Well done on the impeller kit modification and LED lights. I installed the Snowblower kit available on ebay on my Bolens 21" 3 impeller blade 2 stage snowblower which is powered by the venerable 5 hp. Tecumseh. Installation took about an hour. For lighting I have found the super bright LED headlamp you strap on works great and provides more the adequate lighting for snowblowing in my unlit suburban home.

I have 4 impeller blades on my 2nd stage. I only put rubber pads on 2 of them, opposite each other to keep it balanced. It is not necessary to do all 4 as you can see from the video. It is important to keep the rubber pads all the same size and wt to keep the 2nd stage impeller balanced. (ie) If you have a 3 blade impeller you need 3 rubber pads to keep it balanced.

It's funny to see people trying to throw the snow 20 feet when it needs to go 3 😁. I was just waiting for some random rock sitting in the snow to go flying through that window. Don't get me wrong... sometimes it's got to be thrown a long ways to get it where it needs to be and the impeller mod seems to really work well for this. I just laugh when people get excited about being able to throw it so far when it can be dumped so close. I watched one guy in a video throw all of his snow all the way across the street onto his neighbors lawn area.

Paul, the video at around 5:00 with the chute turned to the right, is very good at showing how with Ariens making the depth of the chute shorter from the bottom up, how this allows snow to fly up back in to your face. You can see how the snow collects on to the petrol tank and dashboard. But notice when it is turned to the left, it does not happen.

Hey Paul, thanks for referencing my video in your comments. I love the modifications you made on your snow blower. I would love to add lights but I don't have any lights currently. Also I love the chains, do you find them useful?

I find the tire chains very useful on slopes and on old icy conditions. Bought them at www.tirechain.com/ Go to snow blower tire chains: and pick your tire size. I bought the 2 link spacing, heavy duty chains but they were very close to the 2nd stage housing and I had to shim one of the wheels out a bit. If I had to do it over I would get the 2 link spacing, medium duty. If You can get OEM, that would probable be the best if the're 2 link spacing not 4 link spacing.

Great information. yea if you engine does not have a alternator you are out of luck with the headlight. I have used a light i got at Harbor Freight tools. It is called a head light as well but this goes on my head. Not as bright as the cree or OEM but i got to tell ya. it is almost as good. LED = very bright and batteries lasts a LONG time I use this with my lawn mower as well at night when it gets dark early in the fall.

Paul, l like your videos. They do help. I just got a Ariens Delux 28 SHO snow thrower. I added LED lights. That gave me a Ton of light. I'm going to do the impeller mod. Kept it simple, found a top rated seller on eBay and ordered the kit. Any suggestions as to installing the rubber on this 3 blade impeller? They have a very cupped or up swepped leading edge.

A very good video. How much throwing distance do you figure you gained by adding the impeller kit and how far are you throwing now? I think it would have been better to have some one else do the video while you threw the snow, because we really do not get a good look or idea on how far the snow is going.

+Kielbasa Glen Thanks for the compliment. Before the impeller mod, it used to throw about 20-25 ft. After the mod on only 2 impellers, about 30-40 ft. Some other things that add to the performance are: 1) my Ariens came with 4 impellers, many blowers have 3 impellers (25% more snow thrown in 1 revolution) 2) SnowJet Non stick spray also doesn't allow snow/ ice to build up and bogg down the machine. I may do another video using the tripod. I usually use the Kubota to do snow removal.

if you live in the city would you recommend people using the impeller mod.. it seems to really add the distance which may be a problem for neighbors living on top of each other

You can adjust your chute for a lower angle/shorter throw, or rev it up and throw it two neighbors over :).

The only flickering I saw in the video was the reflections of the lights bouncing off the machine in the daytime during the demo. Did not see any flickering in the night video.

Is it the flaps giving your blower that great throwing distance?

