It was the one thing that annoyed me about Star Trek; "Dangerous Mission? Better send the command staff on it!" Why not go SG-1 and get their own team, it's why I'd like the Elite Force games as a teen.

Not...too bad, considering the time. Eh, who am I kidding? Unreal Tournament handled better, and it released four years before this one. And Epic released UT2k3 even before this, which was an incredible improvement.

It is a shame that the first Elite Force doesn't run on modern machines. I really enjoyed playing that game back in 2000.

Quake 3? Quake... QUAKE 3!?!?
@williamtimonen68148 жыл бұрын
That has to be a joke, right?
@SnipeandWib8 жыл бұрын
I'm afraid it's not. It's built on the same engine as Quake 3, sure, but I couldn't explain why changing the .exe's name should affect framerate. But hey, at least it's a fixable problem!
@williamtimonen68148 жыл бұрын
But still. Who would do that? Is it just someone that likes Quake 3 so much that they write it in all their games or something?

I actually might be able to answer this! Hidden deep in Windows, there is an XML file that has a long list of applications listed in it. These applications have been found by testers on Windows to not "play well" with the current version of Windows, and so sometimes small "shims" are applied to them. These are often as simple as a version lie to the application to tell it that the version of Windows you are using is valid, but sometimes it does more than that, such as "When this application is launched, apply X hardware rendering to it instead of Y" because the application is so old, the modern rendering breaks it. These shims remain in place until either the software gets patched, or sometimes as legacy data from Windows build to Windows build. So, my guess is that at one point, someone added Quake 3 to the XML list and told it to apply a different rendering method (probably telling it to used D3D instead of OpenGL or something). Now USUALLY, when an app is added to the list, it is accompanied by some very specific targeting, such as executable creation dates, version numbers, sometimes even the CHECKSUM ID. This is to make sure that something as simple as renaming an executable doesn't apply the incorrect shim. In fact, pure name targeting is probably the weakest method possible. So, in this case, my guess is someone was sloppy, and used a loose target. Changing the name may very well trigger the shims intended for Quake 3, and it just so happens its the same shims that make this game work, probably owing to the fact they use the same engine. Now, this is somewhat speculative, but I could also totally see this being the reason it works. I guess one way to test it is to take another app, label it 'quake3.exe' and see what happens to it. Source: I wrote a lot of these shims.

I wonder if the people decrying the Picard show know about Monroe? They keep going on abot how "un-Star Trek" it is and that Kurzmen is Satan for including minor things like swearing (I could do without but I'm not that bothered) or the organic vs synthetic plot. I've only seen bits of it admittedly. Since TV shows these days just look the same to me. Same lighting, same wannabe movie, presentation. EC Henry has a point though- how they implement technology is very lazy, and inconsistent. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eKSnZKRrf7Gcmpo&t
