Love your channel. You're not scared of saying what you think of things which is very refreshing. One thing that is frustrating to me on all vehicle reviews is comparing them. If you want to test tires, put them on the same spec vehicles. You want to test AWD or 4-wheel drive systems, put the same tires on both. I don't care what the stock tires compare like. I want to know if I throw snow tires on the Subaru and the Toyota, which is going to perform better. You can put any tires on any vehicle so I want to know which traction system will work the best on what tire I decide to change it to. Just my 2 cents.

Yeah, the Raptor is a monster, and it had to plow up that last hill in worse conditions. But the other cars have one advantage the Raptor, and other 4x4's don't have, and that is their much reduced weight. Those cars are very light vs their traction capabilities, and would have been even better slightly aired down. The Bronco is a superior beast, but at least half of that added power and 4x4 capability HAS to be there to handle the significantly increased weight of those systems themselves. This is why if you have a Bronco sport, Subaru Outback or Forester, or Rav4, the last thing you want to do is defeat your biggest advantage, and loade it up with 800 more pounds of offroad crap like winches and roof tents etc. That's fine if you are just camping on fireroads, but if you want to go thru soft sand and snow, or really rutted terrain, or steep inclines, you want to keep as light as possible, because that is your ace in the hole. You are a billy goat. I carry a minimal amount of emergency tools, a tow hitch, super lightweight snow chains that are just for legal requirement show, and s kinetic tow rope. Then I have food and water, an electic cooler and a power station with solar panels. And that is ALL I will carry. I bought everything with weight in mind and although it would be nice to have twice the gear and clothes and tents, it would mess up my MPG and my ability to soft road harder trails. Databyter

Anything after 2020 in the Subaru Outback XT line, or others with the Turbo powered engine, will also tow 3500. Most Rav4's that are not Adventure trim or TRD will only tow 1500 I think. But if you tow alot I think I'd be more comfortable with a traditional transmission in the Rav4, especially since you can change the oil and maintain it. Subaru says to NOT change the CVT fluid on their vehicles. If you tow, I think it is smart to change the fluid more often. Subaru America claims that this is basically never needing to be changed. Maybe 60-90 K if you do. I figure if you are towing a lot at close to capacity, it should be 4 times as much.

I am a Subaru fan and I have a Wilderness Outback. I have to say, other than the clearance I think the Rav4 system is pretty good. That was a heckuva challenge and a lot of holes and ditches to fall into. That being said, the Subaru with it's better clearance and better tires was the obvious winner here. But I wouldn't say the Rav4 failed in any way. With a dedicated owner used to how it responds, perhaps some slightly better tires, perhaps aired down, it might have made it up. Especially if the Rav4 can fitted with tires a few sizes up by a new owner, which I do not know if that's possible due to wheel well clearance issues.. I know I went two sizes up on my Wilderness immediately and never looked back. No rubbing. It has raised my ground clearance to over 10" without a lift. It really helps. And I have the real Falken AT Trails with the Severe Snow three peak rating. I wonder if the Rav4 version at least has the M+S rating at least, because where I live you need at LEAST that on a passenger AWD to be allowed to travel on snowy highways without chains during our R1 and R2 conditions. And chains usually are not recommended for AWD's, and on many of them, like my Subaru, they are basically forbidden due to both AWD and Clearance issues. I carry them with me to comply with the law, but I am not required to install them because I have the winter rated tires. The minimum to be considered a winter rated tire in California IS the M+S rating, the Three Peak Rating is far above that being not just snow and ice rated, but SEVERE snow and ice rated. It's not just the tread, but the rubber formulation which has to stay pliant and somewhat soft even in cold weather. This is expensive so I guess Toyota was economizing on their material, a poor decision in my opinion. If you're going to go with a brand model, don't skimp on it's full features. Anyway I digress. I thought BOTH vehicles did really well, and both have certain advantages. If the Rav4 had better tires and clearance it would have given the Subaru more of a run for it's money because it also has a fine AWD logic, with a superior clutched differential system in back, paired with a traditional transmission that is more bullet proof while attacking obstacles. I would also add that neither of these holds a candle to the segment king of off road performance, the Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk. I had a 2015 Trailhawk and took it on proper 4x4 trails with no issue thanks to the full skidplates, real low range and real locker. It was just cursed with Jeep "reliability" which is why I traded it in on a Tacoma.

