I went back to Pilates just over 2 years go. I had done a lot of work with a physiotherapist one on one about 15 years ago, reformer 'classes' were only 2-3 on a reformer at a time, we were all supervised. There was no pumping music and we paid attention to the detail. It was a bit $ but covered by private health insurance ( in my country) so worth it. I continued to do Pilates floor exs. and yoga at home on my own. Fast forward 15 or so years…A Pilates studio opened in my block. I went. I was aghast. There was a huge room full of reformers, a girl shouting instructions over pumping music and no one asked me anything about whether I had injuries etc. It was hell for me. Really related to that video from SNL. What had happened to the 'real' Pilates? BUT I am grateful for that new 'modern' pilates studio because I went straight out and bought my own reformer for home. Doing Melanie’s videos and other good instructors out there, PEACE. Thank you Melanie for keeping it REAL.

Thanks Laura 💜 It's an interesting conversation for sure. I think it's a two-parter, looking at 1) the content of what people are teaching as Pilates, and 2) the culture/environment in which it's being taught. I'm generally not out to dog on any kind of movement that people enjoy doing and will show up for, but there's a lot of interesting discourse online about what people classify as Pilates. Is it the original exercises and order that Joe originally taught and that alone? Is it any exercise on a machine that looks similar to what Joe Pilates created? Is it anything that follows the general Pilates principles? I think it's an interesting exercise to think of Pilates as being on a spectrum from classical to megaformer, etc. My jam is definitely somewhere closer to the center (probably because I need some structure but I don't like being told what to do, lol). As for the experience, I think it's about whether the culture of the studio is focused on having clients' attention focused more inward on what is happening within their bodies, or external at the environment/communal experience. So much to think about when really, it's just exercise 😆

I watched this video last night and laughed all the way through. I used to do Pure Barre at the studio where my daughter taught. We only went to support her but I did like the workouts. There was definitely a club vibe and younger clientele there. I know the corporate company also branded and created Club Pilates and I imagine those places may have more of a club vibe. As a reformer teacher, at a recreation center, we have low lights but my clientele is the norm there... 30s to 80s, men, women, some able, some with both knee and hips replaced. I'm happy to say no one there without underwear, thank goodness.

@MelanieLopezPilates You validated the depiction of certain pilates studios, making the skit 80% documentary, 20% parody. I especially enjoyed your reactions to the archetypes among the studio clients as reasonably valid and how you tried to draw a distinction between 1lb and 3lb hand weights. Wow.
