Excellent video! Did a -35 camp in the 5m bell tent a week ago. Cold cold cold but we cut the chill by also carrying a Mr. Buddy heater in addition to the wood stove. New sub.

Golden Gildo yeah we did it but it was cold and not very comfortable. We need to either get a liner and or a larger stove. We added a stove jack to the roof so we arnt fooling around with weird flue pipe angles using the side exit.

100 thumbs up!!! Back when I was doing it, I called it at -25C. I could do colder, but the vehicles start getting cranky and it became more about staying warm than about having fun. It's hard on the dawgs at that temp too. Really looking forward to your Argo tracks - stay safe you two!

Nice demo of the tent, it looks like it's put together well & roomy enough. In temps that cold the reality is that you need a bigger stove or cover the tent with extra tarps, pine boughs, leaves, or whatever resources can add an extra layer of protection from the wind & cold. For an underrated sleeping bag, just fill your (leak-proof) water bottle with hot water and put it in the bag with you.

I agree, I am ex-military and retired Paramedic,,,1st lifetime, then computer center manager, well at 67 my wife won't let me go alone camping,,,and none of my city friends would even consider it,, she says it's not safe here,,,among other things,,,so I live my outdoor life through you!!! Thanks again,, love hot tenting! I know it's not "bushcrafting" but in extreme cold ( where it could be dangerous ) take a flat dry log cut a groove in the center about 1/4" and apply some lighter fluid, allow it to soak in and re-apply,,,or rub it with some hexy,,,again I used it in the service when you just had to get a fire going,,,also try to use a double coffee filter in the coffee cone,,,allows a slower seep,,, As far as fire building the old vasline and tinder work well,,once again thanks for sharing, wish you were closer,,love to visit....

God bless you and Esme. Your relaxed style and Esme's occasional "comments" make for a very real and soothing style. Easy to travel with you vicariously. I trust your opinions on kit you're using. FYI...be aware...some of the synthetic material used in the rather "hitech" gloves you showed here at $22 is pure junk....Lovely and fuzzy but, no insulating value at all. Enjoy your videos..Best Regards NIel.

Hey Michael love the video! Have been looking into a snowtrekker and stove myself actually. I have a bit of experience working with those ninja ice gloves outdoors at cold temperatures. They hold up surprisingly well and the first things to go on them are usually the fleece liners wearing out and the rubber or threads getting punctured or pulled out by sharp things. Another important point is that they take a very long time to dry out If your hands become sweaty. I used 2 pairs that i rotated every day because leaving the gloves out overnight wasnt long enough and I would come in to still wet gloves in the morning. Keep up the adventuring from a fellow Albertan and I will see you out there!
@TheEmporiumOutdoors

Hi ArchagelBDZ - Thanks for the info on the gloves - good info to have! Did you turn the glove inside out to dry? Just curious. I looked at a lot of options before deciding on the Snowtrekker tent - I had the list down to 3 main tents - Snowtrekker EXP, Seek Outside 4 man Tipi & the Esker Arctic Fox. I was thinking of making a video outlining why I chose the Snowtrekker over other products. I definatly made the right choice! Nice to see another Albertan on the channel! 😉🇨🇦 Best wishes Michael & Esme! 🐶

Hey Michael and Esme. Sad news from me. Sorry I have not been about making my usual silly comments. So here it is: About 2 weeks ago I had yet another heart attack and also managed to collapse 3 times with a heart rate of under 35. Yes I was back in hospital again and being told that I now have Bradycardia and a Left bundle branch block. I ended up in in ICU for a few days and they finally decided to fit me with a pace maker, which has kind of slowed me to a standstill. From consultations I now understand that my days of wild camping and real bush craft are over. I still have a lot of things that need taking care of but for now all I do is sleep. I will try to follow you on YT as much as I can, but I am gearing up for a new way of life. Take care buddy. Your friend Rach

