Seeing Gradius III SNES run so smooth like this is surreal, and definitely shows how much dedication there's been to improve emulation and such for the SNES emulation. Amazing and impresssive run! Some things without slowdown were much crazier to see, I always favored this version of Gradius III over AC so I really need to give this hack a try.

@@paxhumana2015 Some of those were removed to balance the game out, the arcade version didn't fare well in Japan I hear, Konami yanked it out fast. This game was made with the console gamer in mind, so Konami, fully knowing they'd only make money once from each cart sold, balanced the game out, making it fairer.

That was an excellent run. Man, after seeing how fast those bosses are in this hack, I think the game was designed around the slowdown because there's no way most people would be able to avoid those attacks without it.

The arcade had tremendous slowdown at times too. Maybe not as much as the SNES, but it most definitely was noticeable. That said, playing through the hack of this DID make me realize that much of the game speed was actually tuned with the slowdowns in mind. Because without it, some things are just unnaturally fast, even when compared to the arcade games. And especially compared to Gradius 2, which didn’t suffer from a lot of performance issues at all.

I think this just went from the worst to the best version of the game :-) for people wondering which emu to use, Defintely go with retroarch, b-snes performance core set with 1 frame of run ahead :-) or you can use a high frame delay if run ahead displeases you. Frame delay might add stuttering if set too high though.

Excellent playthrough! But the last 2 minutes of this vid perfectly demonstrates why I don't play this game anymore. One death can LITERALLY equal game over when it occurs in the wrong spot. Or at least put you back SEVERAL lives trying to recover due to how unbalanced this game is. Watching you lose all those lives because of that fact hurt my soul! And I am not without skill at SHMUPS I'll also add. I regularly practice at 3 DoDonpachi games for fun. Plus titles like crimson clover, mars matrix, varth, raiden fighters I/II, etc. And I never have that issue in any of them. This is truly an impressive playthrough!
@adamdenardis54382 жыл бұрын
What you do is first speed up as much as possible and dodge everything you can while grabbing more powerups but save them until you die so you can activate them instantly again on the next life. If you don't, there's no way to dodge any of the bullets or ships. It's possible to beat the game with no powered up weapons, but it's tough! Just bob and weave. 😂

Second loop on Arcade is really insane. So far I think nobody managed to beat it on SA-1. Great job on the run. I always watched your Touhou Lunatic runs and wondered if someday you would end up playing my SNES ROM hack Touhou Mario 2... But I have to finish it at the first place :P And I think it's possible to pass checkpoint on the stage 2 if you get to the secret bonus stage that is nearby that part...

1.Which is the hardest shoot 'em up between the arcade version of Gradius III (or as i like to call it, the acutal Gradius III) or the original japanese 1 player version of Fire Shark (Same! Same! Same!)? 2.When you said "It was redesigned so much in fact, that it's basically a different game now" i've to totally agree with you. This is basically a reboot of Gradius II. Many of the stages behaves like the one seen in Gradius II, such: -Volcano Stage (First Part) -Moai Stage -High Speed Stage (quite altered) -Mechanical Base (same colors and style as Gradius II one) Also, i considerate this a reboot of Gradius II because: 1) The title logo it's just a palette-swap of the Gradius II one and the II was changed with a III. 2) The power meter select screen is basically the same as the Gradius II one. 3) The colour of the font, such "Start" is the same as the Gradius II one. 4) Also when the game says "Start", the screen it's basically the same as the Gradius II one. Nothing to say, this version is more Gradius II than Gradius III. 3.Could it be that Gradius III is brutally difficult for the same reason as the original Japanese 1 player version of Fire Shark (Same! Same! Same!)?

It's kinda amazing to see just how much difference having this fast chip actually makes. And to think, Nintendo was originally thinking about including the FX chip directly in the console at one point. Imagine how utterly mind boggling things could have been if that had actually happened and was a part of the core SNES console from day one, for not just 2D on they system but 3D also. . . .
@adamdenardis54382 жыл бұрын
Sega Genesis almost had something like that. The chip used in Ivrtua Racing was supposed to be used in more games and even an adaptor at one point. Then the 32X quickly replaced that expensive idea and then ended just as quickly. Man the things that would have been possible... We even almost got a Sega Neptune which would have had the 32X built into the Genesis from the start!
@inceptional2 жыл бұрын
@@adamdenardis5438 To be fair, by not thinking about this kind of expanding the capabilities via a chip on the cart thing as in Virtua Racing from day one, Sega was really doomed with taking advantage of this kind of concept from the start. And the over-priced Virtua Racing and all the crappy add-ons and new versions of some variation of Genesis console that do exist and the other ones that almost did exist, just wasn't ever going to work. But Nintendo, while being stupid and not having a faster CPU in the console from the start, had the right idea by thinking about enhancement chips in the carts from literally day one, and it was taken full advantage of in over 70 titles. So this thought exercise makes a little more sense with the SNES than it does with the Genesis. But, yeah, it would have been really cool if Sega had ignored all the other garbage add-ons and the like it shovelled out and just keep adding cool expansion chips directly into standard Genesis games as it neared the end of its lifespan imo, although much less practical and cost-efficient for Sega than Nintendo, again, because Nintendo thought of this stuff from the very start.

Did you know that if you play very frequently, you can make precise movements and memorize stage layouts in order to strategize around them? And that turning on captions can show you some of those strategies? Leave the TAS accusations for players on Jaimers’s level- they actually know what TAS play looks like! You sound like the sorts of people who’d throw cheating accusations at an NES mario speedrunner because they jumped through a piranha plant.
