Yet people still take the piss. Photos, jokes, following us, yelling at us, I’ve never seen anything like it towards myself, and if these skinny short men feel comfortable throwing insults at my partner who looks like they could easily beat them all up I fear what could happen to me if I looked that way too. Only halfway through this video, but I remember watching this as a young woman when it was being aired on British TV and it seriously fed into the most distorted perception of myself and encouraged me to partake in destructive tendencies in order to attain the unattainable beauty standards set for women - ED's included. I can't begin to remark how damn refreshing it is to see someone like Cam feeling the same outrage watching this back as I do, especially in regards to the scathing comments made by male members of the public about the appearance of these already beautiful and oftentimes unique women, especially when they're no oil painting themselves and are likely commenting on a girl HALF THEIR AGE that they wouldn't even dare to approach even if it wasn't an arresting offence. Thank you, Cam, for the great content as always, and for highlighting this show as the toxic, patriarchal criticism of powerful, independent women that it always has been. I commented weeks ago about binging the channel whilst on bedrest when pregnant with my first child. Now, I am watching this with my newborn daughter, and I am happy that there are people in this world, men too, that see through this kind of misogynistic spiel. It makes me glad that my own daughter is growing up in a more evolved and morally advanced society where we can view this kind of content as being insidiously damaging to women whilst being portrayed as 'empowering'.

As a goth with many piercings, I used to experience a lot of verbal abuse and stares from others. However, I realized that it was more about body language. When I stopped slouching, started walking with my head up, a smile on my face, and greeted other people, even if they didn't greet me first, I found that people were more open to talking. I received fewer random verbal abuses and instead heard people say things like "I like goth, it's cool" and received compliments on my piercings. It's all about body language. When you present yourself as unapproachable, you invite negativity, but when you give off an approachable energy, people seem to be fine with you.

As someone with a decent amount of piercings and an alternative look similar to the gothic couple. Yes, people absolutely stare at you. Some people give really positive reactions though- Those stick with me way longer!

I don't have all my piercings in anymore - even though I realistically haven't had loads (nerve pain & sensory issues meant I took quite a few out bc my body suddenly decided it couldn't stand certain ones anymore, even though they'd healed & I'd stopped noticing them 🙃. Been slowly getting more again/tapering old ones now I've got more of a handle on that 😅)... But people would stare at my vertical labret and my septum in particular 😳. I tend to wear gold & opal/clear gem jewellery bc I like it and it suits my skin tone so it wasn't as easily noticed on me as silver, but I would still notice people staring at times, and some even telling me I'd "ruined my face" 💀. Its like... did I ask for your opinion??? 🤔 my last piercing was my other nostril and now I'm wanting to add some more to get a constellation type thing going on (space permitting 😅) - and with every piercing certain people notice it's the same damn thing about putting holes in my face & ruining it... at this point I just tell them I've never truly regretted a piercing, even the ones I've taken out and have "holes" leftover, besides which, it's _my_ face to ruin if they think that way 🤷🏼♀️. Same with my gauged ears... even though I only got to 5mm before I lost the jewellery (going to get back on it and get up to 10mm ish though soon) - despite the fact that I literally can't wear normal earrings 99% of the time, let alone my beloved witchy dangling ones - which are only possible for me to wear through tunnels 🙄. My aesthetic isn't really like the gothic couple, but it's definitely more alt/gothic leaning in some ways, I love all black outfits as much as I love my brightly coloured and patterned stuff, and I always try have flame coloured hair... I just don't feel myself in loads of makeup nowadays and need to be comfy & not feel too heavy... I guess my style is post‐emo/scene kid who grew up to become outdoorsy & fell in love with warm tones 🤣. Either way, I only ever take a proper look at someone with your style because I'm admiring the body mods & outfit... but I reckon the double nostril piercings, orange hair, and bit of spooky/edginess tip you off to us being kindred spirits haha 😅

