George becali The New Zealand DOC (Department of Conservation) tag wild keas in the wild and let them go instantly. It's a way of tracking the species' population - they are classified as VULNERABLE so need be to tracked and monitored in this way. If the kea is dead they can locate it and do an autopsy to find out why.

While teaching skiing at the resorts in NZ I was around these birds every day, they are incredible creatures, you only have to see the way they look at you to know they are smart. They could unzip jacket pockets to get sweets from inside and pretty much love anything chewy. They can work as teams and would strip the rubber off cars in the car park. I even saw a bus driver make the mistake of leaving the door open one day... They trashed the inside. Wonderful birds but so mischevious.
