I can give you a few tips Adam. I've operated tank tucks for 18 years. With a system very similar to your Freddy vac, just many many times larger scale. You want to make sure your hoses are completely unraveled. When your done sucking, with the valve open, walk the hose to the machine to make sure all your fluid is gone from the hose. Same thing when blowing it. I noticed how it was struggling to come up the clear hose because it was still hooked at the top. I don't know why they put the valve at the end of the hose on the evac line, instead of at the tank. Had they done that you would be able to evacuate the drain hose when it empties, so you don't have the fluid go back into the tank.

There is definitely something satisfying about vacuuming a vat of goo. If the coolant is filtered regularly it can be kept fresh indefinitely. This coolant was beyond saving but should be much better from now on if he also skims the surface oil. We have a Freddy Ecovac which is a big brother to the Micro+ Adam has.

I could smell that sump from here! I was out of engineering for 11 years between 2002 and 2013 being a police officer, but when I went back to aerospace, in the intervening years the coolants had undergone a sea change. The stuff I use now is more or less totally clear, and never gets and anaerobic bacteria or other nasties in it if left dormant for a while. The only reason it gets pumped out now is if there's a build up of grinding dust in the sump limiting it's capacity or it gets heavily mixed with tramp oil - but that's rare. While my machines lose a lot through evaporation and extraction in use (that's grinding!) so are always being topped up, they go some 2-3 years between complete pump outs now. Amazing stuff, and it NEVER starts to smell bad.

Saw a thing a while back on how concrete bank vaults are made. In addition to typical rebar, etc., they'll often supplement the aggregate with old machine shop chips like these. They're ideal because they're all different sizes and types of metals and make drilling nearly impossible.

Hey Adam, In the Shop I work in (Germany), we use a Systemcleaner for the coolant, that gets mixed into the old coolant and it kills bacteria and mould in it. Then the pump runs for a while, that everything gets "cleaned". After that we empty the sump and clean it with degreaser and Isopropanol to disinfect it, so that the fresh coolent won't get contaminated and that it lasts longer. Kind regards from Bavaria👍🏻

I am a maintenance tech at a large shop. One of my monthly PM's is too clean out all the sumps for all the metal cutters. We have a Parker filtration pump that pulls the coolant into a 200 micron filter, then a 10 micron filter and then discharges into a holding tank. Once the coolant is out, I scape out all the chips and crap that accumulates. Then I return the clean coolant back to the sump and it's good to go. We were doing it every six months, but it's just too far gone and 10x harder. If you do it monthly it's not so bad. We do a complete coolant change out once a year. We use the Blazer semi-synthetic and add fungicide to keep it from getting rancid.

Recommend you switch from buckets to poly or metal drums. One open top with a lid and a second closed top with bungs. 55-gallon size may be cheaper, but 40-gallon are easier to move and should be enough capacity. This will cut down on the splash back. Also a drum dolly would take care of hauling buckets by hand.

Nice rig. Likely the Monarch had about 8 gallons of old coolant as over time, evaporation lost 2 gallons, as the bedpan filled just right with the 10 gallons. That coolant pump on the Monarch must be one rugged fella...the fine metal chips it passes through it in between coolant changes. Keeping up with maintenance makes for a better shop every time. I like to use kitty litter scoops to scoop whatever will scoop out of the sump, and a 20 micron filter on these sorts of things that way you end up with less dust inside. I use 20 micron filters on all my manual and cnc sumps. It actually improves tool life by quite a bit for the through-tool coolant cutters. Also that type of clear hose likes to kink when it gets hot.
