Thanks for quoting my Retro Gamer article - it was one I pitched for ages and finally got to write. As mentioned in the article, the publisher changed the level order so you faced the space level first - which gives people the wrong impression of the overall game. And the comic sections came from a promotional comic that was published, I managed to track a copy down while I was writing the article. And yes, I prefer the Japanese box art too.
@carn9507
@carn9507 Жыл бұрын
I don't think the japanese art is very representative of the game though. I remember buying this game largely based on it's UK box and despite not really caring for most 3D games at that time I was curious about this one got really into it and it's still one of my faves for SNES.

I played this when it first came out. My brother and I were so excited, and, oh god, the controls and relentless difficulty were awful. That being said, my brother found cheat codes in Nintendo Power that gave infinite health, lives, and energy, so we could actually play through the game on god mode. That made it much better.

I owned this game as a kid, and honestly... I loved it! I never, ever beat it, except by using Game Genie codes to cheat -- but I could consistently at least get to Magmemo, the stage after the race stage (which I OWNED every time!), and I always enjoyed playing those early stages and getting better and better at them. And to this day, I consider Vortex to have one of the best soundtracks on the entire platform, which is not a claim I make lightly... but, like, the first stage theme doesn't fully repeat until after TEN MINUTES, which is absolutely insane! And while the first stage itself is boring as dirt (I usually used a password to skip that one), that first stage theme is practically legendary. Definitely a flawed game in a lot of ways, but I'll always consider it a classic, and have a special place in my heart for it.

This is one of my favorite games to come back to from time to time. It's far too difficult to play normally, so cheats are a must. It also has the best SNES soundtrack. For the longest time in the 00s, I thought this game was a weird fever dream where I rented a crazy 3d game that played on my SNES, unthinkable, only to rediscover it at a gas station that sold retro games. Kinda silly.

It's one of my fave SNES games and one of the few 16 bit era 3D games I really enjoy. I never had any issue with the controls. And I found it a lot more involving than Starfox (which I only really enjoyed the first couple levels of). And certainly trounces some other Super FX games like the god awful Stunt Race Fx. Also one of the best soundtracks too. I definitely agree with the high quality of the music.

Well, I do know it's possible to boost the SuperFX framerates significantly by means of software optimisation. There's this Starfox mod that really pushes it up to today's standards in terms of playability. That one, though, has been years in the making by a dedicated team, so I'm sure it was difficult as heck.
@rars0n

Vitor Vilela does SA1 hacks of various games like Contra III. However, the SA-1 is essentially just another 65816 processor (same as the SNES CPU), but much faster, whereas the SuperFX chip is an entirely different beast (although about the same clock speed as the SA1). In the back of my mind, given the extra years of knowledge and modern tools available, it's tempting to think that there's room for improvement. However, Argonaut literally designed and developed the SuperFX chip, so they probably knew more about the hardware than anyone ever will. I'm not sure that anything short of porting it to SuperFX2 hardware would make a significant difference.
@rorz999

I admire the ambition of games like this, but honestly the Super FX chip was better used in games like Yoshi's Island for sprite scaling and little flourishes here and there. Games that used it for their foundation weren't great (and have aged horribly)

I had this one when it first came out. It has a HUGE learning curve! Every form had it's own control configuration. But once you got used to it, it was a really fun game. There was really nothing like it at the time, and the ability to transform at will was something we had never experienced before. By the time I finished it for the first time, I was pretty good at piloting the vehicle and could go through the game quickly. By today's standards, it's clunky as hell but back in the day, it was really something.

Growing up with the SNES, the Super FX chip and Star Fox in particular were so mind-blowing to see on the SNES that I have an irrational love for Super FX games. Stunt Race FX was one of my favorite games on the system and I still play it today. I never played Vortex back in the day but I bought a cart off of ebay and was surprised by how fun it is. I really don't have much to add about this game as you pretty much nailed it here. Younger gamers will probably won't want to be bothered with this game due to the way it plays and even SNES Star Fox fans might walk away a bit disappointed, but given that games of this kind are so few and far between on this era of hardware, I'm endlessly fascinated that it even exists at all and for me, there's nothing quite like the era of early 3D gaming. As rough as it is, that's part of its charm.

My brother and I got this used from Funcoland back in the day. Don't remember if either of us knew what it was, but we saw the SuperFX logo and must have figured it was good. Didn't flat out hate the game, but learning how to play it took a while. I don't think I ever got past the platforming part. Always gave up right around then. Hey, I don't expect you to see this or read it, but Neil Gaiman responded ti someone asking if it was ok to still see Movies. His response was basically, "Absolutely. Go see Barbie or Oppenhiemer. Those movies are done and finished. Not seeing them gives the Studios the ability to say they only made X amount, why should we pay you more. But if more people see them, then Strikers can point to how much it made and prove their worth." When dealing with TV, I would use the same logic especially since Sailor Moon is more Anime than Hollywood and South Park isn't airing new episodes right now (and probably won't until the strikes are over." I am not disagreeing with you, but sharing a different perspective. I enjoy your videos regardless of these kinds of outside factors.😊

This was a game that showed me that having technology isn't the end all and be all of making a great game. Star Fox could have easily been a game like this, but the Nintendo of the time knew how to make great games, they just didn't always have the technical know how. Vortex for me was a game I wanted to love, but it was just poorly made and conceived, and it just wasn't fun. And even Nintendo dropped the ball on occasion, as Stunt Race FX looked amazing, but was a poorly done game as well.

