After over 1300 comments, I thought I'd pin a "Frequent Comments" post up here. 1, "zelda is an RPG and ur stupid lol, u have illusion of gaia on here but not zelders??" Yes, in the most uselessly pedantic and strict definition of "role playing game," Link to the Past is an RPG. You're playing as a role, and that role is Link. However, under this definition, absolutely any game can be a role playing game. Even stuff like Bill Laimbeer's Combat Basketball. So, when it comes to video games, the context changes of how "role playing game" is used. You need to make the character grow, not just by items (like in LttP) but by getting stronger and learning new abilities, usually through experience points. Will in Illusion of Gaia and even Albert in Front Mission Gun Hazard utilize this. Their characters grow through combat. That's what make those games role playing games. Link is a static character. The only way Link gets stronger in LttP is by collecting a shitload of items, most of which are used to solve puzzles. (Or, in other words, what you do in a typical action-adventure game.) 2, "Chrono Trigger is better on DS and by your own rules, should not be on this video." I put 30something hours into the DS version, and the extra content is not worth exploring, and it's definitely not essential. I even prefer the original SNES translation. It's still best experienced on Super Nintendo. 3, "Where is [Bahamut Lagoon, Fire Emblem 4, Secret of Evermore, Dragon Quest, etc?]" Elsewhere.

It seems crazy to me that people don't like to think of Zelda as an RPG, when it was clearly designed to be one. Nintendo may have handled character progression in a non-traditional and streamlined manner, but that doesn't change the fact that Link permanently gains access to new abilities, more HP, and attack damage, making him stronger. Experience points aren't essential to RPGs, Brogue for example doesn't feature them, and many RPGs that do often link them to other gameplay elements besides combat, such as puzzles.

I agree the DS extra content isn't necessary, but I really do love the new translation.

I'm so happy that you included Lufia 2 on the list. That game holds a special place in my heart as it was the first game I bought with my own money back when I was in elementary school. I wouldn't spend all of my pocket money for lunch just to save for this game, and when I finally had the whole $30 in cents and dollars, I remember going to the electronic store with my parents with a pouch bulging with coins, I was a bit embarrassed because the cashier had to count it all out...it was worth it though, such a good game, and that boss theme song, hearing it again gave me the goosebumps!! This was also during a time when we didn't have the luxury of online reviews, sure there were gaming mags but I couldn't find any that reviewed Lufia 2, I bought it simply because the screenshots on the back looked good, boy did I strike it lucky!

That and Breath of Fire 2 are series that I wish could have kept going on longer than they did. I have been playing WoW since the original alpha, and I think I have more time spent between BoF 2 and Lufia 2 than I do in almost 20 years as a hardcore raider in WoW. That's how great those games were.

Same. Just bought it because it looked good. Some of the puzzles made me a little nuts, and there weren't gaming sites to help out back then. I feel like Crono Tigger is the most edited down JRPG of all time and that's part of why it's the best, ever. Every member of the cast feels necessary. Every item feels necessary. Every location, boss and story element feels necessary. Nothing in Chrono Trigger feels repeated, unimportant, or uninteresting. It's just VERY streamlined and absolutely the game you should hand someone to say "this is a JRPG" or "This is the Super Nintendo." It's an iconic game.

I am pretty new to the retro gaming scene. I completed Metroid and I've completed Super Metroid twice, and I was looking for something new. Something my dad, who grew up playing the NES and Genesis, never got into. RPGs. I heard Chrono Trigger's music a long long time ago on KZbin, but I decided to try it out a few months ago. I played a tiny bit of it, not expecting to get anywhere really, but it blew my mind. I haven't ever played anything as fun or as intriguing as Chrono Trigger. Fast forward two months, and I have 2 out of 13 endings completed, and I have to say I've never been happier. After I complete all the endings, I'm glad you gave me inspiration for what to play next!

