I have the exact same 826 Toro. I did the modification, and I just cleared the heaviest, wettest 4" of slushy snow, and ran through it in second gear! At one point it looked like water pumping out of the chute! Great video, Thanks!

I live in Canada where it's cold as a mofo. Wet snow is generally not a problem However I recently traded an old snowblower for some firewood and was not impressed with how the snow dribbled out its shoot. This guy seems pretty smart, so I tried this modification. On closer inspection of my impellers they were all slightly bent back on an angle. After straightening them out ,I did this modification and if I hadn't of spent the time to do this modification I wouldn't have noticed that. My snowblower now throws like hell and I'm certainly glad that I did this. Cheers!

Thank you for taking the time to produce this (and all) your video(s). I used rubber from an old truck bed mat on my new snow blower last summer, and the difference was astounding! It was a little difficult modifying an essentially brand new machine (used one winter), but I feel this simple modification made my machine perform like I thought it should have originally. Deep, heavy, water laden snow just flies across the yard with no clogging. I really appreciate your "work with what you have" approach so people like me can make improvements without spending a bunch of cash.

I bought my snowblower several years ago and used it twice. The first year was not too bad, we had one good dump of dry snow. The second year it was several dumps of wet with freezing and thawing. Once the snow was damp the snowblower was useless! Every 5' or so I had to clear the chute. I finished the job by hand. This last season I happened across your video and thought I'd give the machine one more chance, after sitting in the garage for 2 winters. It took me about 30 minutes to do this, in the freezing cold outside with my hands going numb. WOW, it was worth it! This thing now plows though snow wet or dry, sends that snow right across my driveway, and over my 6' fence if I'm not careful. Thank you for posting this video!

To think I almost threw my 22 inch snow blower in the garbage for constant clogging. Thanks to this video I modified the impeller and now my snow blower works amazing. It went from shooting snow from 6-8 feet to 15-20 feet. A couple of days ago we got rain than snow and it had no problem throwing slush and I couldn't clog it. Thanks again for the video.

OK, just one more success story. I gave a neighbor of mine some of the 1/4 thick conveyer belting I have and he used it on a vintage Craftsman track driven old beast of a snow blower he got from his father. This unit is the good old day toughbuilt stuff that sears sold when I was a kid. Because the machine had a lot of space between the paddles and the tunnel is why I think, as you do I believe, he says it made the old girl throw snow twice as far as before and not clog in the wet crap. Sixtyfiveford, I wanted to give you a big thank you for making this video. I just recently did this upgrade and it made a huge improvement with my snowblower. I used rubber from the sidewall from a old tire and used stainless steel nuts and bolts. I had a chance to use it on one of the last snow falls of this year - wet heavy snow. It worked great. I would say it was blowing about twice as far as before. Thanks again.

@@o0Avalon0o I can't remember exactly right now but, I think I used a sharp utility knife and a pair of tin snips.

@@o0Avalon0o sidewalls are easy to cut with just a utility knife, if you just leave the tire bead alone. If you're trying to cut the tire tread, the only possible way to do it is with a reciprocating saw. I put the tire between tire ramps to create a slot for cutting; makes short work of it. The tire pads are multi purpose and good for all sorts of things like Jack stand pads, hydraulic jack pads, motorcycle kickstand pads, and knee saver kneeling pads 😎 Sidewall probably works better for the impeller extension than the tread area, which probably is too thick to work with, so I'll probably try it with that.

I live in Detroit Lakes, MN - 45 miles East of Fargo, ND. & I saw your video last night and converted my 8hp Craftsman today. I had the heavy impellers so I had to buy a long drill bit for this project because it was a long reach & bolted the 3" belting I got from M&H supply with 1" x 5/16" bolts and used nylon lock nuts - I lubed the inside of the drum with oil for the start-up and fired it up - Interesting noise for sure. I let it run for a couple of minutes and everything looks great - Now all I have to do is wait for the snow and that will be the real test. Thanks for the great idea.

I did this mod to my MTD SNOW FLITE (1984 vintage) with the 1/4-20 bolts due to the heavier gauge steel in the impeller. I used 2 1/4-20 bolts per paddle per impeller blade, I have 4 on my machine, 8 bolts total. I also added washers and lock washers as well, no nylon locking nuts though, as I doubt I would need them.

We were gifted with an old MTD/YardMan 2 stage blower at the beginning of this season, this last big storm she shredded her auger belt. Her drive belt looks ready to go as well. I can't wait to give her new belts and add impeller paddles, and say goodbye to the clog after clog at the end of the driveway and in the gutter. Thanks for the Video!

