Man this game was wicked hard, I couldn't even get past the second level. Probably because I was just a lil kid when I played this, but I sure didn't mind playing that epic intro level over and over again, it was so cool!

At start, we briefly see the famous R-Type reactor-core, until camera immediately zooms out at lighting speed. This is the legendary true source of the ships power and it can not be destroyed, even if the ship itself is blown to smithereens.

and yet in R-type final 2, there's a whole graveyard dedicated to these thousands of ships that have fallen in battle. First time seeing such a level composed of nothing but these ships, it was jarring. It was even terrifying knowing so many ships were just... thrown away. But who knows how many held the corpses of their pilots.

@@RenGraes The facts that the stage is called "Graveyard of Trans-Dimensional Fighters", that you need to complete the stage to build the R-9Leo Leo, and that the writeup on the R9-Leo Leo states that a Leo fighter was found in a dimensional rift which allowed them to develop the R9-Leo Leo from, leads me to believe that this is no ordinary junkpile in space but rather the dimensional rift in question where the Leo fighter was found and that Untold Hordes of Different timelines and dimensions worth of R Fighters ended up stranded or dying in transit between dimensions. Crazy to think about how the pilot of the R-9WB might still be alive within Fenrir still under the effects of the brain poisoning of the Happy Days, or perhaps Fenrir itself Is effected by the Happy Days brain wave alteration.

agreed. the games got weird and lame later on. r-type final was a massive diasppointment and more like gradius bullet hell. wtf was up with the fornicating people in that boss fight, right? so stupid.