Hautaka as someone who loves this game more than anything in life, your words brings genuine warmth to my heart. Chrono Trigger is the best game ever made, and in my opinion the greatest work of art to ever exist. I literally have beaten that game HUNDREDS of times. I have the original for SNES, the psX port, the DS “remake”, on my Wii from the Nintendo Store, and on my iPhone. I play it mostly on my phone and SNES. Oh and I have it on my emulator on both my laptop and PC. The music, characters and story are unmatched by any game out there. It’s just simply incredible. Play Chrono Cross for PS1 and then play the fan mod Chrono Trigger: Flames of Eternity
@joj37355 жыл бұрын
@@christophermurray9192 Thank you! I'm hesitant on Chrono Cross because as far as I am aware it doesn't feel anything like Trigger, but I might as well give it a shot. @christophermurray91925 жыл бұрын
Hautaka Chrono Cross doesn’t feel like Trigger until the end of disc 1 but even then it’s still nothing compared to its predecessor. Cross would have been better off as a stand alone game but if you play the DS remake or iPhone port there is a new last boss and it’s the same as the final boss from cross, bringing everything full circle. I highly recommend playing everything. Play Breath of Fire, all of them. Play Grandia 2, you can get it for Dreamcast. There’s also a laggy shitty PS2 port. I believe there’s also a collection that recently came out for PC or is soon. Final Fantasy 7. Just play it if you haven’t already. Legend of Legaia. Both of them are great RPGs with a unique combat system that’s a lot of fun. Those are some of my favorites.
@Jack_805 жыл бұрын
cross is a really good game but the combat system is so boring compared to trigger. i was expecting a similar combat style with more depth but it was much more simple and bland to me.

Great list! I'm 40 and the highlight of my childhood was renting each of these games and trying to beat them within one weekend with my friend, staying up all night on Friday and Saturday and trying to complete them by 6pm when they had to be returned to the rental store. I think your list is extremely accurate and regret not appreciating Earthbound and Chrono Trigger as much as I should have at the time. My issue with FF6 was that you'd level up your guys but then they'd leave indefinitely so you'd never know if you were going to have them again or if you did, if they'd come back stronger and all your time with them previously was wasted. Otherwise a very top RPG for the console and deserving of a top slot. I think my favorite game, that combined the best elements of all the aforementioned, never existed.

Lufia 2 is probably my 2nd favorite RPG of all time. The Ancient Cave was so rewarding. The comedy from Dekar was always something to be waiting on. Tia's story line really pulled at the heart strings. I hate to say it but I just couldn't get into FFVI but I might revisit it. FFIV is my all time favorite, but that may be that it was one of the very few games I had the luxury of owning as a youngster besides Mario Kart and Killer Instinct. Mom relied heavily on the 99 cent Tuesdays at the rental place, and let's face it, if you were around during rental times as a kid when it was at its height, you likely got disappointed when they didn't have the game in stock you were looking for. I would convince my mom to let me keep Lufia 2 until the following Tuesday and pay off the debt by doing a lot of housework since the store only had one copy. Now i sit here with some odd 380 games installed on my Xbox and still love going back and playing the classics. Edit: I really enjoyed the video by the way.

and to anyone who says that Secret of mana has bad hit detection, i like to say they dont know how to properly play it and certain weapons at certain orb lvls react differently to different enemy variables, now speaking of bad hit detection, secret of Evermore DOES indeed has that issue where everything detects really really bad. this wasnt a stab at you brother but i do encourage you to try different weapons on the tough skinned monsters and ct ect, youl see what i mean, the battle system on SOM is utterly decades ahead of its time with all the math and percentages, id even call it a precursor to skyrim with the weapon enchantments!

