Days don't get much better. Just released from lockdown, I took my youngest son on only his second gyrocopter flight through the beautiful Llangollen valley then over the moors to Portmeirion, before climbing up the Rhyd Ddu path to the summit of Mount Snowdon, the highest point in Wales. It was eerily quiet on top as Wales remained in lockdown. We flew over the ridge and down into the Glaslyn bowl, before returning via Moel Siabod.

Hi Stu, Karl here living in NZ but still missing the scenery of old blighty! Love your videos as they are much better than most on KZbin as you give a great narrative which keeps you waiting for more info about the flying area. This area in the video is special to me for many reasons, but mainly to do with family. Is there a private address I can contact you on? Will see if you are on FB and try and link in that way-Cheers

Oh excellent - keep these coming. Love seeing the NW (I was born and brought up on the Wirral). Once all this is over I think I'll be taking this up as a hobby. Know any good instructors in Devon?

Superb, was hoping at the end when you we're flying over it you'd follow the three peaks trail to llandegla as I used to regularly ride that on my dirt bike , think I've even done a vid years ago , and was also hoping for a montage at the end of all his pics , haha nice one stu.

@@StuWithAView We'll have to try to coordinate a flight into Caernarfon when we next get a good day's weather. I'd love to come over the Peak District and transit Manchester while it's still quiet.

At 15:33 it looks like you’re trailing something, or perhaps spitting oil. I sometimes find oil spatter on the tail after a flight. The only time I ever see the oil get warm enough to be thin enough for the oil-pressure to be below the top of the green is during warm-up on the ground, though, so I find it interesting that it would vent in flight from time to time. I’ve even got a little plastic bottle on the end of the vent-pipe to catch the drips, but I still get spatter.

It happens throughout the flight. I noticed it immediately on first edit and discussed with my engineer. This was a MAUW flight on a 28C day climbing to 4,000 feet; he assured me it’s entirely normal in these conditions, and is apparently mainly water vapour. There was a negligible drop in my oil level when I next checked at the start of the next flight. I flew a subsequent flight with cameras pointing at the oil breather pipe (this is where it’s emanating from) on a cooler day with just me on board and there was no visible gas trail.

StuWithAView - I think I need to do a few hard flights... Both myself and my wife (my regular passenger) are not exactly heavy and my engine runs very cold. From what I’ve been told, it’s good to run the engine “hot” from time to time to drive the water out of the oil. But... yeah... It’s normal and as I said, I often have a little bit of spatter on my tail and when I was doing unusual attitudes in training, I would sometimes smell hot oil (in the nose-high situation)... but this is the first time I’ve actually seen video “evidence” of it happening. If we were to route our breather pipes to exit at our exhaust pipes, we’d have smoke trails... Hmmmmm... now there’s a thought... ;)

In winter in Australia I put some Velcro straps around my oil cooler 2 x 50mm to warm the oil does help

I used to do this, until one day the straps failed and went straight through the prop...

what is the gyro that you are flying? How many miles can it fly on a good day and a bad day. How many gallons does it hold? Where could i get one?

It’s a Rotor Sport MT-03. Endurance is around 4 hours from total fuel of 70 litres at an airspeed of around 80mph; how far you cover over the ground depends on wind speed. Availability depends on where you’re based.