I remember this one from back when I was in high school. I only played it briefly- I can't remember whether it was a rental, or whether a friend loaned it to me, but it was apparent to me even then that the game was just WAY too damn hard because of its design flaws (most notably the clunky controls). I think the friend I may (or may not) have borrowed it from even told me that the game was actually literally unbeatable because of a bug that made one of the objectives completely impossible to complete, but he may have been mistaken (he was also a chronic liar, prone to making things up completely at random when it came to anime and video games). Anyway, I never played much of it and don't remember it that fondly, but it WAS memorable if nothing else.

As a PC gamer in 1994, the FX chip games on the SNES or similar games on the Genesis/Sega CD were cute but primitive. It wasn't until the next gen that 3D in consoles wasn't just a gimmick. If a game was unique and played to the console's action strengths it could be interesting, like Starfox. When games moved into the simulation territory of the PC they looked bad, often like Baby's First Simulator, even in an area like Giant Robots. 1994 had EarthSiege, for example, a Mech game that crushed this. Mechwarrior 2 was on the horizon (The first Mechwarrior from 1989 was getting old, but still had more gameplay). Ultrabots had been around for a year. It also compares poorly with absurdly good looking action oriented sims like Armored First (tank) or Comanche Maximum Overkill (helicopter). I appreciate that they were doing what they could, but I don't think it was a great idea.

With some refinement, this would've been a better game to show off the FX chip than Star Fox because Vortex is non-linear, 3D exploration, starting on the second level when you explore a planet. Star Fox, with its linear game play and being trapped in a continuous forward motion was more like a test to see if a game like F-zero could look more 3D with less detail in the objects to gain more scale of objects using fewer sprites. Does that make sense? Keeping the objects plain would've allowed mode 7 to scale sprites more, but without looking scaled, allowing more fluidity as it scales a sprite bigger, then transitions to the next larger version of the sprite but scaled down at first, then gradually bigger. Star Fox looked like a 3D gimmick compared to Vortex.

This game is one of my fav guilty pleasure games; in the sense of how you described it! I love aspects of it, it's clearly an evolution and step forward but it does have issues in terms of controls, frame rate and other weird quirks(1st person camera mode inside bases) Also a little thing you may not know, Hardshell mode can replenish your FUEL gauge, if you stop and let it sit there for a time it'll slowly recharge. In the manual for the game it does this by solar panels or something. And yeah I purchased this game on clearance when it was around in the SNES days. Vortex is a weird beast of a game that deserves a renewed look. FINALLY Classic Game Room's very lacking dumb review of this game is horrid lol.

Rough gameplay. Wonky controls. And of the 4 modes, I only like the aesthetic of 2. The Walker and Sonic Jet look cool. But everything about the Hard Shell is lame. And the Land Burner looks like it's backwards. Great music though. But that's not enough for me to like this game.

I wonder how difficult it would be to hack a ROM to use the FX2 chipset? It seems such things are possible, given the SA-1 optimization patches for games like Gradius III. Meanwhile, I'm heading to Zophar's to pick up the SPC. Awesome music.

I'd be curious to know if playing on the FXPAKPRO, or modifying some of the settings on it, makes a difference with frame rate or slow down.

Lol I wonder how many more "worth it's" there can be in the library left for ol snesdrunk for the SNES ... It would seem like we are reaching the bottom of the barrel on titles for the og -- Not saying the channel is running out of ideas just that eventually there can't be any more "HIDING GEMSTONES!" Edit: I do also like that besides all the flaws , our intrepid host still can't help but have some affinity for it. Based on his reasoning, I can't fault him for it either! 😂

Good review. You know, now that Drunk did a review, I predict a Vortex Improvement Patch to come out within a few months. 😋 I do recall seeing this game reviewed in magazines back in the day and it did look highly ambitious for an SNES game. Although, I did hear complaints about the game even way back when it was released. I figured this one had aged like milk as many very early 3D games just are hard to go back to now. Although, the original Star Fox is still a guilty pleasure of mine even though it is completely janky and the framerate is nauseating.

It's really a shame how after all the revolution Star Fox was back in the day nobody pick up the slack, and a Robot/spaceship game seems like a no-brainer. Even with all the complications of doing 3d back then it's kinda shocking that Star Fox was huge hit in the early years of the consoles and nobody followed it's lead, except for this and I think so really bad racing games. It took until the arrival of the next generation of consoles. But I wonder how a game like sequel to fzero would've been had it been power by the fx chip 1 or 2... Even the proper sequel star Fox 2 was cancelled 😔

Like most SNES games I played, I discovered this one in a mercadito (bazaar) in Mexico in 2000. At the time I had 12 years and the PS2 was about to be released, a neighbor had a dreamcast day one an we would play it often, but I always had an itch for the history of games and technology and this one was a big surprise for me, I noticed it was the same dev as star fox and enjoyed it for what it was, I knew it was clunky and hard to play but I still dug it, was the main character called general Dante or something? I remember that beign cool AF, but I could be making up this memory.

Recently picked up a copy of thos game for only $7 as it was a well remembered game from my childhood. The difficulty good lord is relentless though and its incredibly frustrating to play, but man the nostalgia. The soundtrack kicks major ass cheeks! Such an ambitious title that tried to do too much. I still never made it past i believe stage 3. I didnt even know it had platform jumping lol maybe I'll beat it this time around. I owe it to childhood me.
