I'm a ba'al teshuvah, 65 year old Bostonian and I love your videos Frieda! There is more to the story than which hecture one may prefer. The candy you bought in Borough Park are Chalav Yisrael. This refers to kosher milk whose milking was observed by an observant Jew. The halakha of chalav Yisrael, which originates in the Mishnah and Talmud, was instituted to ensure that no non-Jew would mix milk of a non-kosher animal with the kosher milk. Chabad for example, will only use cholav yisrael dairy. My two sons, who are both more observant than me, will only eat cholav yisrael dairy products. We want them to eat in our home, so we also use cholav yisrael. It's a bit more expensive, but definitely worth it to have our kids and their families eat here!

All chasidim use only Cholov Yisroel Litvish outside of Israel do not look for a clean shaven face outside of Israel be assured it is not Cholov Yisroel!!! In Israel other than chocolate bars most dairy products are Cholov Yisroel but it will not say Cholov Yisroel it will say Mehadrin same with meat you will not see the word Glatt on poultry or meat it will say Mehadrin.

Hechsher symbols at 1:53. I worked at a food processing plant where all 135 food products had the Hechsher symbol for rabbinical approval. There were two inspectors who came regularly at night to certify there was no meat or dairy used in the products. The cleanliness of the factory was also inspected. You could eat your lunch off the factory floor and machinery since everything was kept clean and sterilized each day. As a result I would say food having the Hechsher symbol means it comes from a good source and can be trusted.

I like buying kosher products because of the rabbinical supervision and the cleanliness of the preparation process. Plus, the meat tastes better! I would always buy a kosher chicken over one from a supermarket. I was not aware of the wide variety of kosher candy-my Jewish friends primarily lamented that Oreos were not kosher when they were growing up, so they had Hydrox instead.

Interesting, so I'm not completely crazy for thinking kosher foods with "the fancy thing" which I now know is a Hechsher are higher quality and not just something to do with dietary restrictions. Of course I'm not getting things like candy bars, but the variety of stuff you can find with shorter ingredient labels, plus the emphasis on cleanliness - good enough for me to pay a small amount more.

Another winner, Frieda. Yes probably the community is being charged more for the extra service being given. The Rabbi’s are paid for their work, ensuring the candy is, Kosher!
@jenniferlynn3537 Жыл бұрын
That’s not really the reason for the greater cost of the “knock off” candies. Huge chocolate manufacturers like Hershey’s and Mars are able to purchase the commodities in far greater quantities - so the ingredients cost less per pound. They have huge contracts with dairies - and greater negotiating power with them as to what they pay. Their plants are automated - reducing the price these companies pay for labor to manufacture the items. Even where both the original and the knock off version have kosher certification, there are greater amounts of ingredients being reviewed each time the team of Rabbi visit. Overall, the specialized, knock-off kosher candy is a better buy for the cost to create it - because there are no advertising expenses - and the distribution is either direct to the vendors or handled by community members.

Israel has its own great candies that you usually find in Israel only or at Israeli- or Jewish-owned shops in places like NYC, but Israeli chocolate candies like "Milky" aren't knockoffs of something like "Milky Way" and Israel has its own chocolates and candies that are well-beloved junk food in Israel (example, the "Elite" "cow chocolate" bar, "Pesek Zman" (Time Out); then there are licensed versions of American candies that you can get in Israel as well, such as "Kit Kat" but these aren't knockoffs either, although I guess "Kif Kef" is an Israeli version of the Kit Kats we have in America, but I think it's licensed. The deal here is that these arecifically American Jewish lknockoff junk foods produced by and marketed to the ultra-Orthodox Jewish communities in America. Even though a lot of the beloved junk food like Snickers, Milky Way, and Twix are kosher-supervised, they are usually marked "OU-D" meaning that the Union of Orthodox Rabbis has ruled them kosher but they contain dairy. That is good enough for most Modern Orthodox American Jews who keep a kosher diet but the ultra-Orthodox/hassidic/haredi communities hold a higher standard when it comes to foods containing dairy products, they demand that it be "Cholov Yisroel", meaning "milk of Israel" -- that doesn't mean the milk comes form Israel but they demand that all dairy products be under constant supervision by a religious Jew from the milking to when it is added to the product; this is an extremely stringent standard that they insist upon that even many other Orthodox Jews don't. The late Rabbi Moshe Feinstein, a highly regarded authority among all Orthodox Jews ruled that the US Dept of Agriculture and FDA are to be trusted when they determine that a dairy product comes from a kosher animal like a cow or a goat, nevertheless most of the very ultra-Orthodox want to make sure that it doesn't have any non kosher milk like pig milk mixed in, for instance, so they demand that it be constantly supervised. All the "OU-D" marked foods were "good enough" in my family and among my Modern Orthodox peers, but not good enough for haredi Jews.