Couldn't agree more. SD2 isn't as flawed as they describe. Even the scrolling. It's meant to mimic running and being surprise attacked

13) The first thing that comes to mind on this title is "that damned mushroom mountain maze". The game itself is amazing, and makes you think, but I have so much hatred for that confusing mushroom maze that... ugh, I hate it so much because everywhere looks the damned same... Gaia is a really solid game, all on its own- I love getting to watch the character development- Kara going from spoiled princess to actual human, your best friend Lance traveling the world, then making the decision to settle down with his newfound love and take care of his ailing father before the end of it... even some of the bosses get character development, when you realize that the reason they were doing what they were doing was to keep the Spirit Statues safe and in place so you could come find them. Also, I love the fact that each dungeon has its own gimmick- Larai's puzzle solving, flipping to the back of the Sky Garden, the water level puzzles in Mu... 12) Rented this once, have been looking for a copy of it for-freaking-ever. Quintet may not have been a big company, but they put out some pretty decent games back in the day. I liked this one a bit less than Gaia, mostly because I never got the chance to really get into the story that deeply. 11) Beat the absolute crap out of this when it was only on SNES, got the remake and went all through it again. I wish they'd dig up the notes on the stuff that got cut for the expanded version and give that to us- either as a new game or just DLC for the existing one, because the first three-quarters of the game is amazing- but after the sixth palace, things just get rushed and rushed until the end. The Moon Palace and Tasnica really, really could have been expanded upon instead of just being "go here, do one thing than you're off again" places. 10) My kingdom for a version of this with a better freaking script! I mean, I love the game, it's still pretty balanced, but that script... ugh, if Capcom wanted to make some extra $, they'd release a damned script patch because the 'official' one is hot freaking garbage full of Engrish and terrible, terrible translations. With a cleaned-up script? It's top 5, easy. They nerfed the dragon powers that let you cheese most of the first game, and instead made you actually have to face things. 9) Never even knew of this one, but I hope it ends up dragged across someday. 8) I never got to play this one, either. Used copies of this got for insane amounts, last I checked. 7) This is one I'm looking forward to getting my teeth into, easily. Mana was one of my go-to favorite RPGs on the SNES. 6) This is actually a prequel to the first game, surprisingly. I've only played the first one, but that's pretty good. 5) ...of course we'd never get something like this over here, not with our obsession with bambamshootmans games and hatred of anything with a damned story... it looks pretty amazing, though. It's giving me the same kind of vibes Xenogears does. 4) Dear Nintendo: If you like money, a remake of this would bring you mountains of it. Yes, I'm serious- it's a solid game that still holds up today. 3) Very nice! I was hoping this would be on here. Earthbound was just ahead of its time- it got some pretty mediocre reviews in most of the big gaming mags that weren't Nintendo Power (who devoted a lot of pages to it, as well as that infamous "This game stinks" ad campaign with the scratch-and-sniff cards. It's one of the best and deepest RPGs on the system- especially if you just think that the sequel (Mother 3) is in another timeline from this one (Porky, in the ending, mentions he's going to go to another timeline to work on his next plan- it's obvious that he hand-picked another timeline that was more favorable to his plans, one where Ness and friends either couldn't stop Giygas or didn't make it back afterwards. 2) This one... yeah, it deserves an HD remake, but how many years would be needed to do this game justice? Mountains of great characters (plus Gau and Umaro, who nobody uses), a long, long story that doesn't back off, and finally, character stories and development out the wazoo. You don't have to find everything or everyone to attempt the final tower- that's the thing about this game- you can hit Kefka's Tower with as few as 4 or as many as 14 characters. Celes, Sabin, Edgar and Setzer are your only required party members, everyone else is optional and can be recovered in any order, if at all. 1) I can already hear the slapfights starting. I'd have to say I agree with you. It was just easier to get into the story with CT than FF6, even if there was more meat to be had in FF6. I actually kind of liked the extra stuff in the rereleases (though this game had, what, three? Four? Maybe five or six?)- even if it was only to more firmly tie the game to the clusterfudge that was its "sequel", Chrono Cross (or "Square's epic failure at making a Suikoden clone", if you prefer).

The only problem I have with Super Mario RPG is that since already beating it twice, I haven't been able to get myself to play through it again. After knowing where everything is, it just feels too easy to beat. Knowing how to hit a perfect hit(and that you can essentially make enemies do 0 damage to you in a lot of occasions) makes the game less challenging, knowing where all the goodies are does as well, and then there's all the secret items. I wish they could make a sequel honestly, but still make it as good as the original, and maybe tone down the strengths of timed hits.