So true about the Trailhawk, that's practically a beast in it's own category. But for the same reason, I got rid of my Jeep reluctantly, after the warranty expired it became an alligator, spending more time in the repair shop than on the road. The Toyota/Subaru options are the next best thing once a person has had it with non-stop repairs, even if in stock form they leave something to be desired as compared to Jeep abilities. Easy enough to take both Toyota's and Subaru 's up a notch in capabilities through aftermarket options.

Very nice review. I do believe the Forester created better ‘lines’ for the RAV4 to get up. I thought the off-road down the trails was a more even test. I think you should have given the Trd the first attempt on one of the two hills. Trd benefited from forester going first on the first hill. Just watch wheel spin going up for forester. Then you packed down the snow coming down. Should have walked down and drive the RAV4 up. Just my $0.02. You mentioned at the end, the TRD gave power lift gate. The Forester Wilderness does come with a power lift gate. Even comes with height setting and lock function on the rear lift gate for one press close and lock. Listening objectively to your review, it sounds like you are trying to find ways to speak positively about the RAV4 without making it look like it wasn’t truly as capable as the Forester. You ended the show saying you would pick the Forester, but stood next to the RAV4 to end the video. I understand you have to walk a fine line when being ‘lent’ vehicles for reviews, that you can get black-balled for a poor review. But let’s not show one thing while saying another. Funniest part for me was listening to the breathing getting heavy and labored as you went up the hill…driving a car. Keep the videos coming. I’ll be watching.

I'd definitely go with the Subaru. In large part for reasons never demonstrated in videos comparing vehicles. Subarus 4 wheel drive is extremely good, but two things that make them such fantastic cars are the symmetrical 4WD and the boxer engine. It's harder to recognize on a dirt road covered in deep snow, but when you are ascending - especially pulling away on a slick uphill road, the symmetrical 4WD can be a game changer. I often drive narrow roads, often mountainous and will quite often have to stop on the upward slope while a vehicle struggles to get up the hill. If they make it, I then have to do a standing start, if they don't I have to do a standing start and squeeze by them. Either way, the symmetrical 4WD means I have no unwanted torque steer. The car pulls ahead straight, not pulling to one side. The other colossal advantage that never gets shown off on the Subaru is the boxer engine. Some reviewers criticize it, for its power and other complaints. The reality is by putting an engine where all the weight is down low and pretty much contained within the radius of the wheels, you get a massive increase in stability. Driving on snowy mountain roads with some huge drop offs, it can be very disconcerting on corners when you can physically feel the momentum in your engine as it tries to continue in a straight line as you go round a bend. Inline or V engines have (comparatively) too much weight, too high above the wheels. If reviewers could get access to a skid pad, I'm pretty sure they could demonstrate this pretty easily. - something like a collision avoidance test in slippery conditions. I have no doubt that Subarus would shame most vehicles.

They are Falken Trails, which are nice AT tires. but they don't have the three peak rating which means they have the tread, but are made out of a material that doesn't stay pliant in cold weather as well as the three peak Falkens do. And ALL Falken trails, except apparently the ones Toyota puts on their cars, are Severe Snow Rated. These ones according to this channel do NOT have that rating, which means, they probably do not have the same Rubber Formulation, to save money, which, TOYOTA, that was a mistake. Databyter

