I worked for the highway department on the willamette pass in the cascade mountains blowing and plowing snow for 32 years. We would average 40 feet of snow a winter and 30 years ago i ran a blower like this that was called a snow go. No power steering ,a heater that didnt work very well and was the roughest riding noisey machine ive ever operated in the 32 years of running snow removal equipment. The last machine i ran was called a norland snow blower from Norway. Amazing machine that was all air ride,power everything and even had a great stereo in it. I told the younger guys that they have no idea how easy they have it now compared to what we had 30 years ago.

I have seen what a fleet of those snowblowers does to an airfield that needs to be opened in a snowstorm. I have also seen what they can do to runway lights, garbafe cans, bicyckes and other things hiding in the snow... Nice video work... Your explanation of the localizer was very good. I wonder what causes it to shift during winter months? I enjoyed the old snow blower action, as well. Well done!
@jens_ru Жыл бұрын
The problem is the snow itself. The localizer works with radio signals that can be reflected if the snow is to high. That might lead to a so called localizer misalignment. When this happens the ILS System of the approaching plane does not show the correct position of the runway on the Instruments. In a landing with poor visibility the plane might end before, behind or besides the runway. In 2019 there was an accident with an Embraer that was caused by this (among other things).
@johnniewelbornjr.8940 Жыл бұрын
@@jens_ru I've flown such approaches before but never thought about how much snow can reflect the signal. Thanks!
@someoneelse7629 Жыл бұрын
The snow (or moisture) "pulls" the lobe of the radio beam from the antenna in the wrong direction, making it show the wrong position, there has been accidents where people has been following the ILS and it turns out they are besides the runway due to a ILS error
@MrTommyboy6811 ай бұрын
I was stationed at Plattsburgh AFB in northern New York in the mid to late 70's. Every time it snowed, FIRST PRIOROTY: Clear the run ways. SECOND PRIORITY: Clear the runways. THIRD PRIORITY: Clear the runways. Well, they would push the snow until they couldn't push it any further. My first winter there, I asked why they didn't contact NY DOT and find out where they bought their snowblowers that were mounted on the front of dump trucks instead of plows. And in typical military fashion, they said they would be too expensive. OK, you have 10's of millions of dollars of aircraft sitting there and you waste so much time trying to push snow around instead of spending $2 or $3 hundred thousand dollars (if that much, they already had the dump trucks) for 3 or 4 snow blowers and clear the runways in no time, reducing the stress on the wing commander (mission readiness and all that rot). They never did follow my suggestions and continued to have fits every time it snowed. I was a medic so it didn't matter to me if the runways were cleared quickly or not.
@dtiydr21 сағат бұрын
1:53 Ok I had no idea you could steer these without the steering wheel and manage the front at the same time! But I guess this is a very modern version, but still and its so cool.
@Look_What_I_Did Жыл бұрын
Very important to keep snow cleared from the localizer. Pilots should be fine without it... but as always. Mankind has proven that not to be the case. 22:23 That antenna should not be moving unintentionally. That is a significant issue.
@annaplojharova1400 Жыл бұрын
The question is, whether it is really the antenna what is moving, or whether the actual field is being distorted by something around that monitor antenna. To me the second would be even worse, as it may mean the field to be exactly centered at the runway itself, but off at the approach...
@Look_What_I_Did Жыл бұрын
@@annaplojharova1400 Snow can and does affect near field antennas. Very well known and understood phenomenon. Clearing the snow should be adequate. The FAA updated the regs requiring the distance the snow is to be cleared.
@annaplojharova1400 Жыл бұрын
@@Look_What_I_Did But I understood it as the antenna "had to be moved" from its "other season" position even after the "snow was cleared". So there either is something else at play (ground humidity, vegetation,...), or the residual layer of snow just underneath the transmitter. Well I hope the pattern gets checked from the air as well (when people landing VFR, they are still checking instruments and so will report any eventual mismatch...), so would be fixed before really causing big problem...
