Surprise! It's snowing, which means we get to thoroughly test this 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo in some seriously rough weather. We're doing Snowpocalypse winter testing on TestDrive!
PRN T-Shirts now available! Check out our original designs here: teespring.com/stores/prn
The WK2 Grand Cherokee has been on the market since the 2011 model year, and has remained mostly unchanged during that time. We featured the 2017 Trailhawk a few years back, but we're back at it with the final model year for this generation. Our full tour and review is on this 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4x4 with most of the optional extras selected. We go over everything you need to know if you're thinking to buy this vehicle for winter.
Our test vehicle comes equipped with the cold weather package, lighting package, Uconnect Navigation, and safety tech package. Key features include bi-xenon headlights with LED fog lights, remote engine starter, keyless entry, power rear liftgate, heated front seats, heated steering wheel, sunroof, 8.4" Uconnect infotainment with Navigation, dual-zone automatic climate control, blind spot monitoring, emergency forward braking, rear parking sensors, and lane departure warning.
We do some thorough winter testing with the Grand Cherokee during a heavy snow storm which dumped approximately 2 feet of snow in our region to see how the Quadra-Trac I 4x4 system works along with the Bridgestone Blizzak winter tires. We see if the Grand Cherokee can get traction under heavy snow conditions on the roads, along with whether it stays straight or gets messy when cornering. We also do some fun winter driving in the end of our driving segment.
We wrap up our episode on the 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo by going over our real-world fuel economy testing with this vehicle, along with our likes and dislikes about it, and some information about sales data from FCA for 2018 and 2019 in the US and in Canada.

If I were Jeep, I would continue making this version for another 10 years under classic name. It is the right size. It is the formulae that Honda tries to emulate with Passport, VW with new two row version of Atlas. Unless you get a German vehicle, you can’t get rear wheel drive two rows. Toyota would never redesign a vehicle this solid that sells in these numbers. The reason it sells well: base V6 and ZF 8 speed are bullet proof. Entertainment screen just works. Remember when this was designed, it was the all bets on vehicle to bring Chrysler out of bad financial situation. That is why ten years on it is still competitive. All features were there were needed then and even now we’re built into it. Ride is smooth, interior is silent. It just works. Show me a Telluride that works the same way ten years from now. It is a vehicle that fits at county club and trendy places as well as school parking lots and can go off-roading too. One can complain about quality issues, but the base version and limited are solid. The real high end with some of the autonomous driving features, big sunroofs, and air suspension can have minor issues. Get the Laredo or Limited or you are good. Get MOPAR extended warranty and even better. I fear Chrysler will build next Grand Cherokee on top of Fiat Alfa platform and ruin it. This is the vehicle that 20 years from now will become the version of Jeep people will lust after like they today with Grand Wagoneer.

I wouldn't worry to much on it's next generation platform it's told that it could be based on Alfa Romeo's Gorgio platform which is FCA's best platform especially for stability and performance

How can you accurately predict the Kia Telluride's future in 10 years. Obviously the JGC is built on a more rugged platform and is designed for true off road capability. 90% of current mainstream SUV's and crossovers (excluding mainly Jeep, Toyota, and Subaru) aren't intended for true off-roading beyond the occasional gravel or dirt road.

It's not a bad idea. I laughed when RAM launched the Classic, and I see them all over the place. They could really easily make a Grand Cherokee Classic and sell it decently equipped as an entry level below the next generation.

Well, this shares the platform with the previous generation Mercedes M-Class, remember "marriage in heaven" between Chrysler and Daimler? Its a solid platform, we love our Limited from 2014. 100K miles without issues, just changed spark plugs but that's it, nothing broke, quite a few recalls though... So eventually FIAT will have to put it on a new platform, will this be progress? Have to see.... KIA Teluride is totally different with front wheel transverse engine and longer, basically much closer to a minivan compared to the Grand Cherokee when it comes to offroad performance...