@@Databyter They have several version of those tires apparently, seems other review channels have ran into this as well, but you'd think being an "offroad" oriented vehicle they'd have a much better tire....Falken Trail tires are anything but AT's, those aren't any more aggressive than the Cooper M&S tires I have on my pickup LOL...actually I think the Coopers are a bit more aggressive...the only thing is, neither are technically "Snow" rated, that snow symbol only means they're capable of handling deep snow, not packed snow/ice that you run into far more often running around town. People I think have a huge misunderstanding of that 3 peak mountain snowflake symbol...it doesn't mean they're snow tires, it means they'll handle deep fresh snow better than a regular all season.
@Databyter Жыл бұрын
@@wildbill23c Actually the Falkens Are considered AT tires. In fact in some ways, they are more AT than the thick aggessive heavy lugged mud tires you are thinking of. Keep reading to the end for an explanation of that. AT tires have a wide range of classifications from dedicated offroad mud, sand or snow, or more commonly some level of on-road manners mixed with offroad capability. Falcon A/T trails are designed with thick sidewalls and are suitable for airing down. They ARE a crossover AT tire, i.e. they share attributes that make them work on and offroad. And they are EXCELLENT offroad, especially aired down. Further the three peak rating on the Falken AT Trails, is superior to the regular M+S rating that signifies they are adequate for Mud and Snow. To be rated for the Three Peak, which is suitable for SEVERE snow and winter conditions, it is not just the tread, but the material itself that comes to play. Falkens for instance use a formulation in their tires that keeps them pliant even in cold weather, without being too soft in warmer weather. This is EXPENSIVE, which is probably why I spent a lot on my Falkens, and Toyota didn't spend a lot on their nerfed versions. You are right in the sense that they are not Winter (winter only) tires. They are suitable for summer weather. But they ARE snow rated tires, and they are suitable for severe winter weather. They are just not SOLEY dedicated for it. Most dedicated winter tires that don't need to compromise to be summer usable are a superior design for the conditions they are optimised for but most of us don't need (or want) dedicated winter tires.. The Falken Three peaks, and those of other brands have to pass rigorous tests to get that rating. It's no joke, and they ARE tested on packed snow and considered suitable for severe winter conditions... In California where I live, you don't need snow chains if you have an M+S rating stamped in your sidewall under R1 and R2 restrictions IF you have a lightweight passenger vehicle with 4wheel drive (4x4 or AWD). The three Peaks rating is about 3 levels higher than that and if a CHP officer sees that he is not even going to look for the M+S rating, and you will NOT have to use chains in a 4wheel drive vehicle, including AWD vehicles. This information is from CHP, Caltrans, And most tire stores blog.tiremart.com/tire-ratings-three-peak-mountain-snowflake-vs-ms-tires/ I am familiar with it because I am planning winter trips and wanted to be sure about chains and such. I am REQUIRED to carry chains. I am NOT required to actually put them on, so I bought the cheapest lightest smallest chains that would fit my vehicle.. I've had my stock tires in the snow, and they did great. I believe they were also 3peak tires from another brand. Those are the ones in the video on the Forester. But I now have the Falken Wildpeak AT Trails with the 3peak rating on my Outback Wilderness. They are just as effective as snow tires except perhaps studded snow tires, which is a whole other ballpark for snow and ice. It is a MYTH that you need super aggressive gig lugged mud treaded tires in the snow. In fact you do NOT want that. You will dig a hole quickly. You want what you see on the Falkens. Same with sand. You are better off having BALD tires, than super aggresive treads. That is why those big badass trucks and jeeps with the giant cool looking mud treads get stuck in about 5 seconds in the snow, and 4 seconds in the sand. You want a tread that floats without digging too much. Falken will do better than your average heavy Mud AT tires in the snow. This is especially true for these relatively lighweight crossover vehicles. The tread you see is designed to be the optimum amount of aggression and pattern. It's not all about giant lugs my friend. Not unless you are JUST gonna be in dirt and mud. This is why tires with some aggression but not too much are better in more terrains that the popular giant lugged mud terrain ATs that you are thinking of that LOOK great, and are super in mud, but fail in sand and snow. The Falken Trails excell in Mud, Dirt, Rocks, Deep Sand, and Deep snow. They ARE versatile All-Terrain tires that are a good choice for all year driving, on and off road, and in severe winter conditions.. They are also fantastic on the pavement, even in wet weather. A side note about winter tires: In my personal experience, studless snow tires like Blizzaks excel with on road conditions like nothing else. In off road conditions like this where there is a mix of mud thrown in, the tread pattern becomes packed with mud and they become useless. As they start spinning, they hit rocks below and the rocks destroy the tread (don't ask how I know lol). I have found that a studded winter tire performs much better in these conditions and if you ever encounter conditions like this, adding chains to your kit, although not a 100% guarantee it will more than likely get you thru most of what you will throw at it.

