I hate the "they're just kids" excuse. So are the queer kids they're bullying. These kids will "grow and change" while queer kids will have to deal with the trauma of living in a world hostile to them their entire lives

@@ErieRosewood These kids aren't victims, they're targets. They aren't personally hurting by being taught to be this hateful in anywhere close to the scope of the queer kids they will traumatize. They might not be *guilty* or had a choice because they simply lack the developed brains to understand what they're saying and believing, but that doesn't make them innocent victims. The fault of their behavior falls to the adults in their lives that aren't teaching them better values, but the actual problem is that a lot of adults condone this kind of behavior, only disagreeing with how explicit these kids are.

I worry about the people around them when these boys become men. A lot of people like to think they'll grow out of it, or they'll get deradicalized when they get older and experience life a little more. I don't think so. How many kids did you know who were terrible to the people around them who didn't grow up to also be terrible adults later? Maybe some. But not most. in addition to that, i worry about the women that will be mistreated, harassed, and assaulted by these boys and (eventual) men. part of the ideology is entitlement over women’s bodies, and that women are the inferior sex that was created to serve men. my own sister dated a guy like this, even thinking about him makes my blood boil. he kept his beliefs a secret and mislead her but i picked up on the dog whistles. this willful ignorance and deep seeded hatred of a significant group of other human beings scares me. the state of our country and culture is frightening (take florida’s legislature for example). algorithms and access to tech at an earlier age compounds this even further.

You know the worst part about this? Sneako's "I was the same way when I was their age." Is like quantifiably wrong. He's only a bit older than me and I've been on KZbin since I was way too young to be on KZbin so I know from experience how wrong he is. Sneako had a KZbin channel around their age. I SAW IT. He was definitely edgy, but more than that he was fairly eloquent and knowledgeable and thought provoking for his age. I remember a few years back, way before what he does now, he did an interview with a nonbinary KZbinr where they talked about gender and sexuality and he wasn't fucking bell hooks but he approached the conversation with respect and was willing to learn. This new Sneako is definitely fucking disgusting, but worse it's disappointing.

He was at a moral crossroads and just leaned into the side that was going to make him money, and you know, that's sad for him but also that we have a system that generally awards people being misanthropic and causing harm to other people.

as a black queer person i resent the way that folks-most commonly those who identify as liberal-always hyperfocus on giving ppl that perpetuate violence endless grace to the point that they forget to have equal amounts of empathy for the victims of that violence. i see that in this video; your acknowledgment of the fact that the childrens' blind regurgitation of sneako's rhetoric has real-life repercussions was only a footnote. it has big "everybody was edgy when they were 14, give them a break!" vibes and then the edginess in question was racism 😭 while that edgy 14 year old may grow out of their racism, their peers that had to deal with the fact that little johnny was an avid idubbbz watcher carry that trauma and then are told by society that they have to forgive the person that hurt them or even feel bad for them... it leaves you feeling very gaslit. the children in that sneako video WERE terrible for being misogynistic/homophobic/transphobic and they are also victims, those things are not mutually exclusive.

@banquetoftheleviathan1404 notice in my original comment i said "then the edginess in question was racism," my entire point is that ppl tend to treat young perpetrators of the -isms especially with more care than they do their young victims. that includes mincing words when discussing their bigotry i.e. calling racism/sexism/queerphobia "edgy." i have no attachment to the edgy label and even if i did, words can have different meanings depending on the context

i was sat here trying to find the right words to say exactly what you've just said so thank you. I was that queer kid in school and now I am a teacher doing my best to protect all the kids, including the queer kids, under my care and I see the same things. The 'edgy' borderline racist, homophobic kids get to grow out of it, forget and move on however the trauma sticks with those that they bullied. It was very hard to sit here and watch a similar rhetoric be pushed. The kid from the sneako vid will most likely be just fine - i agree he is being groomed and pushed down a pipeline. it sucks and those kids need protection, however people have a right to feel angry and overall I'm more worried about the queer kids he may be interacting with at school.

Actually Sneako is 180° removed from his original form. He was actually a critical thinker in the beginning of his quest for social media relevance and produced thoughtful and mostly open minded videos where he was questioning real societal ills but he got very little traction. After struggling to break out for years he came across the exploding man-o-sphere and saw the potential and started to adopt those talking points. As he started to blow up he got stuck in a loop which required him to say and believe worse and worse stuff in exchange for more and more clicks. It's crazy, look it up.

It's genuinely heartbreaking hearing my disabled family members villainize vulnerable groups we are or should be in solidarity with. My safe phrase is "I know who's taking food from my mouth, & it's not ____ [other disabled folks, LGBTQ+, refugees, striking workers, whoever they're being bigoted towards that moment]." But it's so inadequate. The amount of damage rightwing rhetoric has done is untold + bottomless.

At some point the parents are at fault too. Kids can still "rebel" by being "edgy" from caring parents that try to teach them respect and kindness, but that is not the majority of what is happening. There is a level of emotional neglect that allows this behavior to become a problem, that and many parents are likely reinforcing the bigotry. My brother grew up to be a raging misogynist because my parents never corrected him or talked to him about the sexist things he said and always chalked it up to "he is just joking." They look back on that now and regret it, because now it is negatively affecting his life and they finally understand that it also affected my life as well.

I feel sympathy for the queer kids they will severely harm in the process of them becoming the bare minimum of decent people. This will be a phase in their lives they *might* grow to regret and is going to take the same amount of deprogramming that is basically the same as the mandatory deprogramming every queer person had to do in their own discovery and figuring out how to even exist in the world. But the queer kids will also have the added trauma and deep scars of exclusion and persecution of their peers and society at large that isn't just solved with a few years of personal development where you come out a better person. It's the kind of thing that forces queer kids back into the closet with only self-harm and suicidal ideation to keep them company, and saying it's going to take a lifelong therapy to manage it is still an understatement.

