Timothy Treadwell (born Timothy William Dexter; April 29, 1957 - October 5, 2003) was an American bear enthusiast, environmentalist, documentary filmmaker, and founder of the bear-protection organization Grizzly People. He lived among coastal brown bears or grizzlies (Ursus arctos) in Katmai National Park, Alaska for 13 summers. On October 5, 2003, Treadwell and his girlfriend Amie Huguenard were killed and almost fully eaten by a 28-year-old male bear, named "The Machine", whose stomach was later found to contain human remains and clothing.

Yes he was delusional. His biggest flaw that I saw from one watching was he was grandiose. He thought he could control the bears. I want to know how I can learn more about this great story. And the other two questions were how did younkearn about this, and what did they live on. Tim was delusional and I wonder was he at all mal -nourished? He spoke if having list a lot if weight. This could have added to his weakening mental condition. He is believing things that are not accurate. I'm so sorry. RIP to him and his girlfriend.

I saw the documentary "Grizzly Man" a few times. Werner Hurtzog did an excellent docu on Tim Treadwell. Tim managed to survive 13 summers in the Grizzly Maze, which was a miracle in itself. He was really a good film maker, and brave, but a bit too obnoxious and delusional. Its a shame, he and Amy were horribly killed, but knew how dangerous it was, especially that time of year. Amy should have stayed home. RIP Tim And Amy. 😔🙏 + bears.🐻🐻

It's an even worse shame that he and his girlfriend had the end that they did. I love nature. I love hiking and spending time in the deep woods. But I e been my entire life not seeing a bear up close, and I'm totally fine with it staying that way!

Too bad it ended this way for the people and bears. I’ve only read of one other attack but I think she survived. It was a female ranger. She was walking and inadvertently crossed between mama bear and cubs. It attacked biting off her arm and other injuries. It stopped and when she thought it was safe used her good arm to reach for her radio. The bear attacked again. As for this young man, I’m of mixed emotions. It’s admirable he wanted to protect the bears but he didn’t protect himself or his girlfriend. In general, humans usurp space and authority over others. We need to be more cognizant of scooting aside so there is room on a bench for another. He really was an interloper in the bear’s habitat.

I was in the mountains with a friend and my sister many years ago. My sister stayed in the cabin one morning while my friend and I went to explore the area. It didn't take long before we came upon a bear, a huge bear! My fight or flight DNA and impulse immediately kicked in and I chose run! I ran back towards the cabin, looking back to ensure my friend was behind me. My friend wasn't as quick on the flight, she slowly backed up and then ran when the bear went on two legs and landed back on all four with the loudest grunt. For whatever reason, that bear didn't chase us. We were simply lucky. It wasn't until we were in the safety of the cabin that I realized how my fear completely took over my ability to feel "empathy" and I abandoned my friend in that moment. I felt horrible. She said she would have done the same thing. We were young, 16. I think if I were her, and saw him being mauled, I would have left him. I would have realized the fact that a frying plan is no match for a hungry grizzly bear. At least she might have had a chance, especially knowing that she would soon been rescued. Who knows what we would do in that situation. I only know of other stories where both people died, trying to rescue the other. He was careless. Yes bear spray is painful, but the bear will get over it. Having none, well who is going to feel the pain. This speaks volumes about his narcissistic tendency. I truly believe he didn't think this would ever happen. And yes, his weight loss definately played a role in his inability to defend himself, and his logical thinking. 20 pounds is a lot of weight to lose for a thinner man. I can't imagine the fear they both went through. I can't imagine the slow and agonizing death they knew was coming and nothing they could do was going to stop or change it. I'm hoping adrenaline kicked in and the pain was less excruciating. RIP and my condolences to both families.

Nature can display an absolute lack of regard for a person when it comes to survival. People believe Treadwell didn't understand this, but I believe he did. Treadwell knew he was going to get killed at some point, but that wasn't going to deter him from his said mission. What I don't think he really took into account at the level that he should have, was the fact that his close companion could perish as well in his death cult mission. Treadwell was meant to die horribly like that, what he was doing was going to lead to that inevitable end, too bad his partner didn't fully estimate their inevitable end as well.