I live in eastern South Dakota. Winter is five months long--real winter. Unlike you, I don't "visit" winter, I live in it. This winter has been extra tough with temps well below zero for days at a time and over 5 feet of snow (so far.) My hobby is roaming the back roads and section roads on the weekends. I drive a 2021 Forester with Blizzak tires, carry x4 recovery boards, 60 feet of tow line, two snow shovels, and some of those plastic tire "chains." Had the Forester for two winters now and have never been really stuck. The Blizzak tires do make a huge difference. What I liked about the RAV4 on your video is the wheels have wide openings. When you're in deep snow it will pack up on the inside of the rims and you have to scrape it off when you get on the highway. You can reach through the openings on the RAV4 and do that. On my Forester I have to crawl under the freaking car, scrape what I can, then pull it forward and crawl under again to get the the other half of the rim. Pain in the butt! Subaru needs wider openings on their wheels. That said, the fact the RAV4 has no tow attachments is a complete total non-starter for me. That just doesn't work when you're 40 miles from any place with a tow truck and the best you're going to do is a farmer with a 4000 Series John Deere. I have the factory hitch on my Forester and have used it a number of times to pull people out. Subaru needs to come up with better tow hooks on the front, preferably two of them. HUGE overisght. So with that in mind, I judge the RAV4 to be just a vehicle for the suburbs.

Great review! As others have mentioned it would have been more accurate to have each vehicle using an equivalent winter tire, but I realize the manufacturer would not allow you to do this. Both seem like winners to me as I doubt 98% will ever take them on this type of steep, muddy type of snow hill. With results fairly close, (IMO a slight edge going to Subaru), I would still choose the Toyota for the rock-solid reliability as I have many friends who have Subaru.. and love them, but often complain of the frequent and high cost of repairs.

Anyways, both are great vehicles. Subbies stands a step ahead because of it's rugged design, best in class AWD, higher ground clearance and smoother suspension. Great video. I like the camera man driving and presentation too.. :)

True...the tires must be the SAME on both vehicles or testing (like this) is next to meaningless. -- BR

It’s because Subaru and Toyota are sharing their technology with each other being partners. Toyota shares hybrid technology, subaru shares their cvt tech

@@camatis9661 Subaru is leaps and bounds above a Toyota off-road. The tires should be the same, but it wouldn’t matter. Subaru is twice the vehicle.

@@billredding2000 While I agree with the sentiment and would be ideal to have same damn tires, it was covered in the video why it doesn't regularly happen.
@billredding2000 Жыл бұрын
@@kpcasey Yes, the TFL channel (for one example) says why they don't put "appropriate" tires on their test vehicles (even off-road): They test cars with whatever tires the factory puts on them as most people will keep them on (at least until they wear out). That DOES make sense. So in most conditions "street-tires" are probably fine (being All-Season likely). However, in "less than most conditions" -- such as in snow/off-road/hilly "testing" as seen here -- the "tire factor variable" needs to be ruled-out in order to give each vehicle's AWD system a true/level field to compare them so they can compete fairly. After all, tires are where the vehicle meets the road be it dry pavement, rain or snow and "technically-speaking" the tires may well be the MOST important factor. So IMO, it still remains that "testing" with different tires when the goal is comparing 2 vehicles' AWD systems -- to see how good (or not!) their AWD systems are -- doesn't result in any meaningful results. BTW, I'd never go off-road in snowy/challenging conditions with All Season tires unless I had to. But I certainly would with the AT3W tires I currently have ANY time. Regards, -- BR

Your reviews are just awesome. How can I watch a fluffy on-road review after seeing hardcore content like this?

Just bought a 23 Wilderness Forester. I've never been more excited to drive a car. Plus since it only had 10k, the warranty was still valid and it was Certified Preowned got a 100k or 7 year powertrain. Better than buying new!

I'm running Winterforce Tires on my 04 Highlander, 67 Wagoneer, and 04 Sport Trac and Blizzaks on my 20 GX 460. No problems with deep snow and ice. Push through bumper deep snow. Grill deep with Wagoneer and CJ7 (no plastic bumpers or grills to break). Ran them on my 94 Previa All Trac and 03 Odyssey FWD as well. I'd take a 2wd with snow tires over a AWD or 4WD with bad or hard rubber compound tires, but combo of 4x4 or awd and winter tires is unstoppable!

