Fishing in the surf is incredibly popular, yet many anglers still struggle with it. Where do you start? How do you feel the bites in all that wash? What's the best way to hook and land fish? In this video I do my best to answer those questions and more.
If you love this video and my channel, please consider shouting me a beer (or a coffee!) to help me produce lots MORE great KZbin content for your viewing pleasure! Simply go to: www.buymeacoffee.com/starlo
Thanks... and cheers!

Another brilliant video mate, winter beach fishing is super tough and your always informative vids, as always, show innovative and productive methods to turn what most may find a dry result into a moisty. Its actually been years since Ive been able to fish an Aussie beach but prior to that I'd spent decades flinging whole ganged pillies a mile on 10kg through ridiculously tiring 13ft telegraph poles resulting in an experience with all the sensitivity of wearing 3 condoms regardless of the glorious setting. I walked past a stand a couple of weeks ago with some 9-10ft, 4-6kg, 2pc rods I would have previously considered impractical but the modern design, silky touch and featherlight weight enticed me to stop and muse. Even though it was my birthday and I was headed to Sussex Inlet the next week I declined to 'bite' however, a decision in hindsight I regret, particularly in light of this incredibly inspiring vid. Once again my friend you have me back at the cashier, chucking bucks with impunity and without a skerrick of regret. Hope to catch you on the sand one day for some comraderie or at least to point out to my wife the dude responsible.

Great video, brought back fond memories of my best ever surf fish!! Also in the dying moments of light, and also on a Catana (slightly heavier 9 foot one w 20lb fluoro leader and a 1/0). Very similar battle but mine took me about 200m along the beach. Leader popped at a wind knot as I dragged it out of the suds. That sambo was 78cm on the bragmat (maybe 5kg?). A memory I’ll always treasure. Was a very wet time reviving it, but worth it to watch it swim majestically away.

I do spell it out in the video, but you might have missed it: Shimano Catana Light Surf/Coastline Light rod, 2500 or 3000 Vanford reel, 8 to 10 pound Kairiki braid and 10 to 12 pound fluorocarbon leaders (Ocea FC).

What about those days when there are decent bites continuously but no hook ups? Go the next day and 3 out of 5 bites get hooked. Is it the mood of the fish? Is there anything else you can do? I've tried different bait/hook sizes, different types of hooks, different ways of putting the bait on and also letting them run with the bait without any tightness in the line but on those days it doesn't seem to make a difference what I do. I generally use Gamakatsu circle hooks, generally using pilchard because that gets the most bites this season. Cheers.
@StarloGetsReel
@StarloGetsReel 5 ай бұрын
In my experience, when you’re missing a lot of bites they are generally smaller fish with small mouths. Especially whiting, mullet and bream. You can either down-size your hooks and baits… or wait for something bigger to come along.

Also Dart are a very common pest of larger pilchard baits, Sydney and northwards. Put on a long shank mustad size 4 or 6 and it can be great fun catching several in quick succession.

I run 8 or 10 pound Kairiki braid as my main line and about a rod length of leader all up, usually 12 or 16 pound Ocea Fluourocarbon. The sinker runs to a swivel about 40cm back from the hook or hooks. I like to run a pair of 1/0 hooks when fishing with half a pilchard.