Awesome! It was so cold but I broke her down in my kitchen!! LOL I love my wife! I put on the new belts and I used thick baler belt rubber for the paddles. The self tapping screws wouldn't go through the impeller blades so I drilled holes and used nuts & bolts to secure. I didn't have any locking compound for the nuts so I used my wife's nail polish! Did I mention I love my wife! The modification was amazing it threw the snow about double the distance. No clogs in the heavy stuff, no build up in the housing. I've told everyone I know to check it out on KZbin! Thanks!

dude this is great, woke my wife just to tell her lol i was a little excited... Last year in kansas city was horrible on my snow blower, ever 2 min I had to stop and unclog. Going out today to look for parts and the best part as you mentioned in your other vid, it can be salvaged for free...never once have I thought to do that, so simple but effective...thanks for sharing

First time since I made the modification that it has snowed here in southern Maine/NH boarder. A wet, slushy snow. My toro killed it! No clogging at all. Plus it actually threw the stuff! AND it threw it (wet slush) ten-15 feet. It threw the snow about 30 feet. WHat a fricken difference! Very cool, very easy and cheap. BTW-I was not going at the slowest speed-regular speed. I did this to my 1978 Craftsman 24 inch Eager 1, 17 or 18 years ago. I was getting tired of it clogging and spitting slush on top of it's self so I cut mine out of a sidewall of a car tire. With the rubber kind of cupped, it will literally pump water about 8 to 10 feet and it has never clogged since. You will also notice the difference in the engine sound too, before my 7hp. would hardly work but now you can here the engine working even in nice powder. I still use it with the same paddles I made all those years ago.

Gwdave here, I did this mod early in the summer.... I have had a couple of light snow falls that were wet... We just picked up about 4" of kind of wet snow, and along the road where the snow plow left the melted real wet snow from the chemicals I tried to plug up my 2 year old TROY..... I could not plug it up no even a little bit... I had to get in to some snow in the yard to remove the wet stuff from the inside of the blower so I could put it away....... Real neat mod, and I tell every one I know to do this mod it is worth it............

Great idea...after I watched this I went and checked my Husqusvarna and to my delight there is almost no clearance..they actually designed it to performed that same way your mod does...it never clogs...so far haha...cheers and greetings from Ontario Canada

The gap gets bigger with use as the housing stretches and the impeller blades start to bend. They're usually good when brand new with a minor 1/8" gap.

Yes I did this to my old Toro 724 with Tecumseh 8Hp That I installed after blowing up original motor. It literately throws 3 times as far! I got the idea originally from you and finally did it this year (The worst year for snow in 10 years) Yep I am a happy camper. However I must confess I bought a kit which made the project so easy. Because of where I am located getting suitable rubber was an issue. So I just bit the bullet and bought a kit! However I heard it here first! Thanks again!

I did this mod last winter. I was ready to get rid of my 8:hP mtd for a higher hp model. Thought I'd try this first....Man am I glad I did!! Works awesome!! When my neighbors are all clogging up..I'm still chugging along ! Things you'll need.... 1)Rubber at least a 1/4" thick- cut into 2 1/2" wide by 3" deep. 2)Self tapping screws 1" long and washers( very important) -keeps head of screw accessible in case you have to remove it one day... 3) remove shoot from machine 4)predrill the rubber with 2 holes going front to back 5) put rubber on impeller then use your drill to basically Mark where your screws will go... 6)pre drill pilot hole in impeller for self tapping screws ( I used a narrow step down bit) 7) attach rubber with self tapping screw with washer...let it poke through the rubber so it'll be easy to find the predrilled holes. 8) secure it down...spin impeller and do the next blade. Good luck...It's super easy to do! 9) let it snow and be amazed at your new machine !!

joe DiMemmo : I have a 8HP MTD with Tecumseh engine. It has 3 blades on the impeller. By putting the paddles on, doesn’t it leave a non-smooth exit surface to throw the snow? Or that doesn’t matter? I can’t mount them on the back side of the blade. Did you make the paddle fit the curve of the blade (it curves upward at the outer edge). @@es52 You don't put it on the curved outer edge. Only put them on the leading edge as it will pull off it put on the back side. Even if you leave a 1/4" ridge from the rubber, snow will immediately fill it in.

@@danh1202 Some machines (Toro etc) have a higher grade of steel for the impeller and the self tapping screws have a harder time. Drilling a hole is the remedy. It's just a tight area to be working so generally use hex shank drill bits that I can put into a screw bit adapter for extra reach.

Thanks for the vid. Just modified my 1990 Craftsman 5/23 blower. Picked up free floor tile samples at big box store and #10 self tapping screws for $.99. Tested it on the snow on our yard and I'd say 3xs as far for sure! Easy mod. Huge difference. Hopefully the tile will hold up. Thanks again for your video.

