We live in western Washington, making several trips a year to Utah. It’s terrible I forgot their names. The gentleman who owns that rock shop is amazing. So is the one who run some of the classes. They have no problem sitting there and talking with you about what they found what they’ve done sharing their experiences. And they have been to those sites. We actually went to one of the sites and couldn’t find it. I called the shop and he explained exactly what it looked like. Of course it was right behind, blocked by some bushes. I enjoy the pictures that they have so that you can see what’s actually available in Utah. His prices are amazing. And he’s willing to do trades.

You are not wrong about the Ogden, Salt Lake City, Provo corridor, I just drove it yesterday. The only place I know where you can get a ticket for doing the speed limit if everyone is going faster, and they always are. Definition of urban sprawl.

Next time you come out to Utah you've got to go to the Dugway Geode Beds! We've found amazing Geode with parallax banding. Also, you drove through Millard County. They have an excellent FREE guidebook that includes great rock hounding suggestions with directions. Down by Capital Reef and Hanksville area there are lots of fossils that are 83 MYO. Plus lots of UGLY petrified wood. Green River, Utah had lots to offer as well. The visitors center will help you locate a lot of fascinating rock formations, petroglyphs, etc. You must spend an entire month in Utah to get to all the "must do" locations.

Thanks for another insightful SNS! There are so many guide books out there these days, its kind of ridiculous! And i did qhat most oeople are going to do and thats buy the middle of the road (cost) book out there and it may be at least reasonably adequate! But that would be the gem trails book for the area im heading too! Too frustrating for me! I use your website to find the most acurate information out there. And i dont get to go to many sites these days! I dont know whether thats a curse or a blessing!?! And i still have yet to stop in utah anywhere. Ive driven through on my way to colorado several times, but ive never stopped anywhere! Not even for gas! I would love to see the dino tracks, even if they are a little underwhelming. And the petroglyphs! And the grand canyon! I just want to get out and travel! But i can no longer drive, so I'm at the mercy of someone else. And it can never get coordinated with their jobs. So i dont ever get to go anywhere these days. I was hoping that ken would be here by now and then we could do whatever we wanted but he is waiting to be able to leave florida. Anyways, great SNS! Lol!

Jared, I've owned the whole series of "Discovering Washington's Historic Mines" since they first came out. They are all very well researched, detailed, and just a joy to use. Wish all rockhounding books were as well put together and useful! By the way, we drive through the Salt Lake metroplex at least once or twice a year on our winter migration to southern Arizona. I agree completely with your assessment, even though there are some good shops and locations there. Hate driving it though. Did you mention the name of the Orem shop where you bought the books? If so, I missed it. Might be interested in checking it out next trip... (Oh, is it actually named "The Rock Shop" , or is it "Simple Elegance?")

The last time I was in the PDA pit, the wall of agate was a pretty solid piece. Some people hunted around for cracks and tried to work chisels in. I walked around with my spray bottle and picked up what they had broken off with the machine. That giant agate vein is an awesome sight though.

I did the same thing you did. Some of the direction are spot on, but you will find its not detailed enough, more of a generalized area. I found just researching rock hounding on the internet produce some good result. By Parawon north of thier is some real good blue agate. Going to pay for dig outside of Milford for bacon agate is wealth it. Also green agate by beaver. Best place to find dinosaur bones is in San Rafeal sweal. Yes just about any wash will produce agate.
