more glass fiber reinforcement? What kind of polymerase materials is the plastic or plastic overmold is the housing made of. I can go on and on.

Noah Kuzel well I have both and can tell you the Milwaukee wins hands down. I do like the angle of the head at times but that is more useful in the 3/8 drive to me. As much as I paid for the Snap on it should beat the Milwaukee in every category but that's not the case at all

thanks real tool reviews for that awesome comparison. I own the snap on cordless impact model number CT 8850. I asked you to do this review a few months ago and you delivered. I have yet to have a fastener that I am unable to remove with this impact. I am a professional Automotive technician and have been one for 20-plus years and have come to realize that Snap-on is just another tool and there are so many more options now. but I keep coming back to snap on for the tools that really matter this being one of them. thanks again for that awesome review.

Have both in the shop at work. Actually 2 of the Snap Ons before the boss started buying Milwaukee stuff. The Milwaukee just flat out, out powers the Snap On when in comes to real world work. One of our Snap Ons broke the nose cone damn near in half. Needless to say the Milwaukee is the one that goes out on site with us... blistering heat, pouring rain, sub zero temps...

Just recently i bought a 1/2 milwauke fuel.

I'm not a mechanic but I'm a Carpenter. I own every M18 drill and impact set from the M18 brushed to brushless and brushless fuel one key, to the half inch in the video for the occasional auto repair. they all get used used every day some more then others. owning well over 10k in Milwaukee tools and batteries nothing has failed me yet. my first set of brushed tools are still going strong. but you can't beat the fuel series of tools

I have the snap on as shown in your tested. Just had to send it in today through my dealer which stated it would be about $135. I have owned for around two years. Usually used daily doing vw salvage and repair work. Over the last month it would tighten decent but low reverse torque and noisy in the head. We will how it is when it returns
