The Snapchat Dismoprhyia thing I sorta feel. I hate how my camera doesn't show how I actually look. (I'm black) it makes my skin look gray, makes my features morphed and different. And it does not look like how I feel I look irl, I use a filter to look like idk not gray, and to put back my more orangy undertone. But I try my hardest to make aure it doesn't change my face too much. I love myself but I feel like some cameras really fuck up my face. Maybe that's all in my head, but it does give me doubts abt myself. Until I look in a mirror ofc.

It can be a moral failure if you end up hurting others with your addiction. A lot of addicts end up stealing money for drugs, take out the pain of withdrawal on loved ones, be neglectful parents... Etc. It doesn't mean it's not sad and difficult and a mental issue. But they're still responsible.

Even in that situation, the addiction is still a medical issue. It's like if somebody having a mental health crisis hurt somebody, while hurting somebody is still wrong and is deserving of punishment, it doesn't make having mental health problems a moral failing. Being the cause of a moral failing is not necessarily the same thing as being a moral failing, which I think is important because it's stigmatizes the harmful actions rather than the addiction itself.

Your dysmorphia section got me thinking. When I grew up I didn't understand how women had such amazing full hair, long nails and lashes, smooth lines under clothing, a full bust, clear perfect skin, and amazing makeup. I wish I could go back in time and tell myself early on about extensions/wigs, acrylics, fake lashes, girdles/spanx, push up bras, quality makeup, and access to makeup artists. Oh, and photoshop. The late 90's were fun but man, I'd have saved myself so much drama if I'd have known how much was fake even back then!

@@blackhoodiemusic5873 makeup cant cover up the features you have. sure you can exaggerate features, a la winged eyeliner or false lashes, but makeup doesnt just cover up your face (unless youre a full on makeup artist). Whereas filters can drastically alter your face such as sharpening your chin, lightening your skin, enlarging eyes. also id argue theyre different in that, you can easily tell when someone has makeup on. its not hard to tell if you understand the basics of makeup. I feel that the only people who feel deceived by people wearing makeup are people who dont understand how it works.

@@LycanKai14 I didn't get angry at all, but I was terrified by a picture of me that my dear friend had put filters on, because I looked...un-real. It's like it's put above here; a picture with filters on can easily be mistaken for a real photo - as if the object actually looks like that for real. I have a colored mohawk (and have had so in different lenghts and colors for ca 25 years), but I hardly think someone think I was born with green and fire red hair 😆 Filters just looks so off... As an evil twin or something, and I understand if people get thrown off when meeting someone that they only have seen filtered photos of; then the real human probably looks like the evil twin. Hope that made some kind of sense.

They also allow (in my experience) men to send unwanted pictures to UNDERAGE girls and boys. I’ve reported the pics and accounts when I’ve gotten them but they send two mails, one saying that what I reported goes against the TOS, and another at the same exact minute saying the opposite. Honestly the only reason I use it is because of my friends.

I forgot about the drug dealing thing. In our town we had a situation years ago (before corona) where barcodes started showing up around town. When you scanned them, you were taken to a drug dealer profile on Snapchat. How this dumbass didn't count on anyone telling the police and then having the police look at the profile is beyond me. His experiment didn't last many weeks before he was arrested.

My ex used the snap maps to stalk my location, during and after the relationship. If i went out without him, and he noticed my phone had moved (in one instance, i opened my phone without closing snapchat to pay at the bar) he'd blow up my phone demanding to know where i was and why i hadnt told him. He used it to make a point about locations i was passing (can't remember my birthday but can remember the gin bar I mentioned once?? that I happened to be walking by WHILE messaging him on snapchat) After we broke up, i forgot he had access, and he threatened to sit outside my new uni flat until i left so he could confront me. Safe to say, i'm picky with who can see it now!

Snapchat dysmorphia is just another name for body dysmorphia (not necessarily Body Dysmorphic Disorder). We're seeing higher rates of body dysmorphia in younger and younger people, and one of the correlations is definitely social media [insert spiel here about comparing ourselves to airbrushed lifestyles that might not be perfect behind the scenes, yada yada]. Just not sure why we need a new term for it, though I understand the specificity of the word choice.
