Super cosy and relaxing video today - thank you for sharing it with us! By way of thanks, I have a really easy and delicious butternut soup recipe for you, from my family here in Scotland! Cut a butternut squash in half lengthways and scrape out the seeds with a spoon. Dot with butter and place cut side up in a baking tray in a medium-hot oven for, say, 45 minutes or so - the squash should be soft and browned. While the squash is roasting, peel and cut up a couple of large potatoes (this recipe is super forgiving, just use whatever you have!) and put on to boil in a pot of chicken or vegetable stock until tender. When the squash is out of the oven and cooled enough, remove the skin and cut the flesh into chunks. Add to the pot of cooked potatoes and stock, and blend with a stick blender until smooth, or transfer to your Vitamix to blitz, then return back to the pan. Add some cream to the soup and gently heat through before tasting for seasoning, adding salt and black pepper if desired, and serving - it’s great with roasted seeds or a sprinkle of shredded cheese on top! I often add a good sprinkle of ginger or nutmeg to the stock before cooking the potatoes, but I’ve been known to add garlic too. You can also add any other root vegetables you have lying around to the stock to cook with the potatoes - I’ve used carrots and parsnips before, and it was still great. It’s very simple but so warming and delicious, perfect for snow days. I hope you give it a try and let me know if you enjoy it as much as we do!

Midwest has the best of all seasons! Frozen pipes here can break and flood closets, house, and homes so we must keep the heat inside no less than 68. I feel cold around 72. Can certainly understand not using space heaters with small children. Contractors insulate our pipes here -there may be new ways of doing that now-especially if pipes are near outside walls. Very sympathetic to the toilet flushing. Wonder if hot water might help? The South sure seems to be getting more cold weather than I remember and more tornadoes, too. As always love your creativity. I lived in NJ until I was in my 50's. I forgot all about leaving the water dripping and frozen pipes. I have been living in South Florida for about 15 years and don't miss the bitter cold and everything that comes with it at all. Now that I am thinking about it, I used to put a small electric space heater in the basement next to where the main water pipe came into the house. Keeping that area warm seemed to help avoid the frozen pipes.

It must be so nice and warm in south Florida right now!

My niece lives in Haslet, Tx and says it's crazy cold. We here in the Los Angeles area are getting a nice cold rain storm. Much needed precipitation! I never complain about rain, we need it so much. And our mountain community needs the snow for their economy. Love, love, love your head scarf and shirt color. Yay, green💚 My mother-in-law used to make chicken soup with pasta. Simple, hearty fare that brings back memories of cozy suppers with family. It was so sweet that Baby Firefly got to be alone in the fort to explore. Once the big kids descend upon it the vibe will change. Great Mama Bears think of building forts and doing freezing cold walks for their cubs. Chana is a Great Mama Bear! Warm hugs! 🤗😘

It's a good thing you know how to manage with the toilets not functioning 100%. I loved seeing the kids' footprints in the snow next to the rabbit paw prints. Soup sounds so good. My favorite soup I ever ate was at a pub in Scotland -- potato leek soup. But I have never made it. I do enjoy chicken noodle soup with lots and lots of noodles.

After reading a few of the comments here, I’m feeling rather blessed in Montana. It’s been in the mid 40’s for a week and snow has melted. Yay! We all love potato soup, any veg soup with cabbage (sort of a ‘clean out the leftovers’ concoction). Also love wild rice in soup. I tried your spaghetti bake last week and it was a hit. For sure, its a repeat. Thanks so much for the recipe. Stay warm.

I'm from Pennsylvania, and according to our winters, that would definitely be classified as snow. There are so many textures of snow, sometimes slushy, sometimes heavy and kind of wet (we call it a bushbender - great for making snowmen) and then sometimes gritty like you have now. Who would think that Texas is having the same kind of weather that we Pennsylvanians are having!! Have fun in it!🥰

Northern(ish) Canada here...had to switch the weather app to farenheit to get some prospective...we also get "feel like" temps because of the moisture in the air combined with the wind....it'll be a balmy -9 (-23C) at night. Our house is thankfully winterproof (but definitely still need the wool socks and sweaters) but my barn not so much...so I still deal with all the water woes - not fun!! Frozen toes and frozen nose everywhere I go!

It's not so bad here in NE Wisconsin, this past wk was very cold, but that's pretty normal for January here. You just have to bundle up more if you're going to be outside for more than a few minutes. Most people have pretty heavy & warm winter jackets, hats, gloves/mittens & the essential boots & snow pants get worn any time I need to shovel outside. Hope it warms up for you soon.

10 Fahrenheit = -12 Celsius that is cold for Texas! I live in Canada, that is cold for us as well but we don't have the freezing problem with the pipes because we are used to the temperature & we even get colder temperatures. To stay warm I dress warm, go out only when I need to we keep the temperature in our home between 20 - 22 Celsius.

Do you have a bird feeder for the children to watch. It's fun to see which birds eat seeds, peanuts, or suet. For soups I like borscht and Italian wedding soup. Borscht is great for warming up, and you can change it to suit your family. I live in Red Deer, Canada which is on the prairies. Last week was brutal her. It got down to -48C which made it -60C with wind chill. Way too cold for me. I think that is around -55 and -76. We stayed inside and curled up with fuzzy blankets and watched videos.

As someone who lives in a place that averages 130" of snow a year and can get as low as -40 (without the wind chill) a tip for keeping pipes from freezing, if they are in a cupboard that can be left open to allow your house heat in that really helps! and anytime my washer/dishwasher has frozen I just put a space heater near by on low and can usually use it again in a few hours.

Hi Chana! Nothing like good soups or chili's when the cold comes calling! It got quite cold here in Florida also, so a pot of turkey chili got made and warmed us up from the inside. I hope everything defrosts okay without any damage. I remember loving snow days as a child, but as I got older and colder my fondness for snow and ice has completely disappeared! Hence the move to Florida! Stay warm and safe, and as always a pleasure to watch and learn....
