I saw the production in London this past summer. Renee Fleming is, of course, Renee Fleming (I've seen her a number of times over the years). The big surprise is Dove Cameron, who I didn't realize was the girl from one of those Disney shows. Very good!
@@DanielMazz PIAZZA is a traditional musical - songs interspersed with spoken dialogue, as opposed to opera, which is sung through (no dialogue). So in that sense PIAZZA is somewhat like PHANTOM but without the big production numbers.

Oh My God. Such memories of when I saw the original cast/production at The Vivian Beaumont, Summer 2005: with the esteemed cast of Victoria Clark, Kelli O'Hara, Matthew Morrison, Chris Sarandon and Patti Cohenour and Michael Berresse. I nearly cried at the end but held it back, so as not to be bullied by my friends who sat beside me. And in this production with the esteemed Renée Fleming, along with Broadway Legend Brian Stokes Mitchell -- I mean, what wanderlust I had at the time to return "home" to L.A., but work forbade me, darn it! This is, by far, The Greatest Musical Known To Mine Ears...

Had such high hope for this, as Renee Fleming is such an amazing singing actress in opera... but... she does not translate too well in the genre of musical theatre, at all. Could not understand a single word that came out of her mouth at times, as her approach to musical theater, was opera. The group of us left the theater scratching out heads on why she would brave such a performance... otherwise, the production itself was fantastic.
@randomspiel9 ай бұрын
tbh, she probably just wanted to give it a go at her age and stature, and this is one of the most opera-adjacent roles for her to try and translate it. I totally buy it wasn't handled all that well, but I get her doing it.

It sounds like something Sondheim wrote - but rejected. If it's opera, put it in an opera house - but it's opera masquerading as musical theatre. Or the other way around. Fans of one genre are often not fans of the other. I love Sondheim, in fact I adore pretty much everything he wrote, but this is pretentious torture. Sondheim is brilliantly funny, melodic and gorgeous. This is from hell. Could we have a melody please? Rent the film with Olivia de Haviland and Yvette Mimieux. Then have an early night.

It does play opera houses all the time. Much like Pirates of Penzance, it straddles the line.

@paules3437Ай бұрын
Oh my god, what an ignoramus you are. Does it offend your precious sensibilities that there are operatic aspects to the best Broadway score in decades? What's all this about opera "masquerading" as musical theatre? How do you define the difference? "Could we have a melody please?" Sure. How about "Dividing Day" as a simple example? This score is rife with melodies! Besides your beloved Sondheim (whom I revere as well) famously wrote that catch phrase "there's not a tune you can hum" sung by a producer in "Merrily We Roll Along". Also, he himself pointed out in an interview that people used to say, "There's not a tune you can hum" parts of "A Little Night Music." Quoth he: "Sure... but if they hear 'A Weekend in the Country" sung 16 times, THEN they can hum it. I saw this four times in NYC, and appreciated Guettel's genius every time (not to mention Victoria Clark as Margaret, a part she was born to play.)
