One of my favorites from the 60's era, is Ringo Starr from the Beatles. He would put towels on his snare to get that punchy, fast snappy muffled snare sound. I've never tried it myself...but the sound is great. I just don't see how that would be as playable as I would want? But then again, his style was much more subdued compared to more modern drum playing in rock and pop that I play. I've had to purchase internal mufflers because they don't usually come with them anymore. My antique Slingerland snare had one. Sadly though, I got rid of it before I even knew what I had. I was young.

What a great informative video, as always. Playing dynamic rimshots on these styles is so important in achieving that funky crack and stylistic sound. Watch some live videos of Richard Spaven and you will always notice that he's playing rimshots on the back beat between the ghost notes. They're so subtle, yet add so much to the overall sound.

Man your playing is always fantastic. After this video I went and watched Mr. Porcaro play the shuffle and it made me realise just how absolutely unreal his touch on the drums was. A true legend.

Great content as always! Using your ears sums it up! I remember being 8 and playing on a toy drum kit trying to emulate Stewart Copeland snare sounds. I though (to my ear) that toy snare sounded like Stewart’s LOL! I had 0 clue of course about the recording process of snare sounds, but in my own way, my ears led me to mimic his tuning sound.

Thanks for doing this video! I agree with you I love the James Brown drum sound! The late Drummers Cylde Stubblefield and John " Jabo" Starks were the most popular of his drummers especially in the mid to the late 1960's! They both said that they tuned their snare drums high ! If you listen real closely to Cylde and Jabo's drumming you can hear the differences between the two drummers... Cylde's style is straight forward funky, and Jabo's is jazzy and laid back! Motown drummer s were so unique sounding as well! Thanks again for sharing this video!🤘🏾🎼

BTW, James Brown's " Funky Drummer " performed by Cylde Stubblefield on the drums, is the most sampled drum break / beat in recorded history! " The Payback " also by James Brown and performed by John " Jabo" Starks, was sampled by numerous artists such as Janet Jackson ( "That's The Way Love Goes!") ,and EnVouge " Hold On", and many more! Hip Hop owes a great debt to the music of James Brown and his funky drummers! Thanks again!

I was just listening to James brown yesterday thinking "wow that's a cracky snare!" Thanks for the breakdown on how to achieve a pretty close sound 🤘interesting point on tuning some lugs higher on the reso. It sounded so good!

Im pretty sure theres a bass drum hit with the snare back beat on Rosanna, which might make it sound fatter and more powerfull.

You should definitely do one about two Ringo sounds... His earlier sound especially on Rubber Soul is way different! You can really hear this on the opening fill in Ride My Car. Then compare this to the fatter snare sound he got by the time the White album came out. Glass Onion and Everybody's Got Something To Hide come to mind straight away!!

Hey guys. I look forward to every Tuesday afternoon. Thanks. My favorite channel. And I'm primarily a singer songwriter! If you were to mic a drum kit using 1 or possibly 3 mics, how would you generally go about doing it? I'm using a Tascam DP-32sd.