And then he'd go online and talk about how proud he is of those kids. But between him back-pedaling when confronted with his own words, him brushing it off as a joke, and him trying to push the blame onto others, it shows that he's not really proud of himself. And I'm being optimistic here, but maybe this is the first step to deradicalization. If there is any humanity left in him, then maybe he'd be like "that was embarrassing, maybe I sould dial back."

They won't grow without their own concerted effort to be better.

As a girl in middle school i mean the boys were awful with their "jokes". My age, middle school was when idubbbz saying the n word was popular and all that edgy stuff. It really gave this boys an armour to sit behind. They could make fun of their percieved out-group and bully people by making them outsiders through quoting these kinds of memes and content at people. It was terrible and when confronted they would always be like "its just a video online/ its just a joke/ its just a meme", and gett off scot free

I'm still waiting for Cr1tikal to do an update on this situation. He platformed Sneako and basically forgave him for the drama between the two of them, while not really even addressing this side of things. But then, he also defended Dillon Danis harrassing Nina Agdal and threatening to release revenge porn of her, basically just calling it regular fight drama. Charlie's often got a good viewpoint on things, but he's been very wrong a few times recently and it sucks to see.

IMO Charlie has always been a pretty run of the mill centrist rich KZbin boy who’s gotten popular off of making p rudimentary moral beliefs, such as “pedophilia is bad” or “don’t assult people”, seem like insanely hot takes when really they’re the opinions of the majority. However, as soon as a situation is more complex or requires him to step outside himself, such as with Idubbz’s apology, he physically can’t and ends up spewing a lot of gamer gate-esque rhetoric

I think any reasonable person who saw that video, of Sneako and his fans interacting, would find it revolting and quite sad, something I also found it be. I was revolted and saddened by what I saw. But I was terrified by it. I am Jewish and that video to me genuinely scary. Sneako has pushed many disgusting and bigoted ideologies via his platform, one of those being antisemitism. Antisemitism has been rapid incline for some time and it is getting very scary out there. It is clear that this fan interaction is not going a wake up for Sneako and I despite his saying "we love everyone" to his fans I firmly think he found it all very amusing. He is someone that in my opinion should be allowed to have a platform. He should have been banned much early then he was from the many social media sites that have banned him. I am wishing for the safety for all us who are affected and harmed by words and actions of Sneako and those like him.

There is a long standing trend of blaming children for things that are clearly the fault of adults in their lives, and it's always really bothered me. You see it a lot with child actors or really any public facing young people at all, like with the way disney channel actors were often blamed for things that were clearly the fault of their producers and of disney itself, or things that were simply normal healthy things for children to do. And while children obviously have a degree of accountability for the things they do (especially in a far more serious situation like this one) the blame should ALWAYS rest on the authority figures who have let those children down first. "Poor Sneako, imagine having fans like these"?? They didn't spring up out of nowhere to ruin his reputation, they are the direct result of everything harmful thing he has said and done and frankly he deserves a lot worse than being embarassed by a fan in public for that. Not just because of the way he has harmed his fans, but because of the way his fans will continue to hurt the people in their own lives.

Kids are getting radicalized. Yesterday I was at an anti-SOGI counter protest in Canada and had a child that must have been ~9ish rip up my pride flag. Him and his brothers / mother called my group of queer activists ~parasites~. I’ve been doing activism for a long time and in the past few years seeing more hateful / Indoctrinated children It’s clear that they were just kids and they’re the product of their environment- but I’m so worried for the vulnerable kids of marginalized identities who are sharing a school with kids who think this behaviour is good.

As much as I appreciate the comments saying "queer kids are just kids too", I do want to stress that when I was teaching middle school (in the deep south) it became very evident to me that most of these kid's bigotry wasn't based on anything except wanting to be cool and liked by the adults they looked up to. I'm a queer teacher and even the kids who held bigoted views treated me with respect because they knew I was going to treat them the same way. They didn't say bigoted things to their classmates anywhere near me because they knew that it would result in my disappointment and a genuine conversation about why they believed those things. When they said bigoted things behind my back, I had created enough of an empathetic and communicative classroom culture that my queer students felt empowered to defend themselves, and the cis/het kids who didn't hold bigoted views often came to their defence. I had a student a few years ago who had some bigoted ideas and leanings that he'd learned from both his family and the content creators that he watched. I'll call him Student A. He would often misgender one of my trans students, who I'll call Student B. Student B thankfully could hold his own, but since he knew that he had the support of both his parents and me, the misgendering would often lead to the two students getting into arguments. One day they got into a really big argument outside during free time, which I noticed and had to break up. I talked to Student A about what he had been saying and how he wasn't treating his fellow student with respect, and we left the conversation there (there's not much more I could do in the south unfortunately). The next day, Student B brought brownies in for the class and I let him pass them around before lunch. He brought enough for everyone and I didn't think anything of it. A few minutes later, student A asked to talk to me in the hall. He was absolutely shocked that Student B had given him a brownie, and immediately started telling me how guilty he felt for having been rude to him the previous day. He said (completely unprompted) that he needed to apologize for how he had been treating him and then went and did so. They didn't have any other issues for the rest of the year. I guess my point is that you're absolutely right to feel empathy for these kids. Queer kids are just kids, but kids who are bigots are just kids too, and even the slightest bit of support and compassion from a responsible adult can pull them out of the pipeline before they fall in too deep. It doesn't excuse their behavior or the people they hurt, but they can change and it's 100% on the adults in their life to take responsibility and try to help them be better people, and it's 100% on the adults in their life to create an environment where queer kids and ally students can feel empowered to defend themselves and each other.
