It becomes part of intuition. It is not as scientific as it might seem. Thought and concentration is essential but most of it comes from the intuitive feel that you develop with experience. If I step into a ball to pot down the cushion (especially if the ball isn't 100% against the cushion) doubt often creeps in and I overthink and start to readjust and reassess slightly and I miss. When I force myself to trust my initial position and just focus on cueing through, the pot happens. This is because the angle is already prepared in position, it isn't delivered through the cue. Using top right/left spin only helps in giving it direction, so you can use less force. You still obey the rule of position and cueing when you have chosen your position. Just make sure your spin won't be so considerable that it throws the cue ball off the line, which is something you learn through feel.

A top coach told me the tip for such shots. He said always throw the object ball towards the outer jaw instead of trying to pot the ball. And this tip really worked. Give it a try guys

Spot on! I found that if I play the same side on a cushion shot that it helped the pot almost every time!! I noticed this when I was 17,about 13 years ago now, but I'm glad that I've seen this to confirm what i thought was happening. ✌👊

Thanks for covering shots that are slightly off the cushion, because videos on the subject typically only deal with balls being tight on the cushion. If a ball is a fraction off the cushion the shot is almost impossible to get, because usually the nap of the cloth will throw the ball off if you play it slow, or won't go in if you play it hard unless the shot is played too perfection.

Keep it very simple and get some lessons like I did. once you have picked up bad habits. They will be very difficult to correct. I have been playing for 40 years and started when I was 17. My brother was a very good player and I had lessons from a local pro called Vic Harris. I have always been very methodical which is a good trait for a snooker player because you can practice basic stuff for hours without getting bored. I knowledgeable good player will help a lot. But a good technique will allow any natural ability to shine. These videos are very good but rather daunting for a beginner. Good luck

Handy hints as always. Here's one that will help when the white is right up against the rail. Ever wondered why every single snooker table has a concave semi circle just under the lip of the rail (on the outside of the table rail that is)? Place your fingers in there as an anchor point. you can extend your bridge that way and still be relatively stable and have the cue glide along the top without your fingers obscuring the shot. Hope that makes sense.....

Alright, alright. I'll give you my secret - first I find the potting angle /exact contact point on the object ball. Then when I get down to play the shot I keep that line but move my cue parallel to the potting line but towards whatever side happens to be running - from the left (white ball closer to the right hand pocket, potting into the left) I use left spin - and right when it's the other. You have to judge it right but with some practice it is not such a difficult shot and the running side means position is happening whether you like it or not! The less acute the angle, the less side you need but there is a limit and you reach it just after half ball, when it seems to go back the other way. I've spent days on this shot and it's one of my favourites. These are my little insights so far on cushion potting. I can't for the life of me get a pot with check side but I will. Next level stuff. Hey man, all your videos that I've seen are bloody brilliant! (I just wanted to get that out there first) but this one is like "OH, MY, GOD!!!" I had NO IDEA about any of this at all!! ....omg and now I'm just thinking about all those times going back years that I've been around a pool table or snooker table, no wonder I've been sooo sh!t hahahaha! wtf?! I'm blown away. I had to keep rewinding the video for all these little bits, and stopping it as well, to understand what you meant, to work it out, to really think about it. For me, it's amazing, a revelation! (but there was even a moment when I literally could not understand this one particular word, it was said in such a kind of fast and off-hand way that it took me a while rewinding that one word, and listening to it, and then finally working out that you said "THINNER" hahahaha omg!) (my tinnitus might have a bit to do with that as well though!) I had to really imagine it, think about what's actually happening when you imagine it in slow motion like you did, and then I realised and understood that yeah, the inertia, the forward drive of the cue ball wants to take the object ball with it! (Doh! It seems so obvious now!) So any angled shot is gonna be affected by this (God I'm so slow hahaha!) and would have to be compensated for by slightly over-cutting it. But then when you said if you use left hand side when cutting to the right, and right hand side when cutting to the left, it helps to straighten up the object ball, I really imagined the cue ball 'gripping hold' of the object ball in slow motion and the direction of that grip wants to pull the object ball back up the table! That was like a real wow moment of revelation and realisation to me! Incredible! And as if that wasn't enough, my mind was further blown by the realisation that it's the complete opposite with shots along the cushion! (cos the cushion's in the way!) And then the whole point about the cushion absorbing some of the cue ball as well, you could leave a fraction of a gap! I've seriously had a moment of clarity here, no kidding! and I really can't wait to think about this when I'm next practicing. This information that has blown me away, may well be obvious to many of you out there, but for me, it's just the most delicious, new, intimate concept! Thank you sooo soooo much! X

Very useful! It took me a long time to realise throw and allow for it. Also throw is maximum on 1/2 shots and can be reduced with top or backspin.

You should probably also talk about the effect that speed has on throw. The faster the cue ball when it hits the object ball, the less one needs to worry about throw. Top and bottom reduces throw as well. Watch Anthony Beeler's videos.
