Side jumping also puts ruts in the jump. Its just more unnecessary work for the park crew. Also, don't bring your toddler to the park please. Its ABSOLUTELY THE WORST when some ski dad tries to bring their little kid through the park. It's dangerous for both the kid and the park rats. Idk how many arguments I've gotten into with parents who don't understand this concept.

I think more people need to speak up. I hear sooo many people complaining about it, but stay mute when they see it happening. Yell off the lift, yell behind them, yell next to them, yell yell yell or go up to them straight up and explain to them that what they are doing is dangerous and that they are ruining the rail ramps for people actually hitting the feature. Then again, it’s Keystone. I saw a ski instructor actually teaching his class side hit the rail ramps. Boy, did I educate that dude.

Before hitting a larger jump make sure you watch someone else to get an idea of the speed you need to hit it. Conditions can change multiple times a day and you never want to come up short or overshoot! Also if you dont want to yell when waiting to drop just put your hand up, its a good way to mark who's going in a crowd. Great video team huckhouse! Terrain park safety is something i tried to enforce heavily as ski patrol back home, no one wants their fun day ruined by an injury!

4:33 another reason why side jumping is a bad idea is that it changes the shape of the actual jump onto the rail. When people are hitting the jump normally, it creates a divot that makes it easier for other riders to hit the jump properly. If you hit the jump from the side, it can destroy that divot and actually make the feature harder to hit for other people

Something to add, if there are multiple rails in a line you shouldn't hit one then stop in front of the next one to set up for it if the park is crowded. People are going to be following you and will want to ride the line all the way through, not have to stop in between each rail

Good video. I wish people would have to watch something like this before going into the park. Another good tip: If you have little kids and they aren't good enough to be in the park, don't bring them in the park if it's busy. Wait until it's slow and just bring them into the smaller parks. If I land on an adult doing something stupid I'm not going to feel that bad for the person. If I land on some kid...I'm gonna feel bad. Had a few close calls like that. No fun.

Another rule is that if you are just learning how to snowboard or ski, the park area isn't an area you shouldn't be in. I see a lot of people that can barely make a turn going into the park. Also for the parents out there. Don't take your kid into the park area if you and your kid has no intention using the park features. I've seen far to many close call accidents happen because parents think it's ok to make laps in the park with their kid and not hit one feature.

Love the videos! I have a question/video idea:) What’s the best approach to learn new tricks? Get a lesson? Ride with a better boarder? Just go for it? Is there a specific trick progression or feature progression a snowboarder should follow? I’m new to park riding, so I’m wondering what to hit and what to do after. Keep up the great videos!
@hunterpercentsnowboarding3840

A lesson should be able to answer all of those questions for you in person. Riding with someone better than you is the best way to learn. Get comfortable doing freestyle tricks like ollies nollies presses 180s and 360s around the mountain before going into the park! 🤙

@3:55 Another great thing if you can't stand on the jump to close it, is to: Take off your board and put it upside down ~1/2 way up the take off OR with skis: Push your tails into the snow in the shape of an "X" ~1/2 up the takeoff.

Another reason to avoid side jumping rail and box approaches is that you can throw off the approach with unaligned tracks. If it’s not being raked by park crew all the time (which it won’t be) this can be an issue and make it way harder to hit the rail properly which can cause the likelihood for other riders to get injured to rise.

Another note for side jumping the rail lips: if you do that, you dig into the snow and carve a line that is not natural to hitting the feature, which messes up the lead up for anyone actually trying to hit that rail

At 5:45 you mention Hyland Hills. Thats the park I always go to. It's really fun, however, I can agree with you that many people like to sit on features. Many people also stand right next to features which doesn't allow you to do past some features if you don't want to hit it. We also really don't have an order there. One day, we had like 10 people going off of jumps at once. It was insane and we were lucky to not get hurt.

Jumping off the sides of rail features is also dangerous for the future people riding it, when you go to get onto a feature there is a carve line towards the feature with the right angle. If someone goes off the side of the lip in the afternoon say, the person that has been hitting that feature all day could then hurt themselves next hit because the lip is completely different
@jordifolch4832
@jordifolch4832 3 жыл бұрын
Thats the biggest thing for me, expecially on days with soft snow because leaving a carve line that doesnt go straight onto the feature can really mess with somebody else who hits it after you

Agree 100%. Question? How many people do you yell at or say something to , when you see that happening? I say something every time and sometimes I’m the one getting the dirty looks then. The only way this terrible trend is going to end, is if park riders start being more vocal when they see these things happening. Shit, I yell off the lift at people doing that.

You gained a subscriber man! I’m really nervous about parks, I’m way more of a downhill skier, but want to move onto twin tips for park stuff I can board at an okay level - I could get down from the top of the hill to the bottom but slowly and maybe with a few falls. Never been to a resort in North America, but it’s on the bucket list!

Bro great video! As someone just starting in the park I do make the effort to follow etiquette. I’ve already experienced people following me to close or hitting a feature damn near on my tail and I actually wrecked hard at T line last week coming off a box when a dude shot out of the trees(under a rope mind you) and cut in front of my landing area. It scared the s#!t out of me and I panicked lol. I landed on my shoulder and hip. Thankfully I just got bruised up a little. If it had been firm snow my old a$$ hip would have shattered hahaha 🤣. I don’t think you could make to many etiquette videos honestly.

Do a vid explaining detuning edges... I detune all my edges except my right heel edge and my front left edge (like 5-6” befor the edge slopes upwards to the nose of the board... that way you can still jib and never catch an edge.... and if you need to pull the “E-Break” and stop fast.... your right heel edge is sharp and you can stop on a dime (regular stance rider) I tried this experiment a couple seasons ago, and was extremely pleased with the outcome. (I live in Utah, so we don’t deal with Ice hardly ever, but I’ve definitely ruined a new deck (that was given to me) by detuning the edges too much.... and they couldn’t be resharpened:( that’s when I came up with the above detuning method. But everyone has there own preferences. Just thought someone might like a tip from a Utah snowboard Bum. Surfs Up!🤙
