If you double indicated front side and back side of your test bar and it showed that indicator movement going the same way you would know it was an alignment issue with the pointing of the bar and not a taper in the part. You might have fixed one problem and created another when you adjusted it. Belive me from doing the HBM it is super easy to do and to chase your tail for days finding the best averages.
@Abom796 жыл бұрын
Chasing your tail is exactly what you get into here. It’s easy for people to say this or that and what I did wrong, but when you spend half the day trying to get it right, you settle on what you think is good enough. The bed is leveled to the best I can get it, and I turned that test bar to the specs I give you. I don’t see how the headstock alignment can be out that far once the indicator was going down it. Others may think I’m wrong, but this is one of those cases where everyone has an opinion.
@zedo58515 жыл бұрын
Adam the easiest way to dial in the headstock is remove the Chuck get a test bar with the proper taper for the spindle bore about 12 to 18 inches long and mount a dial test indicator to the carriage and sweep it along it and move the head until you get where you like it to be. Do the same to the top of the test bar. It well show you if the ways are worn or not. Checkout Connleys book on rebuilding lots of great information. Cheers Zed

What about skim cutting a thick wall aluminum pipe, sticking out of the chuck, with a sharp high speed steel tool bit which has a positive rake? Aluminum should cut with little tool pressure and the thick wall pipe shouldn't spring much.

Great job Adam, knocking some weight off will make a big difference, I gave up sugar based soft drinks years ago that will help in the weight loss program. ice tea and carbonated water can usually satisfy the liquid refreshments people get accustomed to. When you are young people tend to abuse their health, the older you get you realize you have one body and if you take care of it the better off you are making it to retirement age and beyond.

Hi, Congratulations on your weight loss. You won't regret it. About 14 years ago (age 58) I had a left hip replacement and I was round like a ball. At 5.5 and 235 lbs you could roll me down the sidewalk. My doctor suggested that I lose some (a lot) of weight. I changed my diet and started walking on a daily basis at our local mall. I started out with one mile and over a period of 4 months I worked my way up to 10 miles daily. I lost 40 lbs. in 4 months then I hit a brick wall as far as the weight loss was concerned. I bought a bicycle and started out with one mile a day and worked my way up to 10 miles a day while also walking 10 miles at the mall. In about another month and a half I took an additional 15 lbs off for a total of 55 lbs. My doctor was amazed and pleased. Yep, 10 miles walking and 10 miles riding. After that I felt like a teenager. Ha Ha My doctor told me to grab a 5 lb bag of sugar and take a walk carrying it. You get tired in a hurry. Imagine carrying around 11 each 5 lb bags of sugar all day long. At the start I had high blood pressure and high cholesterol. After losing the weight they both improved dramatically and I was able to decrease my medications. I have been able to keep the weight off for these 14 years. At 72 years of age I am now facing surgery for a new right hip replacement. Can't wait to get it done so I can get back to my retirement fun. i.e. fishing and machining. You and your body will be glad you made the choice to lose some weight. John

I feel I need to add to this. Behind the tailstock where the gears are, there are two more 10mm bolts that needs loosening if you are running out of range of adjustment and needs to pivot the headstock the other way. One is behind the "banjo", the other is behind the main V belts.

You got that wrong about moving half the measured error to get the tailstock true. The half rule applies when your movement is going to be doubled by cutting both sides, as in a turning tool cutting all the way around a part. Since you just need two things to align, and one is behind the other by X, you move it up X until they align. This is moving, not cutting. Your clue was that after making the adjustment half the distance of the error, you were only half way there.

Our 12" Nardini lathe acts like that. The saddle runs crooked when no load is applied, but runs true under cutting pressure. It made centering the tailstock a PITA. It also make very light finish cuts (under 0.025") impossible. I assume the ways are worn "wavy".
@jcameron25545 жыл бұрын
Jeeze, your lathe needs work, I have a Myford ML4 from the 40's and my lathe can hold a 1 thou taper on 3/8" brass stock 6" from the chuck. Setup is key, make sure it's leveled, (Google rollies dad's method of lathe alignment), then set your lathe on adjusting nuts if it doesn't have riser blocks make them. The ML4 is a cantilever bed and I can still hold that tolerance. Your over half a millimetre out on a finishing cut. Good luck.