I am going to do this the next time I service the blower! I was clearing a friends driveway last night that was about 10" of heavy wet snow left over from the 20" we got over the weekend and it was having lots of trouble throwing the snow more then a couple feet.

Thanks, this works very well, instead of buying a mud flap, I bought a plumbers band aid, which joins two pieces of cast iron pipe together. This is 1/4" thick, very pliable rubber, it is round but it I cut it in half with a chop saw and then again the long way. This gives you four pieces 1 3/4" wide and two surplus hose clamps, total cost with self tapping screws and fender washers less then $10.

Just installed 3 paddles made from an old boat trailer tire on my MTD Yard Machine 8hp snow blower. 2- #10 screws/washers w/lock nuts on each paddle. Started it up & they worn in just right. I gave the paddles their first test tonight after I got home from work. They throw the snow between 25 - 30 feet, and with a fully re-built carb that I did last spring (thanks to your video), I got it done myself, all I had to do was buy the re-build kit plus a new float (parts less than 30 bucks). :)

I added the rubber pads to my snowblower. I had them too close to the side so I had to adjust because impeller was stuck. I also replaced the auger belt. I will also use DuPont snow and ice on the auger,impeller and chute. No more clogging. Can’t wait to test it out!

Now that was a lot of work, just to do a comparison video, so allow me to say thank you. The proof is always in the pudding and you've certainly proved your point. I shortened the stack on my wood chipper to alleviate clogging but your way works even better. Oh and yes, my chipper will take your arm off at both intake and exhaust. Yikes, but she sure chips wood even up to 4 inches with just a little 25 hp tractor.

Great tip and such an easy attachment shown on the other video. I call those tapping screws; Zap screws or zip screws. I used them in the sign shop to connect the facia sheet metal of an outdoor sign to the support frame.

Just completed the installation...bought the 4" wide belting at Tractor Supply...$16.97. Got about 10 feet left after installation on the 3 paddles. Home Depot didn't have anything that would work for the 'rubber' part. Had to DRILL holes through the belting AND 'paddles' to use #8 x 3/4" Philips Head 'self tapping'...which they weren't. Lined up the drilled holes and 'paddles' with an awl. Took about 2 1/2 hours to complete. Nice Saturday 'project'. Oh sure...then I notice that my SHOE SKIDS 24279 needed replacing...ordered them at SEARS Direct for $5.09 each. Bought 4...for $27.94 including shipping and local tax. They had them on the website for $7.43 but their website gave me an intermediate price of $5.09 on 'some window' right before I checked out. Used a CHAT with Sears Parts Direct and they honored the $5.09 price. Good on ya SEARS! So...I bought 4 knowing that the SNOW will never end. BTW...you've kept me busy today. Also did the Garage Door Opener anti-theft solution.!

Romeo Whiskey Actually was able to PLOW this morning. Snow thrower throws it MORE than 8 feet than without the enhancements. Also...seems like the enhancements were sufficient to CLEAR the ICE COLUMN of wet snow when they did occur. Results: 9 out of 10! I'd recommend it to others to do.

I was in the gutter a little to long, the paddles never bogged down, only a small blockage, I started throwing some powder snow & that cleared out like a champ & nothing bogged down. :)

Absolutely cool! I just came into my shop with a totally impacted two-stage Honda HS928 ten HP and sat down on my laptop while I have a fan on it to melt the snow. I WAS trying to use a silicone spray, hoping the snow would slip by. Not very mechanically inclined but I am pretty sure I can follow your instructions. Thanks a million!

@@sixtyfiveford I did this with my older Honda HS80 no problem. Haven't had chance to try it yet. But my newer 928 is out of the question. Impeller must be tempered. All I did was chew up self tapping screws and drill bits.

Made the mod to my Arien's 926LE which was clogging up regularly in the 6" of super wet snow here in NJ. A bit of a job since the impeller blades are too thick for self threading screws so it makes it somewhat of a chore to correctly attach the rubber paddles lightly against the impeller housing (I ended up having to trim them back some to ease up on the drag). Also, any deficiencies in your accessory drive belt will be magnified due to increased drag( you may have to adjust it if it's worn ) until the paddles wear some. Otherwise it does as advertised...thanks!

I went to the local power equipment store to get a drive belt and I asked if they had any of the used paddles like you have. I lucked out and they had a couple and they gave them to me. I gave the girl a tip because she had to go garbage diving to find them. So I am going to do your mod! I am still waiting for that gear, they said it should get here Monday. Of course we are going to get dumped on Monday with another big snow.

After watching your other video on this modification i did it to my craftsman snow blower and it throws the snow at least twice as far and does not clog up ever. it used to clog up a lot. Going to do the same to my dads snow blower next. Thanks for the tip.