Excellent comparison! I've been looking at both the Rav4 & Forester. Too bad they don't have a demo model to take to the snow to test drive. Thank you for this video. I just purchased the 2024 Forester - I hope it does just as well.

These are city-to-light mountain trail cars. I live in the seattle area, so you see a lot of subaru and rav4. lots of hikers and ski/snowboarders (but ski places are plow, I got here with a 2 wheels jetta, I wouldn't hit any side roads tho). If you need more clearance (or get better tires) the 4-runner and those jeeps' other 4x4 will. I drive in the city 95-99% of the time why I went rav4 hybrid. I have my snow chains when needed.

Got 2017 forester XT i have been pleased with it here in Finland it actually has some use every winter, not yet been able to get it stuck the highest snow was over the bumper that I drove tho was powder but still. The biggest issue is the bit slow trunk open and close.

Wife chose a Forester Sport over the RAV4 and CRV. She loves the great visibility, panorama sunroof, power lift gate and the confidence inspiring awd. As the diy mechanic I love the engine bay with its longitudinal mounting and ease of access to the accessories. We love our Subie.

Great video and comparison. I have 2022 Subaru Forester and was interested to see how the tires performed in challenging terrain. I normally go with a more aggressive fully dedicated winter tire but was pleased to see the performance of the stock tires. I have a heated steering wheel in my Forester Wilderness. It’s a must have in the colder Canadian winters.

I'm glad to know they have a heated steering wheel option. I'll take that over heated seats any day... though I know they go together.

Great video. I appreciate seeing how well the snow mode works on the Rav4. My only real complaint about the Rav4, since the tires can be easily changed, is the lack of tow points. It makes no sense at all and I'm struggling to find a solution that won't likely damage a front or rear bumper cover as you'll likely need to strap to a suspension component for recovery and the angle of the recovery strap will pull into one of those covers. Anybody have a good solution to adding recover points?

i would pick the Forester. Although that Toyota performed much better than I expected. That was a great show of applied engineering. Love these videos you make

lol, I sure remember these days of driving in places like that. Here are some tips that may help out. When driving in snowy and steep conditions with a 4x4 vehicle like a Subaru Forester or Toyota RAV4, several techniques can enhance your safety and control. First, it’s essential to start in low gear when driving uphill, as this provides more torque and better control, reducing the chances of spinning out. Smooth acceleration and braking are also crucial; gradually applying the accelerator helps avoid tire slippage, while gentle braking maintains traction and prevents skidding. It's important to maintain a steady speed while climbing hills. If you slow down too much, you may lose momentum, making it difficult to continue ascending. Additionally, ensure your vehicle has proper winter tires (sadly you were unable to do that), as they offer better traction in snow and ice compared to all-season or summer tires. Looking ahead while driving is key; scanning the road for changes in terrain and obstacles allows you to plan your route effectively and prevents sudden adjustments that could lead to a loss of control. Likewise, avoid any sudden steering or braking movements, as gentle inputs provide better handling and help maintain traction. When descending steep hills, make use of engine braking by taking your foot off the accelerator and allowing the engine to slow you down. This technique reduces reliance on brakes, which can become less effective on slippery surfaces. Familiarize yourself with your 4WD system; some vehicles have specific modes designed for snow or off-road driving that can enhance your control in such conditions. Maintaining a safe distance between your vehicle and other obstacles ahead is also essential, as stopping distances are longer in snow and you will need more time to react. It’s wise to carry supplies in your vehicle, such as a shovel (which you had done). If possible, practice driving in snowy conditions in a safe and open area to build your confidence and understand how your vehicle handles. Finally, remain calm if you find yourself slipping or sliding. Focus on steering in the direction you wish to go and avoid overreacting to the situation. By employing these strategies, you can enhance your driving experience and safety in snowy and steep conditions with your 4x4 vehicle. Always exercise caution and adjust your driving according to the current road conditions.