Interesting video on hot-tenting. SUGGESTIONS: 1Make a pulk tow hitch (X'd poles on a belt) and pulling your pull will be Much more controllable and comfortable, WITH ski poles to assist you in deep snow. 2.Wear knee high gaiters for a better seal between boot tops and pants. 3.Lose the heavy cot and use a winter mattress with at least an R5 rating with closed cell pad like a RidgeRest beneath it. 4.Vaseline-soaked cotton balls are an excellent fire starter and weigh next to nothing. 5.Instead of various pairs of gloves bring One pair of glove shells with 2 or 3 pair of thick fleece liners. For those temps I have a -30 F. down expedition parka and a -20 F. down bag large enough for me to also wear a down puffy jacket and pants to take it to -40 F. My mitten shells have boiled wool Dachstein mitten liners with light synthetic glove liners, personally tested good at -40 F. For sleeping I wear a fleece balaclava and Psolar face mask.
@TheEmporiumOutdoors
@TheEmporiumOutdoors 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the great tips Eric! You are totally right about the pulk - Wasn't a great setup. I've changed my setup significantly since this video - But my gear worked, but it could have been better! I now have lighter gear more suitable for sled travel. However, -40c is still cold for any overnight solo - I'm capping my limit to -30c in future. This was a little too close to where I felt, if things go wrong now - I'm in serious trouble. 😉
@ericb.4358
@ericb.4358 4 жыл бұрын
I agree about -40 F/-40 C. (same temperature at that point) being too dangerous. I have a -20 F. down mummy bag and even with adding a puffy jacket and pants over heavy long johns it might be a chilly night at -40 F. In my Moment DW solo tent the temp would be 10 F. higher but still I'd need my closed cell RidgeRest pad under my winter insulated air mattress. I feel my -30 F. down expedition parka with a down vest under it would be OK at -40 F. I've experienced -40 F. and had no problems. My mittens are OR Gore-Tex shells over Dachstein heavy boiled wool mittens and that was nicely warm at -40 F. With ski goggles and balaclava face mask and the parka hood I'd be fine. ** One must be very careful to breathe through a face mask at -30 F./-40 F.to avoid damaging your lungs with heavy breathing.
@ericb.4358
@ericb.4358 4 жыл бұрын
Looks like my reply wasn't saved so here goes again. You're correct, -40 F. (same in Celsius at this point) is very dangerous. My -20 F. down mummy bag would require that I wear my puffy jacket and pants over heavy long johns and a fleece balaclava to be warm at that temperature. In my solo Moment DW tent it would be about 10 F. warmer than outside but still d@mn cold. Outside my -30 F. Eddie Bauer PEAK XV expedition parka over a down vest, insulated ski pants over the puffy pants and OR Gore-Tex shells with heavy Dachstein boiled wool mittens would keep me nicely warm. I've worn those mittens at -40 F. and been fine. Naturally I would have to wear FELT PACS but *** here is a big tip: The best Vapor Barrier Liner (VBL) is a pair of 3 mm thick closed cell neoprene divers socks. I've found US Divers brand the best as they are factory seam sealed and shaped to Left and Right feet. Wear them over thin poly liner socks and take a spare pair of liner socks for each day. At night put the sweaty pair in a ZipLoc freezer bag. Turn the divers socks inside-out and let dry 10 minutes then put them in the foot of your sleeping bag ALONG WITH YOUR FELT BOOT LINERS. Telescope the boot shell tops over each other to keep out spindrift snow and put the boots in your vestibule overnight. The VBLs keep the felt liners DRY AND WARM ALL DAY. For a trip longer than 2 nights you may want to invest in a sleeping bag VBL (from Stephenson's Warmlite) otherwise your bag will get more frozen body vapor in it every day. This is what doomed the ill-fated Scott Antarctic Expedition. I give this advice as a former Nordic Ski Patroller and US Army ROTC Cadet winter survival instructor.

Hi Eric - All good advice! And I can tell you speak from experience! The fact that I have a hot tent negates some of the problems you clearly stated. I can dry my gear and moisture is not a problem for me. I have an upgraded my cot to a Helinox version and have a Therm-a-Rest NeoAir Extreme mat. I'm contemplating a There-a-rest polar ranger sleeping bag -30c BUT I like the square bags as my dog can sleep in the bottom! 🐶. I switched my heavy pack boots to US Airforce Mukluks (with mods) and love them as they are warm and light! I've used Dachstein boiled wool mittens before and they are remarkable! I'm also not travelling too far with the pulk as that would change some aspects too! Face mask is a great idea, something I should pickup! I can tell you are passionate about winter camping and its great to learn and share with good people! 😉

I have that same cot but it is the Kelty original version. The legs are actually quite clever but can be a pain in the butt. likely why Kelty sold off the design and discontinued selling it. Good to know that it is still around though as I might want a second one some day.

Mine did get a little easier but not too much. it still takes a good amount of effort but it goes together smoother now. I left it together at home for about a week and laid on it to read etc to help it get situated. I got a little better at putting it together too as i learned how to apply pressure to the legs more efficiently. Lots of reviews on it describe similar pains with it. Hi Mike and Esme😊 That was one really cold looking trip. We are having a heatwave in NZ at the moment so your video was a welcome reprieve! I don't think your tent was suited to the conditions though- the quilted Russian army tents would be much better (though pretty darn heavy to lug about on the sled). Also on another hot tent video I saw the chap had a cylinder that attached to the base of the chimney that caught all the wasted heat. At those temperatures even an extra 5-10 degrees would make a big difference. I'd love to see you two go on another deep freeze trip with arctic rated gear- it would certainly be a lot cosier than this trip was !!! Take care my friends, until next time.
@TheEmporiumOutdoors
@TheEmporiumOutdoors 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Gary - You are absolutely right. My gear is not really rated for this level of temperature - the tent was bleeding out too much heat and the stove was struggling to keep up. A lined tent would defiantly be the way forward and the additional heat exchanger a very welcome upgrade. The Snowtrekker is good down to -30c I would say. The weight of the arctic gear is a big drawback but if you want comfort and survivability at -40c and below its the only option! Great comment - Best wishes Michael & Esme!

Hi Daniel - I got up once to add more wood to the stove but the heat output wasn't enough to keep the tent from dropping very low. My internal thermometer dropped so low it didn't register correctly 🤔 - going to buy some new ones. However, the TETON did a good job and we kept warm all night despite the zipper issues. The sled I have is too small and not a proper pulk - its ok for my short trips but once the Argo has the tracks we will be more mobile 👍

Great Vids !! I have a couple quick questions for you if you don't mind: What did you think of the Cabela's cot ? Do you prefer your Teton ? also curious which is your favourite tent/cot combo ?
@TheEmporiumOutdoors
@TheEmporiumOutdoors 5 жыл бұрын
Sure - The Cabelas cot it tough to put up and even harder in the cold. I like my Teton but it's not really portable unless carried by a UTV and too big for this tent. I bought the Helinox camp cot one high and although its very expensive its actually the best one. The best tent cot system is the TETON so far. It's modular so you can use the cot, cot and tent or just the tent. Hope that helps!
