that’s one thing about the Fuji system; it is quick and easy to change between regular half-press to focus and back-button focus; you have your back-button always set, and if you want to disable half-press focusing, you simply switch to Manual focusing on the front. Instant back-button focusing.

Another great video Roman. Clear and concise as usual. For me, I nearly always shoot in manual and with auto ISO. That gives me choices with the aperture and the shutter speed depending on the situation and the type of image I want to create. I then keep an eye on the exposure meter and adjust either the aperture or shutter speed if the camera is struggling with the lighting conditions. But at the end of the day it's horses for courses.

I’ve been rocking aperture priority with Fuji’s auto iso set to max 3200 with a minimum shutter speed of 1/250, it’s been great to get out and not spend as much time messing with setting but I’m also glad I started learning manual to get a better understanding of the camera, thanks for all your videos dude !

Man, you know what you're talking about! Subtle enthousiasm here, I like it. I'm pretty technical myself, only not yet on this subject. That's why for me the speed in which you're bringing things is a bit to high for me to keep track/focus. Since I do like what you're doing I'm going to save it for later. I believe that for me it's best to just go out and just start shooting, to get to know this beautiful piece of equipment on my own first. In a few months I'll be coming back here for your tips. Thanks! Keep it up!

I like your approach to street settings Roman. I agree in fixing the ISO at 400-500 as this does give most conditions the bets chance of being in focus with high enough SS and/or DOF. I always trust my manual setting fully using the histogram. Cant rely on the camera to do what I want it to do sadly so never use auto A, SS or ISO even though auto ISO is tempting and then use comp dial to adjust it. Thanks for the video Roman.

Not only is running a higher iso a good idea to gain some headroom when needed…but it’s worth playing with the DR settings as well. Shooting at DR400 can save some shots and also you can dial back to DR100 in camera/post, I believe. The whole point of it is to save your highlights while boosting shadows so it’s a way to create some headroom while otherwise trying to properly expose!

And the pictures you take are a completely different league, congrats. QUICK QUESTION, I know you focus of photography, but any idea how to set the automatic metering for video? cannot find it anywhere, and it seems it is just set to spot metering... which as you mentioned in the video it is not ideal, I wish i could have it set to multi for video as well, any help would be much appreciated!

I have never been able to shoot in any priority modes. I find it much quicker, easier and more intuitive to shoot in manual. But then again, I usually do loops of one place for a while, with the light not changing too much. When shooting in harsh light I typically just use the shutter speed to drastically change the exposure, to get deep shadows. But great video, always interesting to hear how everyone shoots. I guess the most important thing is the end result, regardless of how we get there.

I always like to watch this kind of videos from people who use different systems than I do and try to think how to apply the tips on my system. By the way, I think you didn't mention what lens you use for street photography, it may also be useful. I'm quite new in street photography, I do mostly portraits, but I tried a 50mm (on a full frame camera) and it seemed fine, however, a 35mm may be even better (at least in some scenarios).

Quick comment and this you may already know, but to save one of your fn buttons for another feature try this. If you put your camera into focus mode ALL you then have access to all focus modes quickly. Just press joy stick then turn rear command dial to adjust focus box size. As this reduces size it automatically changes to the appropriate focus mode(I.e. starting from all will go to wide, zone and then single point automatically). Hope this is helpful to you and your viewers.

As street photographers, I think we all struggle for a good while initially with our camera's myriad configurations, always with an eye to being as fast and fluid as possible on the street. As a street photographer who cut his teeth in the analog era, even before in-camera metering was common, this has been especially challenging for me with the newer digital cameras, since previously there were not many choices to be made. One important choice, however, had to do with film ASA. Kodak Tri-X , Ilford HP4/5 and other faster (grainier) films were taken for granted by street photographers; they were essential and grain was a fact of life (which, ironically, many today endeavor to imitate with 'gritty' simulations, even though they will insist in always choosing the lowest ISO possible while shooting). Nobody back in the day would've dreamed of roaming the streets with something like Panatomic-X (ASA 32) or even Plus-X (ASA 100) just in order to achieve finer grain; they would never have achieved decent images in other respects. Yet that's precisely what many today seem to be suggesting. Bear in mind that so-called ISO today has little or nothing to do with ISO/ASA of yesteryear. Digital ISO is added gain, not additional sensor sensitivity; there is a difference. With respect to gain, then, Roman mentions using ISO 500 as a starting point for street shooting and that's a very good idea (good luck otherwise, with respect to acceptable focus and freeze on the street). A better one, however, insofar as Fuji cameras are involved, might perhaps be 640, since Fuji uses a two-step process to bump signal-to-noise. But the second processor only kicks in at 640. That means, for those overly concerned with 'noise', you may actually get less of it and achieve even more latitude at 640 than at 500. I'm no pixel-peeper and will leave it to others to confirm or investigate this further for themselves. Just thought I'd throw it in here, since not too many Fuji shooters seem to be aware of it. Ditto for many other camera brands, although specific numbers may vary.

If I could subscribe again I would, clever Roman. Does the X-T4 have dual-stage manual focus assistance like my current cameras which allow focus on a movable focus area at 6x and 12x magnification. That feature was enlightening and game-changing for exploiting a 42mp sensor when I learned about it and I may be reluctant to change to a different camera system that does not have that feature. Thank you for your work, Roman.
