Snow Blower Only Has One Gear/ Only Goes One Direction - FIXED

This Yard Machine by MTD 826 snow blower with an 8hp Tecumseh engine would only go forward in one gear, regardless of where the transmission shifter was placed. It would not go in reverse at all. This is a common problem which can effect any made or model snow blower. The issue usually lies in the linkage or drive wheel assembly

Thanks, this is very informative. My lower has one speed in forward and one in reverse. It’s a master craft, will have a look soon but this gives me a good starting point

I had an interesting situation on a machine I found in the trash recently. The hex shaft was so gummed up with grease that the friction will what's still slowly moving into position after you've picked a gear. This would actually cause reverse one to go in forward if you had shifted into it from any of the forward gears. Basically engaging reverse one immediately after shifting from a forward speed was stopping the friction wheel while it was still traveling. After cleaning in lubrication the problem underway and it was actually much easier to change gears.

I have no need for a snow blower in Western WA but I am enjoying watching simple in comparison equipment to my winter motorcycle projects. I might do some old mowers again. Doing an easy one an old DT 100 but as soon as the machined parts come back it’s time to get back to the full custom 400 and the wheel spacers that have been messing with me on chain alignment for a month. Hard to get custom machine work done at this point.

Nice dude! I had an old Yamaha DT when I was a teenager. it was a 2 stroke, but was the size of the little Honda XL Enduros was a fun bike. Wish I never sold it

It's also important to grease the shaft so the shifter can slide easier on it. That one looks way too dry. And clean off the metal plate will help it work much better. You never want to get any lube on the metal drive plate or rubber wheel, ever.

Ok i am off work and looking at my blower. Same machine in video the gear shift lever does move its jus really hard. Also i noticed the little spring down in front of the 2 belts is broke. Any insight

My speed selector brokes on my yardman 12-33 its not the same as yours i try to figure out how to fix it but i dont get it
