Great video. You taught me something today. I don’t usually cut left hand threads but every now and then a job comes in that requires it. I use to have the threads turned for me but now I’m going to do them myself. Thanks

I really appreciate that you show things as they are, i.e. very hard metal that doesn't behave well. I just started to do lathe work and learning to thread something has been a bear. I see I need to be more patient. How much of a cut do you take per pass? Is there a rule of thumb?

Because the blade bolt was left hand thread and the blade grass lifts were for a left side discharge deck this mower must be a pull behind or belly finish mower for a small farm type tractor? Most small engine lawn mowers are generally right hand discharge as small engines with vertical shafts generally rotate clockwise when viewed from the flywheel side. What I reckon I'm getting at is that a good farm equipment mechanic or an experienced small engine guy could have seen those blades and known the spindle bolt was LH thread.

I wonder how successful your left hand thread turned out, as you did not mention in the set up the need to change the toolholder shim. When cutting a left hand thread it is necessary to change the shim for a negative shim or the helical angle will be incorrect. It causes a lot of confusion in industry that toolholder can be left or right hand approach but needs a different set up to cut a left hand thread.Having retired after 37 years in the tool supply industry, I was spending as much time explaining this at the end as I did at the beginning.Have a look on any of the major carbide manufacturers under threading and they will show a graph of which shim set up you should be using.

Just watched this, and have to say, if you were working for any of my local engineering companies you would be shown the door for cutting a left hand thread wth a right hand tool bit as you have done here. Right hand tool bits are designed to cut to the left, and left hand tool bits are designed to cut to the right. The tool tips have different lead face relief angles, clearlyt visible if yo look at the tool insert tip through a compariror or good magnifying glass.