@J P Funny what you say. it outsold the 4 Runner in 2019. With a MBZ platform, ZF trans and the Pentastar V6, It is a solid SUV. Its a SUV you need to drive to appreciate. Most that drive them love them. I have a 2017 Limited, not 1 problem out of it, smooth, quiet, good power and great daily driver. If mine would get totaled or stolen, I'd buy another one. Just think, if it was all that bad why would sales for year 10 be better then the 9 years before ?

I like the videos made in the snow. But talk about Durango. several years ago I had a 1999 Dodge Durango with a 318 c.i.d. (5.2) engine in it. It had factory 31" Firestone A/T tires on it, and I couldn't wait for a snow storm. Living in an apartment in St. Paul, MN and parking on the street, we would have to have our cars off the street after a snowstorm for plows to come by. It was a Christmas Eve and it snowed heavily for a day and a half. 25" of snow, and of course there are snow drifts. Sitting in that Durango was like sitting in my living room as I let the "truck" warm up to operating temperature. I left it in 4-wheel drive when I parked it, because I was prepared for the storm. I cleaned all the snow off the Durango and asked my neighbor, who was shoveling out his driveway if he thought I would make it down the street. He said "yes", and I was hoping he was right, since the snow was pretty deep. I hopped in the truck it was warm, but I didn't let that make me too comfortable, because I didn't want to be stuck in the snow. I put it in reverse and backed up about a half foot so I would have no snow depth under the tires as I tried to gain momentum. I went forward grinding up the snow and bouncing like I was off-road. It was fun and I was hoping I wouldn't just sink into the snow. I know the tires were giving me the grip I needed. I got to the corner and there was a car stuck with three guys trying to get it out. I drove around the block to the main road and saw two more cars stuck in the road. I came up to the main road which had been plowed, but left a big ridge of snow from the plows. The road to the left and right had no oncoming traffic, so I held a low speed, and powered though the snow bank and I could feel the Durango bouncing up and down and the Firestone tires pulled the truck through the bank crawling onto the freshly paved street. Driving down the main road the only vehicles that were next to me were the lifted trucks, But I would have put money on it that if someone was driving their Jeep Grand Cherokee that they wouldn't be as confident trying to go down those snowy roads, or trying to get though a two foot snow bank.I don't know what happened to the Durango, but the new ones don't look as capable as the older model. I switched over to Jeep.

We did some testing last year in the snow with the Durango and found the tires were likely the culprit on our snow testing. Unfortunately for winter testing, the Durango SRT we featured this year still had Pirelli Scorpion Tires but we had no snow to test them on.

@PRNTestDrive
@PRNTestDrive 2 жыл бұрын
Winter tires certainly make a difference, GOOD winter tires are critical though. It's not enough to just buy the cheapest ones. I don't know how the climate is in Alaska to be honest, I imagine there's a lot more snow than we get here, so finding one with AWD might be the way to go. Luckily Chrysler/Jeep don't change these vehicles much so you could get away with a used 2018+ and have basically the same vehicle as a 2021.

I bought a 2021 WK2 Grand Cherokee as I like this model better than the L model. I have been a long time Jeep owner and think this is one of the best Jeep models and better SUV's out there. Quadra Trac Ii makes handling the worst of roads much better. If you look at the body style of other SUV's out there many of them have copied this Jeep in some way or another. Aged platform aside, it's proven and still very relevant compared to other vehicles out there. Plate C

@PRNTestDrive
@PRNTestDrive 4 жыл бұрын
Personally I agree, it's one of the reasons I dislike travelling back to Ontario during the winter. It's not that I have to worry about me, it's everyone else on the road. I hit some serious snow coming back from the Toronto Auto Show last Thursday, the X3 M Competition I had obliterated the snow on the road, but I was always keeping an eye out for the Corollas on summer tires passing by at 130kph.

