Female snapping turtles lay their eggs in late Spring/eary Summer. They want to find high spots which won't be flooded but which also have a natural slope down towards the water (so the babies can hatch out and scramble down into the water to avoid predators). This means that they will often pick nesting spots right next to the road. So keep an eye out when driving by ponds, lakes, swamps, sloughs, fens, etc. Here I show you that they can hang out in just about any body of water after making a nest.