The Ariens always seemed to throw snow further then the other snow blowers that I researched 11 yrs ago. My Ariens has a 4 blade 2nd stage Impeller. Maybe that was some of the difference. But it never did that until I did the MOD. The 3/8" thick mud flat really made it kick like You see in the video, Did You hear it chewing up the 2 day old crusted ice? I wouldn't use thinner rubber, I don't think You would have the same effect. I put them on the flat part only of the impeller blade, not the swoop-up part. Not bad for an 11 years old machine and a 63 year old man. Hope You enjoyed this video. Thank You for your comment and interest.

I checked out your channel and looked at your snow blower. You have 3 impellers and would need to use 3 rubber pads for the mod to keep the 2nd stage impeller balanced. Keep them all the same size if you go for the mod.

Thanks for the tips. Gonna give this project a go as soon as I can get some time in the garage. Have you had any problems with the self tapping screws coming loose? Thanks for viewing my channel, I've just started it.
@paulsargent6688
@paulsargent6688 9 жыл бұрын
Local Yard Works No screws have come loose. When I prepared them, I cut them all the same size and clamped them together. Then I marked a center line and drilled 2 holes through the center line of all the pads, 1 inch from the ends. Unclamped them and put the screws into the holes. Made it easier to keep them in place when installing them. Used a nut driver socket and a long extension on a drill. Removed the chute and into the impeller housing area then screwed them in place. If the pads wear out, turn them around and rescrew them in with new screws. They will already be aligned for the holes. Thats why I did the center line and 1 inch from the ends. Hope that makes sense and helps.

How many led watts can you put on there you said 18w can 36w work.
@dave_6391

Those Ebay LED lights are really not 18w In the measurements they are 9 to 10 watts. at best, and the "Cree LED's" are Chinese knock offs and are no where as bright as a real Cree. But it is a good Video and good job.

Yep, those are the exact same ones on ebay from the same company. Don't get me wrong they are bright, but real CREE LED would be like daylight. Also if you look at them in a power sequence with a voltage regulator, you will see the leds actually have dead cells or some cells light up more than others at different voltage. hard to see when they are just on or off but the output whit real CREE's are day to night. Trust me, I bought a pair and tested them. But for what you are using it for it is just fine.

A real Cree???..... Chinese Republic Electrical Engineers. CREE.
@dave_6391
@dave_6391 7 жыл бұрын
Cree is American company not Chinese they were founded in Durham, NC in 1987 not China, and cree is a shorting of Cree Research, Inc and in no way meant "Chinese Republic Electrical Engineers" since they were founded in 1984 in Durham, NC by graduates of North Carolina State University. Your acronym of their name is only a Recently made up acronym to show the cheap ebay wanna be "CREE" lights that have no testing and or real output measurements that can be sold under a name AKA Fake Cree's. Compare a real cree from the actual plant to the Chinese knockoffs and you will see that the difference is night and day. Also do a look up on "Chinese Republic Electrical Engineers" There is no such thing. It is nothing more than a made up acronym.

Tire chains: Bought at; www.tirechain.com/ I like the 2 link spacing, medium duty. Heavy duty may hit the 2nd stage housing as the wheels rotate. Easiest way to put the chains on. Remove 1 wheel at a time from the machine and take out 1/2 the air and do the job on a work bench. Refill the tire then do the other tire.

I found out my stator/ charger/ alternator coil is 18 watts. I will be removing one of the Led Lights from the snow blower so as not to overload it. Googled my engine Tecumseh HMSK85-155913C Found that info on www.barrettsmallengine.com Looked at the exploded diagram and found the alternator. Mine was 18 watts, so that is the max I should use.

just a thought but if you looked up the original OEM bulb, it was likely 18 watts as well as most use 1141 style tail light bulbs. So you could (as I did) and replace the OEM bulb with a 7w LED automotive bulb and then add 2 more 5 w LED spots, p.s. Nice vid!
@paulsargent6688
@paulsargent6688 9 жыл бұрын
Thank You for the comments. I believe my bulb was an 1156. That may be a good alternative for some folks to run it that way.I don't have any experience with the twist in replacement LED bulbs and what wattage they come in. If they come in 18 watt, just replace the bulb and your done. Good call. I would like to see some videos of how they do.