Great vid! I just picked up a 1993 toro 724. The gap is pretty close already but I think I'll get me some rubber and make some paddles before I try it out. Thank you for posting this video. You would think that the manufacturers of these machines would have figured this out already and been making them this way at least within the last few years.

I bought end piece of conveyor belt material for 25 bucks. about 8 ft long and 3 ft wide. so far I have made 3 sets of paddles for single stages and done 3 modifications to 2-stages. I made templates on 1/8 / 1/4 in ply wood. took a compass and added 1" to the old paddle. then added an extra hole so they could push the paddle in towards the middle so when the paddle wears you can move paddle out to the next hole and keep on truckin. then when that edge wears out add another hole. I used a brad point wood drill bit and it made a really nice hole on the side of the paddle that the shank/hub of the bolt goes on.

Sixtyfiveford.I am writing on your KZbin because you were the first one I saw and seem maybe not the first but one of the ones?I have an old early 1970's Snotrac 20/5 with a 5 hp Tecumseh.Rebuilt the whole thing carb and all from the ground up but the engine as it cannot be killed and starts first pull every time.Anyway, I had to try it and it wasn't easy putting in the tire sidewalls as the blades are almost 3/8" thick steel and rubber 1/4" but with good stainless nuts, bolts, washers and lock washers, Man!It runs just as in your video, so much so that I have to keep the chute down about half way for the most part now as before it was up all the way and shooting like in your video. (just a dud!)All I can say is thanks for sharing this with us and also for those of you doing this, please make sure that a safe installation is done as these are very fast moving parts with a lot of force and injuries can happen if not done properly and balancing the parts as best as possible is not a bad idea, but ya! it works and works well!Next Summer is a new exterior finish, no not paint job but preserve it with clear, rust and all even on the chrome.A few more years, the old girl will be a Vintage machine!Was a fun and useful project Sixtyfiveford, Thanks again!

I did this to my Murray. The impeller blades already had a 5/16 hole in the middle. I bought some nuts, bolt washers and drilled a center hole in the paddle. I installed them. Will let you know how it goes.

Paddles help a lot. I spray an oil inside too. Next time, sacrifice a plastic kitchen cooking spoon; if it gets eaten you're out a dollar instead of a finger.

sixtyfiveford so I did the mod. Didn't have rubber but I had a semi-soft plastic sheet and used that to make the paddles. Mine is an MTD yard machine and has a 3 wing impeller and annoying rivets in the bell but I figured, eh they'll wear down the plastic paddles as it spins. Think I gave everyone on the street a heart attack when I fired it up hahaha! Stayed major noisy for a loooong time. Still is. I might have to go back in there with a Dremel if they don't chamfer soon. Damn rivets. Why put them there? The thing's an animal though. This mod should be awesome. Thank you again.

Finally, going to install paddles. My Sears 9 horse 2 stage has a 3 blade impeller. I'm thinking of installing 3 paddles, unless you see a concern. I added "drift cutters" because where the driveway meets the street, I get 3 feet of wet snow from the snow plow. I spend more time blowing out the end of the drive than I do on the whole driveway because of the clogging. Again, great idea.

Yeah, put it on all 3 to keep it balanced. Working on your snow blower in the warm weather is always better than in the middle of winter.

The Sears Craftsman 9 horse has a bend or cup shape to each impeller blade. The steel is also thicker, so 15 min. turned into 2 hours. I used new rubber from a single stage snow blower. I also noticed the fit has to be made for the chamber underneath and not the chute. We ran it and the rubber and fabric flew out as it wore in. OK, now I wait for snow.

I like the idea of the paddles. Going to have to do that to mine. I wax my snowblower including the auger and impeller, then during the winter I will spray the chute and impeller with PAM no stick spray

That does help clogging. The paddles have the added benefit of increasing your throwing distance.

I was given an old Toro 521 by my father-in-law, it works but 5hp is a little weak. I'm going to repower it with a 11hp Honda that's I have sitting in the barn. Between 11hp, 3x torque, adding paddles to the impeller, and the Honda is a higher RPM then the Tecumseh H50 I should have one hell of a 21" snow blower. Thanks for the comparison video.

The Honda and Tecumseh will run at the same RPM(3600rpm max) but you will have more power than you can imagine. You may even want to put a slightly larger pulley on the engine to increase the RPM that the impeller turns.

sixtyfiveford I forgot to put in that the governor is stuck on the Tecumseh (on the inside of the block) and it can not run over 2700rpm on a surge normally 2400rpm at "full throttle". I've already got a slightly larger pulley lined up from my brother. He calculated it should add between 400 to 450 rpm to the impeller.
