I spent a night in very simple snow cave high in the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. I simply dug into the snow that had accumulated on the lee slope. After digging about 4 feet into the snow, I hit the ground, so I made a 90 degree right turn and dug out a tunnel of about 6 feet. The tunnel was higher than the entrance. That night, there were high winds and the temperature dropped to about minus 20 Fahrenheit. Inside I slept in a minus 20 degree NorthFace Polargard sleeping bag inside a Goretex bivy sack. The bivy sack was great due to the melting snow dripping on me all night. It was very calm and pleasant inside despite the high wind and frigid temperatures outside. I spent the night with the sleeping bag unzipped and me half out. I believe that I could have been fine with a plus 30 degree Fahrenheit bag. It was a very enjoyable experience.

The truth. Well. (Expect the really strong instinct , that is...) Anyway. To make a shelter in this kind of cold, is just impressive. It is hard to phantom how cold it really is, without standing in it for a while. It can be really cold in Norway to , espesially some places. I have felt how it is so cold it is hard to breath, and even the lashes freezes to ice . But still...To sleep in that type of could...

My older brother and I used to build snow forts (shelters) all the time. The hardest part was finding the right materials to give the fort (shelter) enough structure to not collapse during the night. The temperature differential of -20F outside and +20F inside always made them sag. The best one we ever had was arranging some dead standing into a teepee and then piling snow in circles up to the top. It took hours to build but held together for months.

Right. Spooning others or dogs help big time. I learned in the Marines that's it not gay to get 3 or 4 Marines under a wool blanket to stay warm in freezing temperatures.
