I love seeing your shaper work Adam, it reminds me of when I was an apprentice toolmaker . We has two which would square up blocks to be made into valves. I remember grinding the tools and setting them but we never took the depth of cuts you do, only about 0.250 inches, in those days the UK worked in Imperial like you, not the metric shit we have now.

Ha! I've got a very old Eagle bottom plunker that had the same thing happen to it. Now I don't feel quite so bad about it. It did actually give me a bit more control on when oil came out of the tip, so I haven't bothered to try opening it back up. Very good for putting a very small amount of oil in a very specific spot.

Use osopho on raw tubing to prep for paint. It leaves a white powder when dry (two or three days). In South Texas we use it to prep salvage drill stem we use on the ranch for fence corner posts, gates, etc. Should cost less than 20/gal at big box lumber yard.

Adam, another thing to talk about in an SNS at some point is why you always want to snug up your drill chucks on more than one hole. Especially a precision chuck like the Jacobs N series. I don't think a lot of people know that you want to spread out the load on the chuck internals as well as getting a tighter bite on what you are putting into the chuck than tightening just one hole. This is a good episode. For the two drill sizes for the taps. My dad and grandpa always called those "Machine tap" and "Express tap" size drills. I think Ive seen a drill chart call out the "Express" before but can't remember.

Hi Adam, With all of the modern cutting lubes, I, like you, still stick to old fashioned dark sulfurized cutting oil (DSCO) for steel over about 1/4" tapping and threading. Unlike other "lighter" duty lubricants, I never have a problem with chip welding with DSCO. If staining isn't a problem, I'll use it on non-ferous metals as well. Ridgid and Black Swan are my go to DSCOs. I love the smell of DSCO in the morning.
@PeterWMeek6 жыл бұрын
Not a use for a shaper that I would have ever thought of. I always really enjoy your shop videos. And yep, you have about 0.005" of shimming to do on that tailstock; note that unlike cutting to see whether it cuts a taper, direct measurement means you make the adjustment for the full indicated difference. You have to paint over those rust-conversion products. They make an excellent primer (once they have converted the rust and turned black), but they are neither weather-proof nor abrasion resistant.

@SynchroScore5 жыл бұрын
For all the people complaining about you spending all that effort on buying and shipping and restoring the shaper, here's your answer. How else do they propose squaring up those tube ends? Get a 5" long end mill and hope you don't wreck it on that weld? Stand the tube up, bolted to the front of the milling machine table, and indicate the sides perpendicular to the table? Set it in a four-jaw chuck on the lathe and hope that you've got a great big through spindle? No, just set it in the shaper vise and set the automatic downfeed, and sit back and watch, making sure you don't get chips flying at you.

Thanks and keep up the good work.

With the shaper, could you, in theory, make a double side tool so that it cuts on the forward stroke and the backward stroke? Would the machine be capable?
@randynewtonsr96596 жыл бұрын
HighTechLab I do not think that is possible because the “clapper box” mechanism is hinged and therefore I believe only works on the push stroke!
@brianwalk1086 жыл бұрын
thats correct, also the down feed would have to feed at both ends of the stroke, not sure what that would take. The stroke is also engineered to move faster on the back stroke to increase productivity, so it would affect your speeds. It might be possible to make it work, but would require more modifications than just a different tool.

Hey Adam, Would it make more sense to mill two flats on each boss and not weld them in so you can rotate them to level the table? I can't see those rubberised feet wanting to spin with 1/2 ton of table pushing down?
@thunderstruck10786 жыл бұрын
Only the nut has to move in order for table to come up. Or am I missing something here?

Don't think so. The nut is just to lock after adjustment. The bosses are threaded...

Hey Adam, Here in Scotland I've used a product made by Hammerite called KRUST, a watery milky liquid that converts rust to a black primed surface like the product you describe. Be prepared to be amazed if yours works like mine did. Quite expensive though but worth every penny (cent)
@ColtaineCrows6 жыл бұрын
I've used this from many different vendors, Hempel, Northstar/Lusid, Brunox, Biltema, Bilt Hamber etc etc. Never encountered one that didn't work, but ymmv when it comes to the durability of the coat, pretty much the only difference I've noticed. But as long as you prime and paint over it later or keep it indoor it lasts pretty much forever.

Hi Adam, shouldn't you have the clapper box holder tilted the opposite way so when the clapper box lifts on the back stroke it move the tool away from the workpiece? Nice finished surface.
@pyalot6 жыл бұрын
I think the tilt is set correctly. Imagine the plane of rotation (perpendicular to the axis of rotation). The higher you go on that plane, the further you get away from the workpiece. As the clapper rotates on the back stroke, it lifts the tool higher on that plane, therefore away from the workpiece. If you set the tilt the other way it would rub against the cut surface on the backstroke.
