Did you know that thee snell knot was one of the most popular knots back in the day because hooks didn't have eyes with holes that you can pass a line through?
Yep, the "old school" hooks had what appeared to be a flat, circular “eye” at the end of the shank without a hole in it.
Today, the snell knot is very effective when used with circle hooks, octopus hooks, and creating a tandem hook rig, where one or multiple hooks are above one another.
And as you will see in this knot video, there is a pretty easy way to tie the snell knot.

I think the Snell knot is stronger when the loops are made over both lines on the shank, not in this Uni fashion - one can also put a small rubber tube on the line where it goes through the eye, to reduce friction between top of the knot and bottom of the eye.

Agree 100%. Tie this in light line and you can break it easily. Nail knot is better and easy to tie with a hollow tube. I used a piece of thin rod tip.

Interesting that you did this as a Uni knot. I love the Snell for live or chunk bait, but essentially it is not tied like a Uni at all, but is a form of the classic Nail Knot. In the olden days the Nail Knot was tied with a nail, but today it is better tied with a coffee straw. I actually prefer the little yellow Caprisun straws as they are more rigid. You can of course tie the Snell without any straw or helper as mono or flouro is a bit wirey. Just takes a bit of practice. Since I tend to always have to re-Snell a lost hook on the water with waves, I keep little 1/3 segments of the straws lying about in each of my tackle box/bags.

ruben madrid I've always tied it as a Nail Knot. Here is a short video, (not my video), that gives a good demonstration of that method. I don't think the Uni method is necessarily bad, just different from what I've seen. I like a loop knot for inshore live bait to give more freedom of movement, but any cut or live bait scenarios work well with the Snell. It is a compact knot based on constriction, so no chafing or crossing of line within the knot, and great for offshore fishing as it is very compact knot with large diameter mono/flouro lines. I love using the nail knot and use it almost exclusively. To me the uniknot though easy to tie is nothing but an upside down nail knot ….. as far as tying a snell knot there seems to be as many way to tie it as there are fishermen and we must always remember that a “Snell” is just the piece of line tied onto the hook and not the actual knot.

I don't like using knots that slides along the shaft of the hook when tightening it down while using flourocarbon. It seems to weaken the line no matter how much spit or water I use to lubricate the line. Seems ok with mono. I use the simple snell knot instead.

I fish red snapper and grouper in gulf best guys I know use Snell. I get plenty of hook ups with uniknot but the Snell has better hookup ratio. I have fished with commercial grouper guy and he Snell's his hook. Also professional bass fisherman Snell when flipping.

The problem with getting bit off is a little exaggerated imo. If you hook a toothy critter with a snell knot or any other leader to hook connection it's not going to matter. The only real solution is a wire leader, not a uni or fisherman's knot above the eye. However, there is a flaw with this type of snell knot in that while it's doubtful a sharp toothed fish could cut through the coils wrapped around the shank it could snip the line on top of the coils causing the knot to fail very easily. A snell knot with the tag end inside the coils will prevent that. The second demonstration in the linked video is a much more secure knot. Personally I tie my snell by forming a loop and winding coils from the top of the shank towards the loop and pass the tag through the loop, then pull both the main and tag. As for teeth cutting it off I need a very sharp knife to remove these coils from the hook with a properly tied snell knot and I mainly use the spade style hook. It takes a leap of faith to trust these hooks but once you figure out that it's not going to fail you'll never use eye hooks again because they just look stupid. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bYTFfH6GfLCpeMU

Straight circle hooks (as opposed to those with a slight offset) are becoming mandatory for bait fishing in some areas. Also, be aware that you do not "set" circle hooks, but rather let the fish hook itself as it moves off and puts tension on the line.