My project yesterday was to adjust the taper on my head stock… I had a 0.05” taper over 10”, and finally after watching videos like this, I was armed with the knowledge and the courage to give it a go… after 3 adjustments I ended up with 0.00016” taper over 10”, and wasn’t brave enough to get it any closer… I think th was as close as I was going to get… obviously I had to adjust the tailstock as well, and after many tries, I ended up with 0.00008” over 24”… again, I was really happy with that… however, I used a dead centre in the tailstock, and even with constant lubrication the piece got very hot… I didn’t notice at first, and all my measurements were out and I was moving the tailstock in the wrong direction… I ended up swapping to the live centre which turned out well…

I have a Starrett that you may have never seen. I buy, sell, trade and collect tools both modern and antique. I go to the Habitat Restore a least once a day and buy tools. A few months ago I picked up a Starrett ratchet with a Jan.11 1916 patd. date. It is a model 443. It has a female 5/8 drive and it use stamped steel sockets. It has a knurled rod at the bottom that you pull and twist to turn direction of the ratchet. I once found a Starrett tool for clamping two 12 inch steel rulers together after stepping on it several times while looking at other tools. The Habitat Restore by me has a fresh supply of tools almost every day and cheap prices.

Another good reason to use a quality framer is that they use non acidic mat paper between the poster and the glass. Glass is always flowing and will eventually flow into paper fibers. It may take 50 -100 years but it will happen.

Hi Adam. I remember reading somewhere in a old machine accuracy text that the head stock is canted towards the operator by 1 thou at four inches from the chuck to compensate for tool pressure. This could account for the discrepancy. If I can find the text I will let you know the title of it. Try reading "Testing Machine Tools" by Dr Georg Schlesinger 7th Ed. It available in PDF format online. Try reading page 16 as it says "The headstock should be so aligned that an arbor inserted in the spindle nose rises or inclines upwards only at its free end with respect to the bed ways, whilst inclining in the horizontal plane towards the tool post only. This will counteract the deformations resulting from the weight of the work piece and the cutting force.
@lifeteen26 жыл бұрын
Hmm, I suppose I could see that being a general "rule of thumb" kind of thing for the old mass production turret lathes, but that seems like a bad idea for a good toolmaker's lathe. Every material, diameter, and cutting tool will cause different amounts of deflection. That sounds like a "good enough" solution for mass production if you know what your cuts are, but for custom precision work I think managing taper should be totally in the hands of the machinist.
@jcameron25545 жыл бұрын
No it's not the headstock it's the cross slide that is off true, this is so that when two faced parts are stacked together they can't rock on a pivot. They have a slight concave face machined into them. If everything was machined with the ways perfectly designed to zero tolerance, then you would end up two faced parts on a lathe slightly rocking and driving you mad as everything was perfect to ever test you could perform.
@kglesq16 жыл бұрын

24:00 may not be perfect on circumference, but centered is centered thought right? taper or not
@jcameron25545 жыл бұрын
In principle yes, however the cut peice is dialed from cross slide, and the tailstock barrel is dialled from the cross slide indicating that the two are perfect to each other. So the lathe bed is levelled to the tailstock, it cuts a peice of work and dials perfectly. This means that the only other option is that the headstock is out, unless the headstock and tailstock is out. For a machine shop first principle is making sure the bed ways are level each end. Then the headstock turns a true dia with the spring of material removed by several passes at the same setting. The setting up a test bar between centres and indicating the difference for the tailstock to align that.
@dizzolve6 жыл бұрын

The way I went about aligning my headstock was to turn a test piece, measure at two points (if you want more out of this process you can take many measurments and plot them n Excel which will show if there's wear on the ways as well if there's a curve), mark the points and then adjust until a dial that's set to 0 at the marked point nearest the chuck shows exactly half the difference in diameter at the second marked point. I got within 11" (0.0027°) pretty quickly and just confirmed the dial readings with a test cut, and if it wasn't for the set screw location I would have done that even faster. PS: My heastock has a hinge pin so you can't really line it up with the tailstock, and combined with the fact that my tailstock is probably worn down too, I couldn't get microdrills to get going (a 0.2mm drill will just bounce around the flat from the tiny chisel of a 3mm spot drill, a 0.15mm drill will just break)

Put a dial indicator (lever or plunger type) in the chuck. Bring tail stock as close as possible to chuck. Set tail stock "O" on dial indicator by rotating chuck. Slide tail stock away as far as possible from chuck. Now, my next statement will sound weird. Use an aluminium bar (or prepare a piece of pipe - fairly rigid) of good size and fit dial indicator to one side of bar (this should be done beforehand) and grip in chuck. Check the run-out on tail stock quill. Now adjust head stock to bring dial indicator reading to Zero. Repeat this process until you get a zero reading at the chuck and tail stock with the tail stock away as far as possible from chuck. Remember, the guide ways determine what the alignment will be because everything works from the guideways on a lathe. The longer the distance over which alignment is done, the more accurate the result will be.