Most European chocolate is manufactured under very strict rules; this is why Swiss chocolate or Belgian chocolate is so much better than American chocolate, which is not regulated to the same standard. Even brands made in the US, such as Twix or other chocolates, are not exported to Canada-their chocolate candy, even under the same US name, is manufactured in Europe. Which is why Canadian chocolate is so much better than American chocolate. Japanese Twix are very interesting, they come in so many different flavors, like strawberry and blood orange, many covered in white chocolate. They are delicious, but difficult to find outside Japan unless you have a Japanese grocery nearby or can find them online.

About the world of Kosher: There is a lot that goes into our food that we don't know about and there is a lot going on in production that we don't know about. In order to certify an item as kosher, ALL that information needs to be available. Kosher supervisors fly around the world visiting plants constantly . The big agencies share all this information with each other. Once the facts are on the table, their status must be determined. For that one must be an expert in the laws of Kosher. One agency might decide to rely on a more lenient opinion in order to make more kosher food available to the world whereas others might opt to follow or more strict opinion. When it comes to milk there are 2 issues. The basic one is that it must be coming from a kosher animal. In the US all the big milk plants only produce milk from kosher animals. Since there are laws to make sure no other milk can get mixed in, there is an opinion that one may rely on that and that when there is no other option it's ok to drink it without worrying it's jorse milk. The second issue is that drinking milk that wasn't supervised by a Jew can cause the soul to fog up. Doubts in the existense of Gd might creep up as a result of it. Since this is an issue of a spiritual nature, no government oversight or closed circuit camera system can do away with it. Hence the very strict adherence to chalav yisrael and no OU - D

Yeah, it's a shame - lots of their stuff is so good.

@@FriedaVizelBrooklyn On the other hand- it's good for the local economy. if someone is already spending more on Kosher food- why not buy from local companies instead of a giant Israeli Conglomerate?

Now I'm hungry for a Milky Way or a Snickers! I assume the kosher candy is high priced because it is produced under stricter standards too.

I like the outfit. Bought some similar looking pants in a different color and your outfit gave me a style idea. Sorry my comment isn’t about candy

With Frieda holding the known brand chocolates in her hand for so long arent they melting/melted?
@FriedaVizelBrooklyn5 ай бұрын
Yes, the experiment wasn't 1000% scientific, but the weather was gorgeous that day so not exactly melting climate!

Im a new subscriber! As I wait for a kidney transplant I watch loads of KZbin and B'H I FOUND YOU! I must say...loving your vibe, humor, honesty and your style! Your style is feminine and modest with continuing to be your own self...how wonderfully refreshing! One of my favorite kosher/Israeli snacks are "BAM-BAMS"... basically peanut butter Cheetos! A video doing a comparison of such snacks would be super fun (& yummy for you 😊)! Im so excited to view your other videos!❤😊

Love, I wish you much health and healing and lots of bam-bams, which I absolutely love too. Many of my siblings first had bam-bams as their first solid food, which maybe now wouldn't fly because peanuts are becoming such a no-fly zone with kids! Wishing you a speedy and wonderful recovery!!

Snickers fan here - Thank you, great video, as usual! Just curious, why have you suspended your tours to Boro Park?
@FriedaVizelBrooklyn Жыл бұрын
Because I find Williamsburg more interesting and enjoyable to be in. I'm in Boro Park a lot; I just prefer the story and history of Williamsburg. After teh pandemic when I was closed for two years, I learned to pick my work for what I loved the most.

Now I want to try kosher chocolate bars. 🍫Fortunately there are a few kosher groceries here. So far I have tasted milk, butter and yogurt and they come from the US. I'm in Canada. So I'm not going to compare prices. That was fun! Thank you! I ❤ your videos.
@beans4853 Жыл бұрын
Fun fact, alot of kosher factories are in Canada! However, the Canadians still get it last because they distribute it in the US and then ship it back to the Canadian grocery stores (for double the price). My husband is Canadian and they always had hardened candies ad white speckled chocolate

I didn't know snickers was officially certified kosher lol😮
@maril1379 Жыл бұрын
My understandung is that OU is certified by a Modern Orthodox group so that is why Hasidim would not accept. Different groups use different kosher certifications includingCholov Yisroel.

As a chasid, we actually consider ou to be the most stringent in their supervision and surprise visits. However, they have different customs than us regarding what is permissible. Therefore, we only eat certain foods/drinks with only an ou. However, if something has an ou and another hechsher that is chasidic, that's the best. We know it doesn't have anything questionable, only the perks of both
