THIS TAKES ME BACK TO 2013!! Does anyone else remember back then how shocked everyone was when this song came out? This was before K-Pop had gotten widely experimental. And because of how unusual the song sounded there were lots of channels making rearranged and remastered videos, like multiple different versions because people just wanted to make sense of the song LMAO Although, I remember being one of the few people loving the song when it came out (but I was biased because it was my first ever SNSD comeback as a SONE so I would've settled for anything). I love this version though, ZSunder. The rearrangement makes more sense than the original, but then again- the original was never meant to be 'generic' in the first place

@@vanhminglianitochhawng3209 Well every SM idol either has a song or an entire album that is pretty out there for K-Pop. But even outside of that, a lot of other idols are now pushing the envelope for K-Pop. Before this track, the whole 'genre-swapping' style didn't exist widely. Now there are SO many tracks switch up the instrumentation and music style throughout. I think most K-Pop fans are used to it, so it doesn't stand out as much. With that being said though, there is NO other song like IGAB even 7 years later. CULTURAL RESET.

I'm not sure with Zimzalabim but Tempo wasn't inspired nor similar in any way with IGAB lol. They're just songs that have different structure than the rest of the industry, that's all. Even before Tempo, EXO already have songs with unique structure composition(notably Kokobop & Growl).
@Empyrean.127
@Empyrean.127 4 жыл бұрын
Andreanata Noivan To me personally, I consider that I Got a Boy inspired Zimzalabim and Tempo mainly because of textural differences; they jump back and forth with introducing new material with almost no setup in between, making it seem as if they are jumping between different genres and even different songs, keeping the listeners on their toes. For Zimzalabim, the texture changes, the sudden introduction of new material, and the bringing back of old material remind me of I Got a Boy. I Got a Boy jumped back and forth between textural changes and even combined them at some points, most noticeably in the final chorus. Tempo’s textural differences are more connected than both Zimzalabim and I Got a Boy, but still disjunct enough that the listener notices a big difference (once you get the bridge and a capella at least). That’s pretty much how I think about how they are connected at least. Both songs strike me as more experimental within their discography, if not near the top of experimentalism for both of them that both songs are near the level of I Got a Boy’s experimentalism.

Then i figured out that I got a boy was actually like that... damn i was so confused, it was brilliant. But yeah, if IGAB was eventually a mix of two songs this is how one of them would sound like. Now that it's been generic-fied, this sounds like it could be a Weki Meki song. Weki Meki is a group that has both modern AND 2nd gen kpop elements in their songs. Not only that, but they always have more than one sound (genre) in a single song, and it consistently switches back and forth. For example: I Don't Like Your Girlfriend (that song is still a roller-coaster til this day), Crush, Picky Picky.

I think this version really highlights how I Got A Boy's mixing of genres and overall visual representation takes you on such a journey. From the harder downbeats to this double-time with its annoying yet addicting sharp synth in the background to the airy second verse to the rock inspired bridge and back. It's all song whiplash with each part not overstaying it's welcome. This version while good is like the same stanza over and over with minor additions, catchy but still feels like it's missing something. Ironically, it's still more experimental than newer Kpop songs though, which really says something about SNSD.

What's interesting for me is when IGAB came out, the structure didn't seem that wild to me--- it just felt like someone was trying to make kpop sound western by haphazardly mixing the elements together. So I didn't really like it because it felt like it was trying to be top 40, and I was already exhausted by our music. The greatest irony is a few years later BP released whistle and I absolutely loved it because it had western fundamentals but breathed into it a whole new kpop flare. I owe my kpop life to snsd tho, iconic times.

Lol But at least TWICE has cool songs with some cool elements, and change from time to time and doesnt sound generic. Unlike a lot of other girlgroups using the same generic girl crush americanized sound over and over like BlackPink. Sorry I can't even listen, sounds so so generic lmao. YG is even trying at this point? Shame bc is wasting girls' talents

the entire time I’m like 👁👄👁 CAUSE IT SOUNDS GOOD BUT IT JUST PROVES HOW GENERIC SOME POPULAR SONGS CAN BE? like it followed the formula for a successful song and that’s it- I got a boy is forever iconic, we need more songs like it
