So the Cessna 182 has been sold, and here is its replacement - a bright yellow tailwheel Eurofox. Having not flown it for 6 weeks, and not much before that, it was time for a familiarisation flight down at Sleap, including circuits, practice slipping (not my strong point) and a bit of sightseeing.

First take off I thought I was watching a helicopter! Light as a feather and amazing ability to float into the air. Looks like great fun.

It goes up like a rocket 😊 But it doesn’t want to come back down again... it’s very slippery. But it is great fun 👍

Hi Stu, lovely little aeroplane, quite a change from the gyro, on the subject of gyros, did another two lessons yesterday, ( over The Black Isle), a passing shower of rain created a fully circular rainbow, something you don't see from the ground, it was quite windy, the gyro doesn't care, but I bet the fixed-wing guys were feeling it, anyway stay safe, all the best from Scotland, Stephen.

Sounds good Stephen. As you say, gyros are great in windy conditions. My wife has family in that part of the world so I know the Black Isle. Enjoy the training 😊

One of the reasons we sold the 182 and replaced it with the Fox is that it’s so much cheaper to fly and maintain.

Sorry that the 182 has gone it was a lovely and well equipped aircraft but I do love the Eurofox - quite a few of them at my airfield and used by our neighbouring glider site as a tug. Hope you're enjoying it and I'm sure keeping the Gyro straight on landing has helped in your tail wheel conversion. Keep safe!

I’m still a bit sad too Jason; it was a lovely aircraft and I do miss it. But the Fox is more agile, more fun to fly and much, much cheaper to run. I’ve seen a few as glider tugs, which made us keen to check this one had no such history! And as you say, the gyro is a great teacher of the need to use the pedals when on the ground or just above it!

There was a time when I feared I might get confused between my various flying machines; but when you’re actually sat there they each feel unique. I just hope that’s still the case should an emergency ever occur...

@@StuWithAView - Well, when I’m driving my car, I’ve never tried to steer with my feet ! However... Whilst taxiing during one of my first lessons, my instructor told me to brake. And then again, a little more insistently... then I said, “Ooops! We don’t have toe-brakes !”. I’d become used to flying my simulator (which does have toe-brakes) and instinctively tried to use them (even though I did know how to use the hand-brake on the gyro). I’ve not done it since, though.

You don't need much more as 100 feet to take of, that is impressive ! What speed at 4500 rpm ?

Maybe 100m. 4500 would give around 90-95 knots. I tend to run at 4800-5000 for about 100.

Thanks Stuart, nice video. Can I ask how you mount the Gopro on the P1 wing strut? From what I can see it looks like a Flight Flix Rock Steady. I used one of those on the aluminium strut of a Skyranger, but thought the same was not possible on my Eurofox. The strut is a steel tube with a shaped plastic sleeve and I thought it would be too unstable. You have achieved most impressive results. I am amazed at the pan action too! how do you do that? Nothing wrong with a yellow Eurofox. Looking forward to getting back in the air soon. All the best

Thank you Dennis. It is indeed the Rock Steady flightflix.net/product/rock-steady-strut-skid-gopro-ball-mount-steel-strap/ - it fits the Eurofox very well; you just cut the steel strap to fit. The pan action is down to using a 360 GoPro Max and then editing the footage down to 1080p widescreen. Yes it would be very nice to get back flying sometime soon - I am so not current!

Well done, Stuart. For your first tail wheel airplane you are doing great. I have the same plane and same color in the US, but here they call them Aerotreks. They are excellent airplanes and quite versatile as well as low operating costs. How does your Bose headset work in your Eurofox? I’ve been thinking about getting one.

Thank you Greg. I haven’t flown for 4 months due to lockdown restrictions in the UK; first flight booked for next week - feels like I’ll be learning all over again. The Bose A20 is an excellent headset and the ANR was very effective in the C182 I had before the Eurofox; that aircraft had decent door seals so the interior noise was more engine than slipstream. In the Eurofox the ANR is less effective against the higher slipstream noise due to the door gaps. Still good; just not as good. I doubt any other ANR set would be better; they’re really better against lower pitch engine noise than the mid-pitch airstream.

@@StuWithAView Stuart, Thanks for the Bose report. I’ve heard good things about them, but you’re the first Eurofox PIREP I’ve received. Looks like I will be ordering one soon. Good luck on your first flight in 4 months. I’m sure it will all come back quite fast.

That looks like an awesome aircraft! As a tall pilot at 6’03” do you think I would be able to fit? I would love to see one up close. I am based out of Elstree.

I think you might be OK. The canopy curves over the top of the cockpit so there’s quite a bit of headroom.

Im 6' and there is plenty room in mine - so you should be good. Did my PPL at Elstree with sell @ AirAcademy - great little airport.