I live in Pennsylvania and Just bought a 2021 Grand Cherokee with a Blacked out package that has the 20inch rims. The vehicle stickered for $45k and has some nice amenities, but one thing it doesn't have that your test vehicle does is a select knob for different driving modes. Seems weird that my wife's Fiat 500x has them at $27k and the Jeep doesn't I don't know if they changed packages for this year. I know I didn't want to spend thousands more here in the US just to get a few more options.
@PRNTestDrive
@PRNTestDrive 2 жыл бұрын
That's one thing I find with Jeep, specifically with the Grand Cherokee, since they offer a number of different transfer cases it's not always easy to figure out which one comes on which trim, since it's not really an option that you can select.

@PRNTestDrive
@PRNTestDrive 4 жыл бұрын
That's the thing, once you option it up you're looking at similar money for those higher trims. It's a blessing and a curse for FCA, the trims have so much overlap with their large list of options that it works well for some customers who (for some reason) want a fully loaded Laredo but don't want to get an entry-level Limited, despite having almost all the same features.

It's not the vehicle, it's the tires. I have a Ford Mustang with Blizzaks and I can drive all day in blizzard conditions. Daily drive it in Minnesota.

Tires definitely make a difference. I'm disappointed we couldn't test the 2020 Durango we're premiering today in the snow, FCA put some monstrous Pirelli Scorpion Winters on it, and we find those end up gripping the best.

If you have the correct off-road system you'll have the option on the drive mode selector. Jeep offers about 4 different transfer cases on this vehicle, meaning you need to have the right options selected from the factory in order to have all the off-road features.

I had a 94 jeep and messed up the transfer case because I was putting it in 4wd while stopped. I didn't know the vehicle had to be moving. So I think you drive really slow... And select the option you want... But keep moving

The only thing this does poorly is the cargo area. For the price and fuel economy, the space inside is very limited. But other than that the reason it still sells well is they got everything else right. I mean its "a true suv" but pleasant to drive on the road, its comfortable and upscale, and the trailhawk is a genuine offroader. With the 2021 model on the alfa romeo platform, they are modifying it to get as close to this as possible while still supporting all the new manufacturing processes because of how well they nailed the grand Cherokee. The cargo area will be much bigger though as it's getting a third row option like a 4runner

I've seen some spy shots of the new Grand Cherokee, or what people assume is the new one. It looks noticeably longer, but I'm wondering if those spy shots aren't the Grand Wagoneer that's supposed to launch again soon.

@@PRNTestDrive Yea rumor mill has been running crazy with the GC and Wagoneer. Some are saying the GC is staying 2 row and they're saving the 3 row for the wagoneer, others are saying the GC is getting a LWB 3 row model, like how chevy has the blazer and traverse, and then the wagoneer will just be a big ass body on frame suv. They are also toying with their new inline 6 turbo

It'll be interesting to see what they actually end up doing. I think we'll see both at the Detroit Auto Show, I asked my FCA reps last week about a surprise showing at the Toronto Auto Show and I felt like they knew it would be coming soon.

@@PRNTestDrive yea they have been selling 2020 grand cherokees for dirt cheap right now, the same way chevy is handing out suburbans. They're clearing inventory for a reason

Hopefully they don't make this a 3 row vehicle. I don't want to have to switch to a Wrangler.

Considering Jeep has made this generation for 12 model years I think getting parts for it won't be a problem, unless you live somewhere that these aren't sold.

I checked out the 2021 Laredo E....nothing special, nothing different. Better off with a CPO 2019 or 2020. And can also go off roading even with the QT1 without the low range.

That can be said for a lot of FCA's vehicles, they don't really change them year to year, it's something we mentioned when we drove the 2019 Dodge Charger.

I know you’re trying to be clever, but the amount of people out there who don’t do this and assume AWD/4WD and all-seasons is all they need is the reason I have to keep saying it. It might be a no-brainer to you, but there are a lot of people out there with no brains.

Auto insurance is proof enough that there are plenty of brainless drivers. If you want an object lesson, spend a week driving in Florida and you'll see that common sense isn't common
