bro ha I’d be willing to bet that 90% of people that tell themselves that either have poor money management skills and/or out of wack priorities. If you can’t afford a 6$ package of TP in order to save 50% per roll compared to a place like the DT, then you are doing something seriously wrong.

I remember being at a point where I had to borrow $10 for gas money to get to work, and there was a dollar store that sold fresh fruits and vegetables (which is pretty common in California because produce is so cheap) next to my new job, and it sustained me with 50 cent balanced meals for long enough to get my savings back up. I was broke because I had just moved into a new apartment before losing my job, I usually keep a cash reserve, but between moving and losing my job at the same time it was gone. I'm actually quite financially secure now.

I still think it comes down to budgeting. For instance with the toilet paper, you'd be a lot better off saving to buy the bigger pack which will last longer and cost half the price than regularly buy a four pack for a dollar, I can see why this is difficult but you'll be a lot better off for it. Not knowing how to budget and save money keeps a lot of people in poverty, it should be taught in schools

Actually about that toothpaste the 4oz is about 4$ at Walmart and the 2.5 oz is 1$ at dollar tree so if you buy 2 at dollar tree not only are you spending half the price you’re also getting more toothpaste 😂
@twdjt6245
@twdjt6245 5 жыл бұрын
Wrong. I just looked it up myself real quick...typed in “Colgate toothpaste” on Walmart’s site....simply because of my suspicion that there’s no way in hell that what looks like Colgate’s cheapest toothpaste costs 4$ a tube at Walmart ...and I was right. A 3 pack of that exact toothpaste in 6oz tubes costs 4$ there. 4$/18oz = .22c/oz 1$/2.5oz @ Dollar Tree = .40c/oz .... so....... bulk purchasing for the win yet again. I mean don’t get me wrong the Dollar tree is good for *some* things, I get greeting cards there, balloons, sometimes they have large boxes of brand name cereal there that would cost like 4$ elsewhere...certain condiments..., moisture absorbers and so on......but the guy in this video was correct, when it comes to like 95% of consumables there, especially those with brand names, you’re better off buying in bulk. Not only cheaper per unit/Oz, but you also save on gas and time compared to heading there every 2 weeks to get another 2.5oz tube of toothpaste.

these stores are a hit an miss. Many products (chap stick, party goods for kids, some craft supplies, Easter basket goodies, party favors for kids, single-use items, greeting cards) are good. The cleaning supplies are hit and miss. In all honesty, shopping at a dollar tree/dollar store depends on what your getting, what its use is, and why your getting it. It's a life saver for many many folks. If you live in a food desert, or it's 10-15 miles (or further) from say, CVS or Walgreens (Walgreens is a 50 mile one way drive for me) and for some people in my county- there is only one walmart. Depending on where you live in my county, you can be 10 minutes away or a 2 hour drive round trip. Dollar store is 10-15 minute drive-roughly 20 minutes in some area. For some, dollar tree is a life saver.

Love these inexpensive stores. Helped my family and I go through a rough time in our life. The problems with these chains is that they’re more likely, than the a little more expensive stores, to have expired products on their shelves. I remember nearly buying some of the food there that were a month expired and the kind lady who’d worked there at the checkouts pointed that out to me, I was shocked. And it wasn’t a few items that were passed their expiration dates either. Needless to say I still go back everywhere now and then with a few dollars and in hand and come back home with a handful of items. I’m just a lot more careful with reading the expired dates though. In bigger chain stores they usually have extra color coded labels telling you the item is about to expired which is nice and doesn’t exist in those dollar chain store I’ve ever been in including family dollar, and dollar tree

I feel like they need to do more research on where dollar stores get their products from; which factories specifically. I wouldn't be surprised if a big company like Duracell for batteries goes to the same manufacturer as a third-party battery company and just slaps a different name on it and charges a higher amount because of name. The same could be said for clothes etc.

We live off of a janitor's and teacher's income. We avoid dollar stores because we discovered back in college (when we were below the poverty level) that we spent less money over time buying in bulk and buying only quality items. Sure, we have to make trade-offs to do it. But we have a lot more peace of mind not having to replenish our essentials every week. We're very glad that we listened to my mom, who grew up extremely poor, when she told us to stop throwing away our money at dollar stores if we wanted to spend less.

Everything at Dollar Tree is 1 dollar. I buy my toilet paper from BJ’s. People just need to know how to shop. The best bargain is the books. I specifically go for them. I’ve gotten Martin Short’s autobiography and one of Whoopi Goldberg’s titles, 2 bucks as opposed to almost 40 for both titles. Sometimes they also have yarn, which regular price for a ball can be 5.99 or more, one time I got 50 bucks worth for 5 dollars! And further more, never EVER buy food from the dollar store, except gummy bears because some stores have the nerve to sell a smaller package for 99 cents.