Steve Irwin was more careful than people realize, but he had a concussion the day he went in to film rays, and wasn't himself. He was irritable and obstinate and not listening. This wasn't like him. Since he was the boss, the others on the boat didn't insist on going back and him going to the hospital like they should have. Instead, they decided to just do some light filming of rays. He wasn't used to that, and his perceptions were off, as well as his mental state. In 20/20 hindsight, they should have stood up to him, knowing he wasn't himself because of his head injury. But he was SUPER careful normally and had rigid rules about how to be around snakes and cross, and always had multiple safety systems in place. He wasn't anything like this defiant Treadwell.

But I wouldn't be "out there" trying to live amongst them. My heart is broken over he and his girlfriend's deaths by the bears. At the same time the bears ARE wild animals and POWEFUL animals. They (the bears) weren't at fault. Treadwell and his girlfriend WERE. They should've left when they were supposed to. There's no easy way to say it; but he and his girlfriend's deaths was HIS own fault. I've never even heard of Timothy Treadwell before now. Nevertheless, my heart breaks over this tragedy.

@@gymboy4524 the audio was released. I just mean many people work, they hate their job, bills and life in general stress them out. Then we get older with who knows 🤷🏼‍♀️ Heart disease, blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes , drug use, a shoebox of prescription medications and all other crap that we end up succumbing to anyway. We all have to go sometimes. I’m not saying he shouldn’t have done what he was doing… I just mean that he seemed like he was enjoying his life and was passionate for what he did… many people never find that in life.

That opening 30 seconds shows how deluded he was talking about the young bears challenging him and him having to stand his ground like some sort of alpha male within the group. He must have thought we was like Tarzan living amongst the apes. 🙄 Tbf he did well surviving 13 seasons amongst the bears and would have lived to return for a 14th year if he'd just flown out on schedule instead of getting in a fight with the airport staff. I guess the majority of the beers were accustomed to his presence and tolerated him. The mean old bear that killed him was not one he was familiar with and was undernourished heading into hibernation. He played Russian Roulette one time too many.

I don’t believe Tredwell had a death wish but honestly believed he had bears figured out & they’d never hurt him. He was a delusional fool with a great heart for nature & therefore humanity. So very sad that he was killed by very animal he loved & thought he was protecting. An easy delusion for animal lovers. RIP Bear Whisperer.

I've never heard the final audio before. I can think of no more a painful death than being mauled by a bear because they don't kill their prey before they eat it like like wolves or mountain lions. They simply hold their prey down and begin eating. You die of shock and blood loss. I feel so bad for both of them. What a nightmare. Many people see Timothy Treadwell as a fool, but the very fact that he lived safely amongst bears for 13 years is a testimony to his understanding of bears and how to interact with them. He only appears foolish to most people because of the inherent danger always present with apex predators around you. He accepted the reward-risk ratio and maybe even underestimated the risk because he was so successful for 13 years.

They'd made it out after another successful season. Certain circumstances led to their decision to return late in the season and sadly that sealed their fate. IMO Treadwell should have had bear spray and electric fencing etc. for no other reason than he was responsible for the safety of his female companion. These effective deterrents are a necessity in case starving wild grizzly bears decide to do some starving wild grizzly bear ish. Better to have it and not need it,than need it and not have it. RIP.

I have read that this tape is staged and the real tape......is off limits forever and in a vault of the park service (or destroyed). I am no expert, but a starving grizzly wouldn't take minutes to kill its prey and it's unlikely that such clear dialogue would occur between victims in such a horrendous attack. I am not downplaying the obvious horrific nature of what obviously occurred.

That was skinny bear! I would be way more fearful of a skinny bear than a big fat one. Still easily powerful enough to knock him flat. Tim obviously had a few screws loose. If he was normal, he could have done a lot of this kind of 'work' and video documenting and lived a long life. He pushed it to the logical conclusion. Had he not died when he did, it is likely he still would have met his end with a bear eventually. The real tragedy is the girlfriend.

And girls are gonna think twice about going on wilderness dates from now on.
