Davis had made a very excellent observation about DIng. I am chinese and have been coached by many local professionals in playing snooker and chinese 8 ball, and one of the most common things that coaches say is to pot the ball center ball with no side at all, and to learn how to achieve angles using only top, centerball, stun and bottom. It is a fairly common ideology here in china that playing with side is only needed when absolutely necessary.

great videos man, i'm from Florianopolis, Santa Catarina, Brazil , snooker is really small here even after helding the Brazil Snooker Masters in 2011, which Shaun Murphy won, everyone plays only 8 ball and most don't even know the rules or never seen the game, there is not a single 12ft table in the city, i found a 10ft table in a club and pretty much practice alone , your videos help a lot man, thanks

Cumprimentos meu caro e bom natal

Other tutorial channels have recommended not using side to make a cut. Instead using top to compensate for throw. It's more forgiving if you don't use the exact right amount and you don't need to compensate for the sideways effect on the cue before it reaches the object ball. To never use side though means when you need it for position you will suddenly regret never using it to make a cut though in my opinion.

This was a bit hard to follow (because I had no idea what the original problem was). I don't know if problem was in sound quality or timings of it. Maybe you cut all the explanations timewise too tightly. This video would not have been too long even if you had left few seconds time for viewer to think before moving on to the next point.

A small detail: The "throw" effect as Americans call it is not because the hit is not instantaneous. It is because there is friction between the balls. A more careful study shows that a longer contact will in fact cut the object ball more. The friction between the balls is the same reason that plants of touching balls can be "adjusted" to one side or the other. Wet the contact point and the friction and adjustment goes away.
@BobJewett
@BobJewett 4 жыл бұрын
Another major reason that you might want to use outside is that it can often remove any possibility of a kick. If the cue ball is rolling across the object ball during contact without rubbing it one way or the other, a kick cannot occur. For most players the complications of aiming with side outweigh the benefit of eliminating kicks. For top players, who can aim well with side, the balance can tip the other way.

@@gemn_i_8842 Alot of snooker has been destroyed because of poker machines, because clubs make alot more profit from their floor space with those. Also pool is alot easier and faster then snooker/billiards. Clubs charge $3 for a quick game with less balls and bigger pockets. You should still be able to find plenty of places to play in Sydney though, but maybe half as much since 20 years ago unfortunately. Good luck mate.

I've often wondered if a fine cut actually imparts sidespin to the object ball. Would you be able to demonstrate if it does or not? If it does, and I think it does a little, then in this case it would be another effect that causes the black to miss on the top cushion side. Playing as shown, the cue ball imparts a small amount of left hand side to the black which makes it turn slightly towards the top cushion as it runs towards the pocket and misses just as shown. Also, a cue ball with a lot of 'running side' could also slightly squeeze (or 'throw') the object ball at a wider angle, so in theory, it's possibly to make a pot that is slightly more than 90 degrees; but I've neither seen it nor tried it. Hmm, looking very closely at the black's path at around 1:44, it does seem as though it is moving on a curved path (small but noticeable) - or am I imagining it?

Your theory is to a vast extent very wrong! Let me explain. You Say at 1 minute in : "When you use outside spin on this cut,. its gonna push the red slightly thinner" ... Right, if you are on a thick cloth like yours or those that are worse. On TV tables, this is the total opposite, and why so many of the pros hit "thick" if they put too much outside (helping side) on those shots. Im a nationalchampion of denmark, so i promise its not garbage from a 32breaker. That particular shot at around 1 minute mark is a classic example of a "big throwshot" . This shot on a no.10 strachan cloth or even 6811 30oz tournament cloth, is a type of shot where you HAVE to aim thinner than the actual centreball potting angle. The throw is ofc most pronounced on the Lowright, and Topright striking areas, in this case 1 o'clock and 5 o'clock. If you are playing on a 2year old carpetcloth (worn to f*ck) then yes, this theory starts to pan out correctly. But with clean new balls and good fast cloth with a glassy surface, it simply isnt true.
@danielkandi4582
@danielkandi4582 4 жыл бұрын
Also another thing. I know of several pro's who agree on the longpot theory, that because of the glassy surface, using a tiny amount of side on longshots is actually beneficial (we're talking less than half a tip of side) . The theory is, that its much harder to consistently hit deadcenter in the cueball. Therefore a small quarter tip of outside english can be added so that the aim is more the same. I use this on completely new cloth when its no.10 or strachan superfine. I would actually recommend you Strachan Superfine instead of what you have. Your recreationshot compilations will become near identical if u get that.

So, Daniel , do you play cut shots with 'helping side'? As I'm implementing it now in my game, it feels different. Most surprising is a significant disproportion of the amount of misses between left and right cut. Anyway, another positive point is maybe a better feeling for the center, if one learns to play with helping side?
@dnbmania
@dnbmania 4 жыл бұрын
I don't really understand. All the rulebooks say avoid side whenever possible but supposedly most snooker players are using side on angled shots? Seems backwards to me. I've heard this 'helping side' idea before but surely it's not worth it
@Breakfromlife
@Breakfromlife 4 жыл бұрын
A lot of players sometimes subconsciously just start using sidespin on these sort of shots. If you learn to play like this it can be difficult to do anything else
@dnbmania
@dnbmania 4 жыл бұрын
It's an interesting concept. You would you have to learn the 'cut induced throw' at different speeds Vs judging how much side is needed for a certain speed. I personally do the first one
@Anschutzhammerlitoz

I've been trying to break myself of this habit. I strike the cue center-ball, but at impact I use my right hand to guide the cue tip to the outside, so the stroke ends up being not straight through. I don't know how much effect it has. Unfortunately it's a habit I developed over hundreds (thousands?) of mis-spent hours as a teen, and it reinforces itself every cut shot. If I allow myself to stroke in my normal fashion I pot the ball; if I force myself to stroke straight through on a cut shot I miss too often. It may be that the misses are cause by focusing on my right hand so much at the expense of everything else.

I disagree. You can’t cherry pick one top 16 player. Most of the top 10 players use spin on the majority of shots. Note:that was Ding’s only decent performance in two seasons and he was out early next tournament.. I’m an ‘ok’ player and use dpin on most shots other than straight in. Having side spin as one’s default hit makes one more proficient for controlling cue ball position on the majority of shots.

A vast majority of players prefer Outside English / Side Spin (OE), to turn shots wider from a thick aim. However, the throw from OE varies much more than the throw from Inside English. For those who become familiar with pivoting for squirt correction, Inside English becomes a powerful weapon. It takes a while for OE players like myself who grew up with English 8 Ball and Snooker.

Great videos. I live in Odense, Denmark, and we need a pin. Not the most famous of cities, but it is, however, the birthplace of our poet, Hans Christian Andersen and our tennis player, Caroline Wozniacki. I mostly play pool, but when I have played snooker, it has been extremely good exercise. The pool table pockets seem like barn doors, when you come straight from a snooker table. My highest snooker break is 30 😊My best in 8-ball and 9-ball are two straight run outs on some occasions.
