I’ve been listening to a lot of fusion for the last couple of years so I get it, and will definitely listen to this one again. For anyone interested in investigating further, I’d recommend - Oh Yeah - Jan Hammer, Enigmatic Ocean - Jean Luc Ponty, and Where Have I known You Before - Return To Forever. Very broadly these represent the funky, proggy, and rocky strands of fusion respectively, and to me at least, they’re all pretty accessible. The Jan Hammer even has a couple of songs - not always popular with the purists, but One To One in particular was what half the UK singles chart would sound like about 10 years later.

A band I don't personally like but certainly respect. Great musicians in search of great songs.

There was a lot of love for this one on the Discord when we listened to it and while I get why, I didn't feel the same way so I felt a little like I was missing something. I agree with you guys on pretty well all these points. Obviously the musicianship on this album is stellar but I felt absolutely nothing at all on an emotional level listening to this and for me to enjoy something I have to feel *something*. On the bright side I didn't feel negatively about the album either. When listening I actively tried to pick a best and worst song but I didn't really feel like I could as I felt pretty similarly about them all. So yes, a very clean (I kept forgetting it was live) and amazingly performed record that just did not move me. Also scored it 2.5.

Yes.. it needs to be said... I am a big jazz fusion fan. They're so talented yet I can barely remember any song they've ever made. Having said that I have seen them twice and they should be commended for getting a lot of young people into different kinds of music. The best fusion music was made in the 70s... I think Peter Herbolzheimer RC&B represented the pinnacle of big band jazz funk personally and nobody comes close...

Not a huge fan of jazz fusion, myself, but there are some records I think a lot of people can agree are pretty damn great: 1) Mahavishnu Orchestra - Inner Mounting Flame 2) Miles Davis - Tribute To Jack Johnson 3) Return To Forever - Hymn Of The Seventh Galaxy 4) Alphonse Mouzon - Mind Transplant 5) Jeff Beck - Blow By Blow 6) Jeff Beck - Wired 7) Herbie Hancock - Sextant I'm not a big Weather Report fan.

Mahavishnu Orchestra is the single most technically brilliant band of all time... and great intense performances

It certainly was “Snarky” these grandiose body poses, expressions from the musicians while playing, it’s clear they’re very self impressed 😂 There are many examples of “jazz fusion” you could call Joni Mitchell jazz fusion or you could even describe Drake as a kind of jazz fusion, it would be a stretch but his music has been fused with so many genres elements, including jazz rifts. For all their technical expertise this particular fusion leaves me complacent little excitement either way, give me Miles Davis or Winton Marsalis any day

I don't have to have an "emotional reaction" for me to enjoy music.
@179rich2 ай бұрын
Thinking about this some more, I think I always have some degree of emotional reaction, no matter what the music is, even if it's a tiny one, and even if the music is not intentionally trying to elicit any particular emotion(s). IDK. The Snarky Puppy made me feel happy just because I enjoyed listening to it.

Good reviews by Joe and Jason, and I agree. I can't say I like jazz fusion much. As both say, "no edge" and too much sameness, straightforwardness, and unending joy and no downtime! The production makes some instruments seem remote, as maybe in a different studio, or maybe that's my wishful thinking. Technically good, but the originality of Improv is not impressive.

An all timer for me… the band and album that got me into jazz fusion and sent me back to Mahavishnu and Return to Forever. Culcha Vulcha and Sylva are worth checking out, but it sounds like this genre might not be your thing.
@AllMediaReviewsPodcast2 ай бұрын
yeah, unsure. Although I wonder if they saw them live, they might appreciate them more. Yeah, they didn't even care much for Yes's Relayer, so RTF, Mahavishnu..even Metheny may not work for them.

This the one review you’ve done that I’ m totally down with. Perhaps the most absurd comment we’ve all heard is “I didn’t like their music but technically they’re great musicians.”If you don’t make good music you’re not a good musician. Music is neither a sport nor a maths exam.

You can be a great musician and make garbage music, I mean Ummagumma got made. - Joe
@shadowstealer2790Ай бұрын
@ The deeper point is that for me technical/formal ability plays no part in musical judgement.Beyond even that it’s debatable as to what constitutes technical skills in the first place.Most music supergroups fail because they are competing with each other ,rather than leaving space and being aware of the overall group sound.

Fusion is such an up and down genre, lol. When its ass its super ass when its good its the best, for me atleast. You couldn't pay me to listen to Fusion albums twice, while some are desert island records.
