I enjoy tumbling. But you are exactly right with the patience needed, the grit and rock expenses, and the time that it takes (months even when using a vibratory tumbler for stages 2-4). Even if you use 40 grit for stage 1, it can take 4-6 weeks for some rocks. There is a lot to learn. For instance, I have found that it's best not to mix quartzites with any other stone during the pre-polish and polish stages because it sometimes tends to break apart even after it has been smoothed by stage 1. Also, careful cleanup of the slurry in the 5 gallon buckets takes a while each week. Eventually many people get 2 or more rotary tumblers plus a vibratory tumbler. So between that and the quantity of stage 1 grit needed throughout the year, the price of tumbling easily gets to the price of a decent cabber. That all being said, seeing 25 green aventurines transform from coarse, dull, brown/green rocks to a green mirror like finish, just from tumbling (and cleaning) is very cool.

Thanks for the reminder to do some ever present maintenance on the rock tools. I agree no paint on the head. A quick go with the bench grinder with a wire brush should take care of it and round off the sharp edge. I liked the old video. A dremel and press is in my price range. I don't think I need much more than that. Be happy, safe and stay healthy. 😷⚒

I love my rock tools, so giving them some loving care is important. Thanks for making manuals available, my Lortone was used and no manual was available. 😊

Good points all. I do like tumbling, but I am less critical of my results. I just like a little bit of shine and clean up. The Estwing blue paint- 100% agree. I was doing some excavating last year- "what is that really cool blue rock?!" Oh, paint chip from pick. Lol! Thx for the hard work this week Jared!

Wow! That new estwing product is certainly not the same quality as every other estwing product I've seen! Did they sell the company or something? I'm with you, I don't know about that one. I'm really interested to see if you can even find a use for it that you rock hammer, and you geo pick don't already do for you. But I'm willing to keep an open mind. And your owners manual and repair/maintenance guide archive is such a wonderful thing that you have done for this community and all those who need it. I know it takes time to copy and list every one of them, but it is so needed and will be such an amazing help to those that but their equipment used and rarely do we hang on to those old pieces of paper when we bought it years ago. I know the next generation of Rockhound/lapidary will so appreciate it! You are such an asset to this whole field! And it's gone so far beyond calling it a hobby anymore. When your hobby consist of many machines that cost more than half the cars I've ever owned, it's no longer a hobby! People who spend thousands on a saw, a cabbing machine, polishing and the rough to work with, for their hobby, seems like maybe they should use that stuff more than a few times a month! And then you add a faceting machine too, well I'm just sure that if it's still just a hobby, like golf, or fishing, then you better be independently wealthy! Lol! And I haven't watched the video about the Rock Rollers show yet, but I'm about to! Thanks Jared, for all you do for this community and to grow this community! You really are a gem! ❤

Man, I really like those old-school PSA safety videos. My favorite tools, not limited to rock tools, are tools I inherited from my grandfather. Even if there wasn't any sentimental value in them, they would still be my favorite. Made in the USA doesn't mean the same thing as it once did. It is very disappointing to see lazy craftsmanship on many tools from companies that once had an outstanding reputation.

I have to say, I have learned something new. This mushrooming thing... I had no clue. I love old tools. I have quite a few beaten up chisels and thought that's just a 'character'. I will get the grinder out...

It is a real thing. I obtained a sliver of steel in my lower lip from a mushroomed cold chisel back when I was an auto mechanic. It took a while for it to work it's way out and it was not very big. I'm sure glad it didn't land in an eye since I had no eye protection.

Rock tumbling is not for kids. Rock tumbling takes time and patience, and it can be very disappointing. Please watch other channels that specialize in rock tumbling before attempting. I've been doing Rock tumbling for a year now and have just figured out proper steps and recipes for tumbling properly tumbled rocks. Please send your manuals to Jared for archiving. It will help a lot of people now and in the future. 👍🏻🍻