I politely disagree. When a carbon zinc battery has a leak,, it leaves acid on the terminals inside your radio/flashlight/camera Et al. Long term, terrible place to shop, But most people that dollar stores target don't have that income to buy in bulk so in a way, it's costly yes but cheaper up front. quick side note, when I was in college I would buy everything at the dollar store and it would last me for at least 2 weeks. I think or single family homes or individuals, its still a better alternative

Edward Ornelas That’s why you have to share club member ships with people. I am extremely low income, but you have to know what to buy from the clubs, like toilet paper and frozen veggies and meat. Spiral Breeze exactly. Or do a little couponing. I coupon a bit when it comes to household/personal care/beauty items and don’t remember the last time I paid for toothpaste, and most of the deals I do to get them (usually cvs/Walgreens) literally takes no planning and less than 2 minutes in the store. Couponing is easier now than ever before. No newspapers etc necessary. All it takes is a little effort and you get free or dirt cheap stuff you need anyways.

I look at the weekly ads and have the apps installed to choose the coupons and per trip I save an average of ten bucks or more on purchases of 25 bucks or more. Family Dollar and Dollar General were my GO TOS to buy diapers for my daughter! Instead of paying about $27 for pampers diapers I’d get the box for $18 :)

I thought everyone knew this. Dollar stores are good for throwing a cheap party with decorations and kids prizes. Sometimes people are looking for small or trial size products. Also, a lot of the lower income people don't have cars so they have to be able to carry everything on public transit so the small size is better.

Well, dollar stores that still cheaper. Because the more of something we have the more we overuse it. The less of something we have the more reason conservatively. Like for toothpaste. Did you know that you only supposed to put about half a dime-sized on your toothbrush? And that you're not supposed to swallow toothpaste. It can be poisonous. So and this momentum of fact. It's common sense. If I save $10 at this store then I'm going to spend $20 at another store cuz I was able to say. I get what they're doing but the end of the day dollar stores are much cheaper. And we don't need large packages of things anymore. That's what's creating so much waste. If we actually use Things based on the recommended serving. We could cut our garbage production at half I would say in about 10 years. Now I went and bought a type c charger from my Samsung Galaxy tab S3. If I went to any other store I would have to pay over $20. But here I pay $10. Because I bought two and they were $5 each. So at the end of the day you got to think about this just because you're spending more money on it doesn't mean that is worth it.
@milliezhu
@milliezhu 5 жыл бұрын
I am not completely agreeing with your statement about cutting garbage production in 10 years, because large packages can sometimes create less trash and small packages can sometimes lead to more trash. Think about cookies or chocolate bars, the individually wrapped ones inside a bigger plastic package. They made them in small size packaging or "travel-size", but that would usually create more mess around our neighbourhoods. The park is often filled with small pieces of plastic in the grass, but not large size packages, because people bring large size packages to home and throw them out in the trash or recycling bin, not bring them outside. Small size packaging on certain goods can not only lead to more garbage, but more garbages outside in public attractions. But if you are talking about, say, gift cards, which were not usually individually wrapped when selling them at the dollar store, but were usually wrapped in plastic boxes when selling them in bulk, I can see how that could eliminate some waste. I just think you should be more specific in how large packages are creating more waste. The "recommended servings" usually puts our portions inside of small packages and even smaller packages or puts our portions in multiple small packages. If that is the case, just buy one big package of the good and measure out your own servings and put it into reusable containers. This will usually be more environmentally friendly especially for liquid product goods like soda.

@Grim Soul Well I like your optimism, but even if you meant just the US, or even just in one state, simply relying on dollar stores' small packaging would not cut down the waste in 10 years. Let's not forget that we have a rapid growing population. Dollar store suppliers would only produce more packaging waste to keep up with the growing demands. We would be in luck if the amount of waste produced stays the same after 10 years, let alone reducing it. Instead of thinking that dollar stores' small packaging would reduce waste in 10 years, it is more realistic to think about the 3Rs (making waste not a waste), or to consider about implementing plastic-ban policies (like the plastic straw ban in Canada).

News Flash, most of these store setups are industry standards and it doesn't matter what store you go to. For instance every store including Lowe's and Menard's puts impulse purchase items at, or near the checkout. I live in a small farming town almost half an hour from the nearest Walmart. However, our town has a Dollar General and an IGA. I can get everything I need and be back home before I could even get to Walmart. Have you ever noticed how grocery stores make you walk through the whole store to get a loaf of bread?

For people on a fixed income, it's vital to have a store with fixed prices. Also, many of their customers cannot access Amazon due to not having access to credit cards & computers, so they have to use cash or debit cards (if they have a bank account). Most dollar stores not accept EBT cards for food purchases, so if a person happens to be on food stamps, they can get food on a daily or weekly basis instead of having to spend large amounts like they would at other stores. I make a list & rarely stray from it when I shop at dollar stores.
