Wow that’s exceptional footage, nice work…. Because you have a love of salmonids and mentioned RED chinook I’ll tell you a little story. My union is on strike so I headed north from my hometown Toronto to fish and camp the highlands for trout. We get very warm summers in Ontario and our trout and salmon go deep for the summer. The place I was at doesn’t have deep water shore access so I go out early in the morning, best coldest time in the summer, and cast, I don’t have much faith, but any good angler knows perseverance is paramount. Anyhow, the water was too warm, but got a few nice largemouth bass unharmed released… On the way home I stopped at a lake that has a steep cliff near shore that drops to 40 feet almost immediately, the lake gets to 200. I casted my red/gold 2/5 Oz little Cleo and let it sink to the bottom before aggressively rip jigging it back. First cast hit something good and it was pulling drag. I kept pressure on but I figured it was a smallmouth bass as they can reside deep in summer. It was a 2lb splake (lake trout crossed with brook trout), brook trout are arguably the most beautiful salmonoid, they stock lots in BC. Anyhow, a couple head shakes at the surface and it spit the hook and headed back down deep, too bad as they have crimson red meat and I would have harvested it. Anyhow, it was unbelievably RED. It’s spots and belly were on fire. I’ve caught a good amount of spake and brook trout, but this appeared like a jewel to me it was so red…. Lucky to see it. BTW a few more thousand returning reds is good news in a world of mostly environmental degradation.

@@petrhermanadventures9509 very true also the consistent use of proper techniques will cause adaptation that allow you to hold your breath even longer. Great video, love to see all the fish I couldn’t catch the last few weekends lol.

You're welcome. I'm always happy to net a fish, because it's far better for the fish if it's being released.

The red chinooks show up in the summer, so it's not actually all that cold, probably 12 degrees. When I dive it in the winter it's about 4 degrees and that's brutal, face goes numb fast.

Thank you Petr for sharing some amazing footage and different perspectives. If the Chilliwack/Vedder was open after July, this would have been the targeted species and run in July, correct? This is the first time in over 5 years (maybe longer) since I last issued my non-tidal license. I'm just trying to understand the fishing seasons again for the Chilliwack/Vedder system. Cheers!

Yes, this is the only species of salmon open for retention in July and August.

Really cool video as always! Always nice to see so many fish. Am I misunderstanding? There are 500ish fish there when there normally should be a couple thousand? I always think you're so brave to grab lures in the water with your barehands, especially trebles, I would probably hook myself.

Most years the total run of these summer chinooks is about 2000. They trickle in over a period of about 2 months, starting in late June.