I personally think if they're not hurting anyone, it really shouldn't matter, but if it's something like they do to feel the need to impress people? As someone with a face full of piercings, I can tell you that almost every single person you walk past will laugh, or make some sort of degrading comment- To be fair though, since I have been working in retail and people have to have a conversation with me before judging me straight off the bat, most will tell me that I have got a really friendly face, or a lot are "fascinated" which can be a bit uncomforting but I can appreciate that people aren't used to seeing it. On the contrary, I have had all sorts of rubbish hurled at me just when I'm walking to the shop or work, this could be anything from plastic bottles, to the chicken bones people have finished eating- Adults and children can either be as evil or as lovely as the other and there isn't really any in-between. I'm kind of very much over it all now, and I'm so used to it that I mostly just laugh in response to the childish behaviour as there's nothing I can do about someone's entitled opinions. And I also just wanted to say a BIG THANK YOU Cam, because I think we need more people with such a normalised view on being unique or different to typical "societal norms". Great video, keep up the beautiful work. :)

I remember this came out at a time were Heat would do regular segments of paparazzi pictures of celebrities without makeup that were not particularly flattering. I would come to look at such pictures with a “yeah they’re human and look like most do in the morning” and I still do. Really interesting looking at your perception of this show. For those that dont know, this was aired at around the time the pubs were emptying, so you were supposed to be drunk and just in from a night out when watching it. The idea was not to 'correct' interesting looking people or tell them to care what other people thought, it was all about first impressions because people used to go out a lot more back then. They revisited quite a few of them to see what they chose to do long term, and very few chose to stay ordinary for any length of time. It is hard to understand post social media that people used to directly interact a lot more than they do now, and they cared a lot less about other people's opinions.

5:07 i have 10 face piercings. i generally get more compliments on them than negative comments !! i think in this generation, alternative styles have become much popular/trendy and accepted. i get people of all ages complementing them, it’s pretty cool to hear !!

man.. this is SUCH a deep topic... but i largely agree with what you've said about this british tv show. I'm glad that we are increasingly living in times where people are feeling more and more capable of expressing their uniqueness thru their fashion regardless of what other people say. I personally love seeing all the different ways that people express themselves thru fashion, etc., even when it's something i wouldn't wear myself. But I am always curious about the mental states that create some people's fashion statements. sometimes, people dress certain ways because they feel unworthy or inadequate in some way, and this is the thing that i hope we get better at acknowledging as a species. Wear what you want becuase it's fun and let's you express yourself, but maybe also consider WHY you want to wear certain things. if you find that your fashion is an overcompensation of an aspect of your life where you feel deficient.. maybe that's a place that you can work on things for urself. we are ALL worthy and deserving of all the things we want in Life. Including Love and Acceptance. Anyway, just my two cents. thank you for this video. Sending 💖

Yes.. what you said is true.. But I think generally if someone just looks at something and thinks "that looks nice" that's their gut decision And who is the best judge of that? Apart from the individual themselves!

Love this video and love ur takes sm, so so refreshing! in response to u asking about the goths and do people actually stare? yes. they absolutely do. my mum is a goth with some facial peircings and the amount of comments and judgemental looks she gets is wild. when i was like 10 we were out and someone shouted at her "its not Halloween yet!". she was Christmas shopping one year and as she was at the till waiting with a full trolley, the women in front of her hid their bags as if to insinuate that my mum would rob them. when i was very little she even had the social work called on her because people thought her being goth was mentally damaging to me (7 at the time) and my brother (15 at the time). So again, thank you cam for being so kind in this video. Legitamatly, if someones look doesn't actually affect you, why do u care? Another banger cam k vid 😎

You are funny! Subscribed. Gotta say though, I was addicted to that show and the specific example you chose was Soooooo not the typical! I like people that raise some conservative eyebrows but most on this show were serious fashion car crashes. Total wtfs!

Every video I watch of yours increases my respect for you. You are absolutely spot on in everything you said!! You also make a valid point, our generation had this influencing us, so is it any wonder there's so many issues with confidence, own appearance etc. I hope they never make a show like this again!!!

Yep, this is probably one of the big reasons you're unhappy if you're around his age. Coz snog marry avoid damaged you by telling you that you require external validation to be happy and fulfilled. Late night BBC 3 smashed our beauty standards. Nailed it bro, nailed it.

I dont have a lot of peircings but I do love wearing darker colours and I don't dye my hair so my natural hair colour doesn't match that profile that most associate with people who wear dark colors so I do get weird glances at times

As a goth over here with lots of peircings, yeah I get stares, shouted at, being followed, being recorded, all sorts, it’s like being in a zoo but that doesn’t mean I’m gonna stop dressing how I want too 🖐️

as someone who’s goth and has piercings, people absolutely do stare, people bark, yell and walk across the road
